We have great news, we finally, finally bought a house. We sold our very large family home in the suburbs last Sept since all our 4 children were grown and starting to buy houses of their own. We put nearly everything we owned in storage and moved "temporarily" into an apartment while we decided what to do now that we were "emptynesters". Our four children are very close in age so when they left, we were suddenly alone. We agonized about it, do we buy acreage or a small farm? Do we buy a garden home? Do we build a house? We couldn't decide, one week we were looking at farms and another week we were in another part of town looking at brand new garden homes. That's why we have been in the apartment all winter/spring - indecision plus we had our daughter's wedding to plan. All our children but one lives in town and he will probably move back plus we don't have a lot of out of town relatives so probably we don't need a large home. Sooo, we bought a very small historic house in an historical area, (some of my neighbors have chickens since it is still zoned agricultural)near my husband's office on an acre+ lot. It also has a cute "carriage guest house" on the property and a workshop for my husband for his woodworking. It has at least four 100+ yr old trees that are enormous near the house and a nice blueberry patch. There is also a tiny greenhouse attached to the carriage house. The entire thing needs A LOT of work especially the carriage house. My husband likes remodeling and there will be enough projects there to last him forever. We plan to add a master bathroom and a new laundry room soon. Even though it's an historic district they allow you to expand the houses as long as you keep the outside in the period look. There is no homeowner association or restrictions so I can have a clothes line. Now we are thinking how to get rid of a ton of "stuff" we have in storage that we can't use anymore. The lucky thing is that our children are furnishing their homes so a lot of the stuff they can use but they are quick to tell me "it's not their style". Some of it, I look at and say, "what was I thinking when I bought those Chinese lamps, that uncomfortable sectional that my husband always hated, that large wingback chair with an enormous peacock on the fabric, and those large coral colored urns, etc." But most of it I've had forever so I think I got my money's worth. I do have some nice antiques from my grandmother's that will look great there and are the right scale for the house. Then, the kitchen, I've got to pare down the kitchen stuff and get rid of stuff I never use. I can't wait to get out in the yard and see what's there, plan my herb and rose gardens and have somewhere for my 2 golden retrievers to play. There are alot of old bricks out back and I have been thinking what a nice courtyard floor or herb garden paths they would make. It's fun to dream again and my spirits have definitely brightened up. I've got to think of a name for my cottage, perhaps Blueberry Hill. Mollie |

Oh, Mollie, it sounds absolutely wonderful! Congratulations. What part of the world are you in -- I think I need to be your neighbor!
When do you move? I'm sure you're ready to be out of your apartment. I was never a good apartment dweller and worried about having to go back to one recently. Thankfully, that didn't happen.
Let us hear more!

Congrats Mollie! Your new property sounds like just the challenge you were looking for and suits your needs to a T! I love the sense of old houses, how you walk in and you can feel the past lives but also invision what the future will hold for you. Our last house was 214 yrs old and it was a treasure. Our present house is about 60 years old and it is too new for me! Best wishes with the new adventure and keep us posted on the renovations and decorating!
with a happy heart |
