OK... so back in mid October I found this interesting Poll from Alee http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45862 and it lead to this...

I was reading MJ's latest Cluck and found that November 17th is Homemade Bread Day. It's an actual day and not just for Farmgirls :) I suggested that everyone commit to baking some homemade bread on the 17th and post as to how it turned out. Herbaldy55 (aka Judy) thought I should post a new thread & see if I get any nibbles.

So, here goes...This is not a challenge or a swap, but if you'd like to join me on Homemade Bread Day, please do! Judy said she'd join in. If you can, include a pic of your yummy goodness. Maybe you can try a new recipe or just rely on that tried & true one.

I have never made good 'ol homemade bread and thought this would be a great day to start! Plus... I think it will be neat to think of all the other farmgirls that'll be baking with me...in spirit anyway:)

So, I'll be back here on the 17th to let y'all know what a success (or disaster) it was ;)

Thanks to Judy for suggesting I post this!

I used the recipe for English Muffins out of the Joy of Cooking. I was very surprised, when I opened the box of muffin rings that I have started carrying on my website, that the recipe included was identical to the Joy of Cooking's. :-) I'll have it posted to the blog by Monday morning. It'll take me a little time because it is long.

Everyone's bread looks wonderful! To bad our computers don't have the options for taste and smells! LOL. I was an avid baker all the time many years ago. When my husband left I lost total interest in the things that brought me great pleasure. I have all the tools, equipment and cookbooks to probably open my own store. Thank you so much to all of you Farmgirls that have deeply inspired me to get back to the basics of what I love to do!

Beverly your bread turned out beautiful especially for the first time. Now on to making it as often as possible.

Mary Beth, I hope to make English Muffins someday, I have never tried to do that.

Diane your bread looks so yummy and thanks for the link for Artisan Bread in Five Minutes.

Sooooo what's next!

I used the recipe that I got from my OLD Betty Crocker cookbook from the late 60's. I knew this recipe worked and I used to triple the recipe to make multiple loaves when the kids were home. It is not in the present Betty Crocker cookbook I have, so what I give you is for 1 loaf. It can be doubled by doubling all the ingredients EXCEPT the YEAST. Leave it the same as for 1 loaf. There are also variations including WW bread, cheese, Oatmeal , herb, garlic etc. The following is for 1 loaf. It is called:

QUICK BUTTERMILK BREAD

2 pk active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (105-115)
1-1/4 cups buttermilk
4-1/2 to 5 cups all purpose flour (this was before bread flour)
1/4 cup shortening
2 Tabl sugar
2 teas baking pwd.
2 teas salt
soft butter or margarine

Grease loaf pan (9x5x3"). In large mixer bowl dissolve yeast in warm water. Add buttermilk, 2-1/2 cups flour, shortening, sugar, baking pwd, & salt. Blend 1/2 minute on low speed scraping constantly. Then beat 2 min on med speed. Add remaining flour (either with dough hook or by hand). Dough will be slightly sticky.

Turn dough onto well floured board, & knead 5 min. Roll dough into rectangle, roll up, press ends to seal and place seam side down in greased pan. Brush loaf lightly with softened butter. Let rise in warm place until doubled (about 1 hr).
Heat oven to 425. Rack should be in lowest postion or bread will brown too quickly. bake 30-35 min. Remove from pan, brush loaf with butter and cool.

WW Bread: Substitute 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour & 1 cup ww flour for fist addition of flour. Substitute 2 cups ww flour for second addition of flour.

I make bread every couple of days. I did the old fashioned way for a long time. You know the mixing, kneading, rising, punching down, rising and then baking. I found a really good recipe for basic white bread on www.allrecipes.com it is called Amish White Bread. I mastered that, but then my DH gave me these two books for Christmas and my bread making became a whole different story. Once you master (which is easy), the basic boulle recipe, you can add ingredients and make all sorts of breads. I also use the same container to store the dough over and over again and it becomes a sort of sourdough. This is the easiest and almost foolproof bread I have ever made. Basically, you mix the dough and let it sit until it collapses on itself, then you store it in the fridge for up to two weeks. When you are ready to bake it, you pre-heat your oven with a baking stone in it and while it is heating you pull off a chunk of dough about the size of a grapefruit and pull it over itself to form a gluten coat. You then let it rest on a pizza peel that is dusted with cornmeal. After resting for 20-40 minutes you slash the top and slip it off the pizza peel onto the hot stone. Then pour about a cup of water into the broiler pan or have a pan of water on bottom oven rack. Bake for 30 minutes and cool. Mine does not usually get a chance to cool completely before my DH is cutting off a slab. I don't think I can put the recipe on here, but I remember a magazine that had the main recipe and instructions in it. I will try to find the link.

Here is a link to quite a few videos on youtube about Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. I have that book and the follow up book Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day. My DH bought them for me for Christmans last year and I love them!

Beverly, I just store it in a plastic bread bag (like a leftover from storebought) for a couple of days if it lasts that long. If it lasts longer than two or three days, I then put it in the frig (which makes it seem dry when you first take it out) and slice it and nuke it for just a couple of seconds to make it soft again. If you leave it out much longer, it will mold because here aren't any preservatives. And bacon, eggs and fresh bread sounds like a yummy way to start the day.

Lillian, your cinnamon raisin bread recipe sounds great. Would love to have it! :-)

Lillian, I would love to have the recipe that has you swirl the cinnamon & raisins...if you don't mind sharing :) My DH was just telling me yesterday how he'd love to have some cinnamon bread (he doesn't really care for raisins).

Thanks so much!

Beverly, thank YOU for getting this going; without you I never would have known about Homemade Bread Day. I try to bake bread now at least once a week unless we're out of town. A hearty thanks to all you amazing women who participated, I've got some great new recipes to try. Everyone's photos are wonderful; my mouth waters just looking at all the beautiful bread that was produced.

Yes-3 loaves. I have plenty of bread pans so that is not uncommon. The new recipes were good, but I think I like my other cinnamon raisin bread better. The older recipe has me swirl the cinnamon and raisins in and this one just had me add them to the recipe, but it has a good flavor. After seeing the english muffins I think I will be making some of those next week.

Mary Beth,
Sounds like you got your day off to a wonderful start :) Sure wish I had a muffin sandwich ;) guess I'll go toast me some HOMEMADE bread and have some eggs & bacon w/ it :)

I meant to ask you, what's the best way to store my bread?....AND....how many muffins did you get from your recipe?

OK! It's in the AM next day and we just finished a tasty 'egg muffin' made with homemade English Muffins!! Yummmmmmy!! I used to work for that place we all know and love with the two giant arches and many a morning did I make those little gems. I know how they USED to make them. Today's just aren't as good because they toast the muffins. Can we say, "Dry-sville?" Anyway, it's a happy morning because we had breakfast our way! :-)

Dianne, somehow I forgot to say THANK YOU! I can see how you would need to bake 2 at a time. How often do you bake? I'm thinking I'll have to bake 2 too :) Once I get the hang of it, I'm sure it'll be easier. That is awesome that you have a 2+ year old starter, I hope my mother matures & starts producing. I would love to be able to hand it down through our family...that would be too cool! :)

Well it's 9:00 and my bread is finally done. Oh, how I've missed the smell of homemade fresh bread baking in the oven. Thank you Beverly for giving me the inspiration to accomplish this task that I so needed. It definitely was a soulful moment and something that I have missed doing. I will certainly add this to my weekly to do's!

Mary Beth thanks for the recipe from your website. The bread is light and absolutely delicious!

Being technology challanged somehow my pictures were uploaded to my computer, however clueless where they are now. I will post them tomorrow unless I have some luck before hitting the hay.

Happy Bread Baking!

Angie, biscuits count for bread ANY day :)

Lillian, 3?!?!?!? WOW! How did the different recipes work?

Mary Beth, so glad to hear the muffins turned out! Will be watching for 'em on the blog :)

OK, I've got my pics...
2 loaves from "mother" going in the oven to rise overnight

After rising overnight, not much rise

This is out of the oven...don't look too bad, just no rise :(

This is Mary Beth's recipe, remember, I opted not to use a loaf pan

Finally, this is a look at the inside...Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!!!
