This is a very easy recipe for apple butter.

3 quarts peeled apples sliced thin
1/2 cup water
Place in crock pot on high all day then add:
2 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 tsp ground clove
2 tsp ground cinnamon
Cook on low for about 4 hours
Stir, place in hot jars and seal.
Note: If apples are still too chunky, use mixer to break it down into a nice texture. Make sure it's still bubbling when you put it in your jars, can and seal.

I made this on Tuesday and canned it Tuesday night. Absolutely fantastic.

Susan, I can completely identify with you. I do the same thing. Too many irons in the fire. This recipe is a godsend thoug. Because now I can have the apple butter cooking while I'm at work, then come home for the finaly 4 hours cooking on low and can it without having to stand right next to it the whole time.

Thanks so much for posting this recipe Sue (Grammy Goose).

Thanks! With the sudden onset of cold weather we got our big apple tree picked a couple of days ago. This will be a great way to use some. I've never made apple butter before, and don't enjoy the idea of hours of cook and stir I thought it would take.
I tend to try to do too many things at once for that kind of activity.

Actually I did try some grape juice since I was canning that too and it was good.

I have been doing applesauce and applebutter. Thanks because the batches have been turning out great. I did an experiment today with applesauce in a small crockpot. I left it kind of chunky. I grated 2 clementines and pulled them apart into segments. I added dried cranberries and raisins. I also added sugar and spices, like cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and ginger. Basic pumpkin pie type stuff. I then let it simmer down for a few hours....WOW. Its yummy. Sort of a relish, sort of a chunky jam. Really good. I didnt have any walnuts, but I am going to add them to the next batch.

Has anyone tried grape juice as the sweetener like the Amish do?

Try using apple cider instead of the water for the crockpot apple butter. It adds even more flavor. Also, depending on how tart the apples, the sugar can be cut down a lot. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Update on the apple butter!!!!---Sue! I really want to thank you for this simple and simply delicious recipe. My "batch" has really brought a smile to a lot of faces! I can hardly wait to make another one! The other night we had fresh home baked bread, with home churned butter, and the home made apple butter. It was like dessert! I have ladled it out in small jars and spread the wealth around. The neighbor (a VERY nice young man going through a nasty divorce) was so excited to have it, he ate his with a spoon! Thank you!

This apple butter is so yummy! Blooping out of my crockpot aside...it turned out well. My apple peel syrup was not so successful. Albeit, I wasn't so concerned with that experiment, as I did not use organic apples and was a bit worried about all that "concentrated" peel.

I wonder if the batch was too large for her crockpot?

Do you keep the lid off the crock pot for the whole process?

Ok...so I sliced/peeled and put apples into the crockpot and they "blooped" out of the pot onto the counter....but I've kept going and added my sugar/spices and we are now in the home stretch of cooking on low for a few hours. Already it's dark brown and spicey smelling. I don't think I'll have enough to "can" after the apples tried to make their get-away but enough to share with a neighbor and make a dandy back-to-school gift for the secretary in my office...(she's not mine mind you but she sure takes care of me like she is and I appreciate her in oh so many ways!!!) I may even bake some bread today too!

So....I took the peels and covered with water and cooked them down on the stove. Now I am simmering peels, sugar, spice to make a jelly of some sort. I've strained through cheesecloth twice now and it's still dark but relatively clear... This will make jelly right?

I made this using apples with peels and just using my regular apple slicer that I use for slicing apples for my son. It turned out really yummy. I also cooked it for several hours before hitting the batch with my immersion blender. You cant tell the apple peels are there. Next time I might try popping the core in as well.

Yummy recipe. Thanks!

I Make Apple Butter every year, some with sugar and some with Splenda.
My neighbor is diabetic, so I make his with the Splenda and he loves it.

As far as the waterbath time, usually in any cookbook on canning they have the time table for apples listed. . not sure off the top of my head but 15 minutes comes to mind. . . please double check in your cookbook though.

The apple pie filling recipe sounds wonderful! Has anyone got a good one for canning???? I too would love to make a few jars for the winter.
Our wild apples are almost ready to pick any day now. . . I know, it seems early, however, our trees are already turning!

Do you have to put it into a water bath for a number of minutes after you can it?
