As you all know, I have been in some struggle over the past year or so with ALOT of things. I do appreciate you bearing with me through all of this. I decided today was the day to clean out the house. Symbolic in the fact that I looked around and decided that most everything I own, with the exception of the few things DH and I have bought together since beginning our lives together, were just not me. My mom has sent me numerous heirlooms, chotchsky's, just things..that are SO not my style or even taste. I do appreciate the thought, but these things are very draining to me as far as the upkeep and responsibility. I packed up the heirlooms and they are on their way back to mom. I already feel better! I am a collector of memories, not things.
I rid myself of anything that did not fit into my idea of what MY life and home should be like. DH doesn't really care as long as he has a bed, house shoes and a tv and a few of his reference books, what I do. I realized I have lived someone else's idea of what I should be for too long.
I threw all of my clothing, shoes, accessories on the bed, thus forcing myself to go through all the stuff. I took out about 2 bags of things that I are just not me. Feels so good!! Out went some cooking ware I NEVER use, 2 boxes of books (taking these to the bookstore for $$$), 1 bathroom vanity thing that I have always hated, 1 old shelf, again given to me to it would not end up in the dumpster, that I have never gotten around to fixing and several boxes and bags of just things.
95% of this is being donated, which makes me feel good knowing someone else will be able to use these things. The rest, like larger pieces of furniture, are being listed on craiglists or brought somewhere. I figure I can make enough money to buy the hammock DH and I want for the back yard.
And throughout this whole thing, I have been calm and collected and I am not sad at all, but rather filled with energy and happiness. Thank you all for your support. You don't know how much this means to me.
Cheers,
Heather |

Good for you. I did the same thing a few months ago. I got rid of 19 bags of stuff. The sad part is there's still a few closets I need to go through. I found the house is a whole lot easier to clean, I hope you will too.

Heather-
I am so happy for you! I know it was hard to get to this point, but it is so worth it for you! It sounds like you are in such a strong place right now, from deciding to go back to school, to your "aha" moment about your mom, and now this! It sounds like you are finally able to mold your life to fit you, instead of molding yourself to try and fit other people's expectations. I think you are doing awesome! Congrats!

Heather... Did you really?? Wow.. I know that had to be really so hard to do.. i know beacause i am such a huge pack rat.. 7 have the hardest time parting with ANYTHING!!!.. i mean i don't have to have possesions .. like things of value.. or monitary things.. not like status type things.. but just junk.. I feel as if i need to be surrounded by so much junk all the time!! I don't know how you did it.. I really commend you for it.. & the strength that i personally know that it had to take for you to do that.. You really have grown.. & become so strong with in yourself.. to be able to have done that.. Sometime for me.. i think in having old things.. even if they really aren't MY families old things.. i feel as if i have been able to hold on to them.. a bit longer.. someones granny or some ones uncle.. i don't know.. i know it sounds weird.. but once i get it.. i can't let it go.. My poor husband says that i am not allowed to die before him.. he says he just wouldn't know where to begin!!
You are one Brave soul!!! & i am really so proud of you!!!
Shannon.. 19 bags?? Are you living somewhere in my house & we just haven't bumped into each other yet?

Kathie, I used to be a packrat too but being in the military and moving 10 times in 6 years has helped alot. I did keep some items, like my artwork from my childhood and I framed it into 2 large frames that are hanging in my son's room now. I also am learning to scrapbook, which keeps those odds and ends memories in place.
I like simple and that is just me. Clutter does not allow me to think. I get overwhelmed and I swear I am sensitive to the vibes of things, so things have to be positive around me. As I said, I collect memories and that is enough for me. Though I can appreciate collections.....
You will get there, when you are ready!!! Just keep plugging away.
Cheers,
Heather |

No.. I think i need the junk.. I feel as if i have lost too much along the way.. & i need to grasp onto things that are hard... & tangible.. something solid..
maybe it's part of me getting old too.. afraid of letting go of things now.. loosing things maybe for me is a feeling of REALLY loosing things..! & i just don't want to.. or can't!
or.. just said.. no.. i don't have to.. & i refuse..
I don't know..maybe that is the stubborn old lady in me coming out now!!!

Good for you, i love getting in there and cleaning out the things that you don't like/need/want. If feels like a big weight has been lifted/ i am trying to do the same thing because we are in the middle of moving but it is hard. I have to be in the right mood and i just don't wanna right now. Good luck with the cleaning out and purging of "things" :)
