I have an African child and two more coming. African skin doesn't have oil glands and so gets very dry. Also there is the issue of ringworm...so I came up with a recipe for "Kefir Smoothie" soap, using raw goat milk kefir- which is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and anti- a whole lot of other stuff! Honey for healing and soothing and anti-bacterial properties, and coconut oil for the lather and also if you use the good stuff, it's also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. I grind oatmeal and add that for soothing the skin, and then lard of course, and a bit of glycerine, tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract.
Then whatever essential oil or fragrance oil you prefer. It's a spin off a basic milk soap recipe.
For those of you who also make soap, what do you think about the kefir's unique qualities holding up in soap making? I put it in the freezer until partiall frozen before adding the lye.

Hi Dalyn, I make kefir everyday & have made soap for years. You are on the right track, but the properties in kefir will be distroyed when the soap soaponifies, because it gets so hot. I have made a soap specifically for black skin with shea butter, coconut, palm with a wonderful blend of essential oils to do what you want. I'd be happy to send you the recipe if you like? I wouldn't add extra glycerine because you'll end of with a very soft soap. The recipe I'm referring to is super-fatted. I can also send you my recipe for shea body butter, that even works good on black hair. It has the same essential oil blend in it. I sure love kefir & use it daily in our smoothies & other foods. Many blessings with your children!
