Check out my blogspot blog in my signature line below. It is pretty long, so I did it over 2 days. So scroll down to #1, then up to 2 and 3.

I hope it is understandable. If you have any questions, please email me! I guess it could be printed out, one day at a time and then put in correct order!

Have fun, and if you make one of these aprons, I'd love to see it! Email me a photo of it!!

The apron cost me: $2.85. I know I could do it for less. I usually buy my shirts for fifty cents and make my own bias tape.
In the spirit of farmgirl frugality,

Thanks for the sewing lesson Georgann! I use old clothes for wool projects and crazy quilts, so I am hooked on your repurposed apron. I will be making that full apron very soon. You are a very talented lady. Thanks for sharing with us.

Your apron is so cute. I make the bib ones too. I had just washed mine I wear often. I washed it with darks because it was most navy blue with a little white.
It darken the white eyelet lace trim I put on it and the appliquied hearts on the pockets. Oh well, I will never do that again.
I should have known I am in my 50's for crying out loud Ha.
Anyway loved it/ My deceased Grandmothers who both wore aprons and house dresses every day would have loved it too.
My Mom's Mom would have loved the cheery color and checks. Pinkroses

Great tutorial ........ and the photos really help with the visual part of your instructions.
Way to many crafting ideas & not enough time..... I can't retire soon enough, I want to go & play all day in my craft room.

Don't ya just love aprons? They cross generations and are our touchstones to the past and our legacy to the future. I read something on Ebay that made me rather sad. A woman was selling some vintage aprons and in her description of her aprons, rather than talking about the positive, she was talking about how women used to be enslaved and the apron was a symbol of her bondage. I really felt she missed the point of aprons past, present and future. Aprons are not a symbol of servitude, but rather a symbol of strength and connection.

I'm so glad ya'll are enjoying the apron tutorial. Take it and run with it and create a family connection!!

Oh, another thought about using shirts: If you find a long sleeve shirt, use one sleeve for the front bib, the other sleeve for the back ties and the back yoke for the waistband...you can possibly cut it wide and just fold it over rather than cut it in two pieces, and use the button placket and button hole placket for the neck bands. That would make it a button neck back adjustable neck "tie".

Hugs and blessings,
Georgann

You are right about the ebay lady missing the point. I look at it as a simpler time & a Right of Passage,,,,when a little girl got to step up to the kitchen counter and help mommy make biscuits or jam or what ever....just as little boys hung out in the garage with their dads cutting & nailing or noseing around a car motor.
Although I have to laugh, I think it was Erma Bombek who coined the phrase, "apron stings, the ties that bind & gag". I miss her & her silly sence of humor.

Oh, Aunt George, I really think you did a great job on the tutorial. I love the way you creatively cut the fabric from the shirt. The apron is so feminie. You would never know it came from a man's shirt!

Aunt George, would you mind if I wrote a feature article on your tutorial for a new site called the apronista? I love, love your tutorial. And I agree with Clare, I think I like it so much because you would never know it was a man's shirt. *wink*

Eren,
I would be thrilled if you did an article on the repurposed apron tutorial. If anything needs to be cleared up in the instructions, just let me know.

Been busy sewing today. Finished Kim's wedding cape today.....it is so, so fairylike!!

Now on to some aprons! LOL......

Georgeann:

my husband and son were cleaning the bog attic yesterday and I found a bunch of curtains I was not going to use again. Usually, I toss them or donate them to a thrift shop. Not this time! I will be using them for aprons now. They are washed and folded, ready for wear. Maybe next weekend will be the start for one of them!

Great ideas on reusing fabric for aprons. I always did it for quilts and even clothes again and again, but never thought about the aprons.

I have been trying to get to the GW to find a mans shirt, but havent got there yet.
Thats so clever how to make an apron from a shirt, Aunt George!
Does it matter wether they are long or short sleeve shirts, or is there plenty of fabric with short sleeves? Isuspose ya get prettier prints with short sleeve ones.
