Posted - Jan 07 2012 : 7:42:59 PM I make all my own cleaning products but the one thing I still purchase is a heavy duty toilet bowl cleaner. I would really like to get away from using chemicals all together but we have very hard water. Even if I scrub it down daily, I still get build up. Can anyone recommend an alternative.

Posted - Jan 21 2012 : 3:16:28 PM I'm just using a good old fashioned toilet brush with the plastic bristles, Lori. I think the key is to let the Borax sit for awhile. I usually leave it for a hour or two, then scrub.

Posted - Jan 19 2012 : 5:49:42 PM I just pour some in; I'm bad about not measuring stuff like that. I pour it til it looks about right for the job.

Posted - Jan 19 2012 : 4:28:32 PM I have soft water, but still get pretty bad rust stains. I also use Borax. I just let it soak for awhile, then scrub. Sometimes I will put vinegar in the rinse water just to give it a good final rinse. |

Posted - Jan 10 2012 : 06:56:55 AM how do you use the vinegar and baking soda? Just pour some in or do you measure it out or what?

Posted - Jan 10 2012 : 06:56:04 AM honestly, thing only thing I have found to get the hard water stains off is using a pumice stone. I do it as often as I see the ring start to return. It does get it off and it gets quicker as long as I keep up with it. Not a quick fix I know but it is what works. I had been using "The Works" brand though it really doesn't get the stains off either. I am using up what I have left of it but I would prefer something not laden with chemicals as I have been burnt by a splatter of this so I definitely want to find something safer.

Posted - Jan 09 2012 : 5:11:41 PM We've got super hard water also. I have given up on scrubbing every day. Currently I am using baking soda and vinegar to do all of the drains and I put it in the toilet as well--works pretty good but doesn't get everything out. I've done some reading on using citric acid to clean hard water stains, I have yet to get off it and get some to try though.

Posted - Jan 08 2012 : 2:20:07 PM I use 7th Generation or Ecover for my toilets. We have our own well & septic, so I'm very careful about using homemade or environmentally friendly cleaning products only.
My what has a lot of iron in it and both products do a good job. Sometimes I have to add a little Bar Keepers friend in the bowl before scrubbing. Good luck finding a product that works for you.
