my daughter taught herself how to make fondant today. and she baked for me a very pretty cake.
check it out on my blog. Even I don't know how to make fondant. gee, I'm lucky if I can even frost the cake to look half way decent..but Naomi blew me away. If she can do this on her first attempt at baking a cake..what can she do when she gets more experience at this?
wow! I am so proud of my sweetheart of a daughter!

That is awesome! I was wondering how old she was too! What a great job she did! Looks like you may have a baker/cake decorator on your hands!

The daughter is 16, and that was her first attempt at fondant...:D
The daughter also found the recipe for the fondant here : http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm
The daughter also just happens to be very proud of herself right now...:D
Cheers,

~Naomi~

LOL..yeah my daughter is 16..she's a real sweetheart. And I told her that she can do cakes too if she'd like..along with her sewing.
I don't know if anyone here in town uses the fondant on the cakes..it would be something different around here. The fondant is different..it tasted sweet.
I had heard that fondant can taste like cardboard to some folks, but this kind was sweet and tasted pretty good.
I don't know if she'll want to become a cake gal too or not, but I encourage her in whatever she wants to accomplish.
I am proud of her too.
She is a pretty amazing gal if I do say so myseslf and always tends to surprise me with the things she comes up with.
(maybe I'm doing something right after all)

If she can do fondant properly on her first time that's a gift. Most bakers/pastry chef don't even make it anymore. They bring it in in huge 5 gallon tubs. If it taste good to boot well I'd say " She's a keeper!" She must have gotten all her talent from her mother!

yes, she did that all by herself..she had my husband take me out of the house for about 3 hrs yesterday so that she could make the cake. And she apparently had been planning it for a while, because she had found a web site that told how to make the fondant from scratch. So she and her dad got the supplies yesterday morning and she spent the afternoon creating that cake.
The fondant was actually quite edible, sort of like a marshmallow flavor of stuff. (I had never had fondant before) but I was quite impressed with the way it could just be molded and shaped.
I can see now why folks like Duff Goldman(Ace of Cakes guy) use the stuff..it's pretty cool.

Food network? yeesh...um...keep an eye on the Food channels scedule for the next 20 years or so ;)
naw...I'm just kidding...And really ladies..all these compliments and wows..you should see my head! I mean this morning I had to fix my hair in the bathroom with the huge 3' x 4' mirror ;)instead of my tiny 2'x2' mirror...Just ask mom..she'll say I'm getting a big head too...but no seriously...I know whats wrong with the cake...I see my mistakes on it...haha...the tear on tier two, the petals weren't yellow all the way through, there were a few ripples on the bottom edges of the tiers, should have worked those out...and shame on me...I made a huge mess and forgot to wear an apron, and got powdered sugar down my dark blue skirt...hehe...but it was soo fun to make that cake...I get to make little sisters cake this year for her b-day....YAY! I'm thinking a frog.(we have the cutest cake book, with frogs and castles and stuff all covered in fondant...gonna be soo fun!
Cheers,

~Naomi~
