I am looking for a recipe from my childhood that my mother and aunts made (they are German ancestory). They called it butter ball soup, but it is also a Matzo Ball soup...it had a chicken broth base I think and the balls were made of some kind of Matzo flour rolled into little balls and had a delicous butter flavor. I would love to make this for my mom for Thanksgiving...she would be very surprised. There may have been a slight onion flavor to this soup also...it has been decades.

Good morning Girls, Thought I would report on this recipe. I made it last night and it was Yummy.
HOWEVER!!! The recipe does not call for the eggs needed for the little dumplings so please add to the recipe that you will need 2 farm fresh eggs in the butter ball dumplings. This will make happy little dumplings. Otherwise you get mush. Or really thick soup because without the eggs you have added a lot of RHU

I remember a wonderful delecatessin in Toledo, OH near my growing up home. They had the best matzo ball soup and Reuben sandwiches. They retired their business many years ago but I judge all soups and sandwiches by their standards now. Mmmmm.

Sounds yummy! Like a lighter version of chicken and dumplings. I'm printing it up!

I hope your mom loves it, Meadowlark!

Oh Diane Thank You! This sounds alot like what my Mom made! The little dumplings have the nicest and richest butter flavor and so good with the chicken! My Mom will love this! I can hear her laughing in delight on Thanksgiving!
