Does anyone have experience in using butter crocks rather than storing butter in the fridge? I love the idea of keeping my butter spreadable but am concerned about safety. Has anybody here died yet from using crocks through summer heat? :)

Yes, I use a butter crock and it is wonderful! There is no need to worry about the butter being fresh. It's best to change the water in the base every three days, though. Once you try a butter crock you will be sold. The butter spreads like a dream!

God bless,
Mychelle

I use a butter bell year round and love it! As already mentioned, you change the water every few days and when the butter runs out I wash the entire unit before putting in a new cube.
It's great!

I bought a cheapy one at rural king and it has been my counter top buddy for more than a year now. I love it and I have only had a few problems with the butter fallin out. It was mostly due to not gettin it dried well enough before fillin. The bell must be completely dry and at room temp before fillin. Hubby filled it once after just pullin it from the rinse water and hand dryin it. The butter melted some where it touched the bell and we had to put the bell, butter side up of course, into the fridge to chill before puttin it in the bowl.

I say go for it! It's no more complicated than havin to remember to put away the butter in the fridge!

I have a butter bell, too. Never had any problem other than I sometimes forget to put butter in it!!!! I do change the water every other day, for freshness. Mine was purchased from an artisan potter at an art fair, but my mil has the Le Creuset bell and she loves it.

Jeanna, that sounds like an idea I would adopt, too. And probably change the water more frequently, like every day. Otherwise, sounds like butter crocks get the Farmgirl Seal of Approval :) Now, to find just the right one.....

I have a butter bell and love it. I have found in the summer I have to put an ice cube in the water to keep it cool enough. Of course that is with 90-100 degree weather that is just around the corner here.

I have a butter crock and just love it! You just change out the water every 3 days and make sure that you don't leave food particles in the butter. After each complete use of a stck of butter, I make sure to wash the two parts in hot soapy water and dry before I refill. It does make a big difference to have butter ready to spread anytime you need it. Try it out and see how cool it works!

I have one too. It does stay nice, but the butter tends to plop out into the water after you use some of it.

I was thinking about the butter crocks. It looks like such a great idea. Maybe I will give it a shot

Hi Mara - I don't have one, but a very close friend does, and she swears by it. It's out on her counter year round and she's never had a problem yet. I say go for it! :) - Nini
