I was thinking about making things this year for folks that I know, but not well, instead of the myriad of $5.00 gift cards here and there that add up a million $$$$...

For the guys in my office, I'm making spice mixes (a spicy "fireworks" rub and an herb rub) for them, put in jam sized canning jars--I'll decorate the lids with holiday fabric, or tie with festive ribbons, and tie a "how to" card to the label. The two guy associates here had a "grill off" in the summer, to see which was best, charcoal or gas, so I know they'll appreciate them!!!!!

For the "other" folks, I'm just kindof at a loss--I make homemade "Turtles", but most of the people I know are on a health kick, or have diabetes!

What other savory kitchen items do you make for folks?

My library has a series of books called "Gifts in a jar" and there are books for soups, and dips & rubs, as well as the usual cookies & sweet things. You provide the dry ingredients, and then type up the instructions, with what else to add, & dress it up in a pretty jar.

Go to the dollar store and pick up some coffee mugs in pretty colors, and then buy a bulk kit of yummy coffee or hot cocoa, split up into serving size batches and place inside the mug! YUM YUM! They can have a treat, and then keep the mug as a gift!

A couple of my favorites:

- beer bread mix
- jar mixes (brownies or cookies)
- infused vinegars or oils
- flavored salts and sugars

Infused vinegars are really easy- just put the vinegar on the stove, simmer for 20 minutes with your herbs, spices, chilis or whatever, then strain, cool and bottle. Add a fresh sprig or piece of your flavoring to the jar for a decorative touch.

What about buying bulk of some of MaryJane's food and dividing it up into small jam jars with instructions if you run out of time? That is what I am doing! :D I decided I just had too much going on this year to do my own!

Those are both really good ideas. I think I made a chutney last year with cranberries (Tasha's recipe) but I don't know about canning it...might be possible....Tasha???????

Infused vinegar...do you have any recipes? I know this sounds weird, but I bought my mil some blueberry (from a local blueberry society) a few years ago, and it's still sitting on her stove back--even as a gourmet cook, it's like she doesn't know what to do with it!!!!

How about infused vinegar? You could use in a salad dressings or marinades.
