Please help!

Nora adores her snugli pack, but I am worried about keeping her in it too much and hurting her spine. I made a sling, but every time I try and use it, Nora screams! If I put her in it, she won't nurse while in it, and I have to support her just like I was holding her without the sling anyway. Please tell me there is some trick to get her used to the sling?

Alee I only used a sling with Riley I used an Ergo with the others(it is made specically so the spine yours and the babies stay in alignment) anyway I had to put it on the bed lay him in it and then put it on. Then bounce and sway to get him relaxed. Riley didn't like it much either so I am not sure if this helps. He did sleep well in it I must admit. Other mother's love them and I see them with thier babies all sweet and snuggly. I am jealous, but I could only use one for about 3 months. Riley was huge! Can Nora see out of it?

Some babies don't snuggle. I was one. I still do have a large interpretation of "personal space". My daugher has always been a snuggler and loved "sling time". Maybe if Nora doesn't take to it, that's just her way? I'm sure the two of you will find a compromise that makes you both comfortable and happy. I hope this doesn't sound harsh, and I don't think of myself as "spikey" around others. I'm just more at ease when there's room/space. Maybe that's what Nora's telling you?

We make a difference.

I used the Maya Wrap - felt I could tighten it up easier. My youngest liked the kangaroo position the best -- facing forward, feet tucked up. I also loved it because you can use it longer than regular ones. However, if she loves the snugli you can use it for now and try again in a few weeks for the sling.

Best wishes,

Holly

By snugli pack are you talking about one that is more structured? Maybe you could try one that is less structured, more conforming. My babies HATED being covered with anything while nursing. But, if I draped the sling over them and me, they could handle that until they were more active. My active children are more happy nursing in a dark room with white noise. That way they don't get distracted.

Rebecca-
The Snugli is like the Baby Bjorn carrier. It has shoulder straps and a waist strap. The baby is sitting up and can either face in or out. I have one that is very soft and not very structured, and then one that has a lot of structure to it. Both of them make her sit up though.
Here is a link to some Snuglis

What kind of sling do you have? Is it a Ring sling or one of the ones that is all cloth? I make them is why I ask and have a link to some differrent positions to use them in. Have you tried puting her in a different position. I am sorry but I forget how old she is. I will try to add the link anyway. I hope it helps.

With my daughter I had to try a couple different ones until I found the right one for us. It was a Sling Ezee. I loved it as much as my daughter did. The great thing about it is that it comes in different sizes. It also has padding around the top and bottom which made is more comfortable for both of us. I actually took a class on how to use the sling. It was the best thing I did when she was a baby. There is nothing like an expert to help you and your baby figure out what the best way is for YOU. They also showed us how to tighten it to contour the child and how to move the extra fabric for support. If you have an breastfeeding stores in your area ask them if they have sling classes. That is where I took mine. After the class I was an expert myself in no time. I could vacuum, wash dishes, do laundry, eat at the table, everything and anything while I wore the sling.

Just a word about soft form carriers vs. structured carriers.

Structured carriers tend to be WORSE for baby's back because they dont let the baby sit, instead the baby dangles, which causes their legs to pull on their spine causing misallignment. Soft form carriers like the sling when they are smaller, or a SPOC wrap are great because they allow baby's body to curve naturally. For larger babies (though I used this with both of mine fromt he get go along with a sling that I made) a mei tai carrier or something equivallent is great because their body hugs your body and they are actually sitting as opposed to dangling.

If anyone is interested in learning a bit more, www.thebabywearer.com has a lot of great info about baby wearing. I wore Grace while I was pregnant with Zoe whenever she felt like she neded a ride. Zoe loves being worn and I have worn both of them at the same time too! People look at me like I am nuts, but I believe in the NINO concept plus some.

I make mei tai carriers, very nice ones too, great stitching and quality fabrics, if anyone is interested. I don't really promote them, though it has been soemthing on my brain because when I started out selling things to people, it was my carriers. I had some in a shop in Brainerd for a time, they sold out and I didn't want to re-commit to that store because they didn't really understand the babywearing concept. babywearing is very near and dear to me and I really honestly hate seeing babies being dragged about in those terrible baby car seats with handles, or sitting disconnected in a stroller. I am kind of a stickler when it comes to AP though too.

Anyhow, enough of my sort of rant/rave on soft form carriers.

I used the Over-the-shoulder-baby-holder:
http://www.parentsafely.com/over-the-shoulder-baby-holder/index.html with my babies. It came with an instructional video and that helped me. All my kids did great with it...

btw...could your little Nora have reflux that burns when she lays in a sling???

Good luck...I hope you can work it out, because I really enjoyed 'slinging' my babes.

miles of smiles~

I don't think Nora has reflux since she doesn't mind being held, I think she just doesn't feel secure enough in the pouch style sling. That is the only one we have had a chance to try. Perhaps a wrap style would be better.
