Is anybody else out there tired of all the waxy stuff they put in, supposedly Real Butter? You can't even get "butter" to spread on bread even when it's room temperature. Most of the farmers probably have your own cow and great butter, but what's the rest of us to do?

Would heavy cream or country style cream be better than whipping cream for making butter? Or is there something special about whipping cream?

Thanks Betty....hadn't thought of that. I use organic half & half. I'll get organic whipping cream too!

Have you looked at the ingredients on the whipped cream carton? That's the only reason I use half and half in my coffee. The ingredients are enough to make you wonder about the whipped cream.

I have a smootie maker that's just perfect for making butter. It has the spout at the bottom to drain off the liquid. Be sure to wash the butter til the water is clear. You do not want to keep any of the milk in the butter. It will spoil faster. Although we don't keep long enuf to spoil around here. I am lucky to have a friend with 2 Jersey cows. I'll get a gallon of milk and half of it is cream. I have milk goats but no seperator. I'd love to have one so I can make butter with the goat milk. It's very white. Not yellow like cow butter.

Cool!

Thanks

And especially this time of year, the leftover liquid would be great in buttermilk biscuits w/ Christmas dinner

Hi Claudia - yes you use it as it is buttermilk. I use it in biscuits and salad dressing even pancakes. You are pretty close by me, we should get together some time.

I used to make butter, and the leftover whey/ buttermilk is GREAT for making cornbread instead of whatever other liquid is called for in the recipe. I probably used it to make muffins and pancakes too in the same way.

Hey Sheri,

This is Claudia, from Deer Park! Do you take the left over liquid to use as buttermilk or something for cooking? I used to make butter years ago....before I had a processor. If you do use the leftover liquid, what do you do with it?

I use a food processor and it turns out yummy. Just google making butter for directions on rinsing it. Very easy.

When my boys were growing up, I home
schooled them and we did a Little House on the Prairie unit. One of the things we did was make butter. I had them shake whipping cream in a quart jar. You should have seen their eyes when the butter began to form!! I will never forget those days and all of the wonderful discoveries we made. I'm sure they won't either. Butter-making is easy!! just do it!!

So would this be like the heavy whipping cream we can buy anywhere?

Would love to try it in the food processor!
Sheep Mom 2 Posted - Dec 14 2009 : 7:46:02 PM
Easier - put the cream in your food processor and let it run until you have butter. Be sure to rinse the butter well under cold water or it will turn sour - and you may want to add some salt or herbs.
