Last night, at our Farmgirls Meeting, we all read a story that one of our gals cut out of a magazine. It was about this woman in a small town who requested folks send her any bulbs they could spare so she could "dress up her town". This story coincided with the fact that a local business here was going to donate their time and money to landscape our community hall this summer(badly needed). We all decided to dig up stuff from our own yards to help with that.

Well, we all thought the bulb donations from around the country (world?) was a great idea and want to try it to dress things up for our tourists. Our town is a very small(450 people or so) mountain town with a very rich history and really has no flowers except in 2 very small memorial parks. One of the parks, Veteran's Memorial Park, only has 4 half barrels with flowers. The rest of the park is just bunch grass, bushes and a few trees.

Our Visitor's Center has some planters on the porch but there are vast areas of ground that could be planted with bulbs.

Our one large park (about 1/2 acre) only has one raised bed of flowers.

So, I suggested notifying all of you gals on the forum and asking if any of you would like to send a bulb or two that you might be dividing up this year? We thought it would be a lot of fun if you sent a little story about where your bulbs came from or if you had an interesting story about them. For each bulb (or set of bulbs) that you gals send, we will make a small placard to place with them that says who sent them and a synopsis of your story.

Then, Rose will take pictures with her digital camera next spring/summer when they are all blooming and post them. So what do you think?

That would be wonderful Marybeth. Here is a list of what does well here:
Daffodils/Narcissus, Tulips, Iris, Hyacinth, Lilies, Allium, Windflowers, Crocus

What does not survive winter here: Cannas, Ranunculus, Freesia, Glads, Calla Lilies

Lisa, I have some iris I'd be happy to share. Just saw in town where an iris club was selling their extras and thought to myself that now must be a good time to dig, divide, and share.

How is your bulb project going? I love this idea...I somehow missed it earlier.

How is the bulb collecting doing? I have some tulips that I need to dig up, move and divide. If I have any extra left over, I will email you for your address :)

Love this! Our town has been "beautifying for a few years with daffodils. I happen to have some iris that I need to thin and will be happy to send some for your town.

Michelle, Alee and Sharon: Our bulb collecting has been very slow. So far, we have iris and a half milk crate of tulips that we got locally. We would just LOVE to have some from other cities/states that we can put a nice little placard with.

By all means, send what you can spare. I will pay shipping. Just let me know how much it is and I'll send you a check.

Sorry to hear that bulbs have been slow to come your way. Maybe more will find you as fall approaches? I just sent you an e-mail to get the address you want these sent to. I'll label them with as much info. as I have on them.

We make a difference.

Thank you so much, Michelle. I got your email and responded. However, someone else sent me an email, too. It went directly into my junk folder and when I tried to mark it as safe, it disappeared! All I caught in the name was "from MaryJanesFarm. Would whoever sent that email please try again? I'm assuming it was in regard to this thread. I could be wrong...I will post this message in Across the Fence also.

Ok, girls. We set a planting date for October 6. So, hopefully, this date will give you all plenty of time to get your bulbs divided. We really can't wait much longer after that. There's a chance we'll have snow on the ground before October ends.

So far we have some tulips, tons of iris, hens & chicks, cosmos seeds, columbine plants and seeds, feverfew, blanket flower seeds and brown-eyed susan seeds. So we are off to a good start. Still don't have any daffodils or crocus, but we're hoping some will come in before we plant everything. We've actually been getting monetary donations (without solicitation!) from locals to put toward plants. We might just buy some daffodils with that.

We've been getting such positive feedback from folks about what we are doing and planning around town. They love the ideas we have and they love everything we've done so far. It makes us feel really good about being and working together. Thanks to MaryJane for being our catalyst!
