Woo hoo! Stuie and I are working our way through my Amish cookbook and finding it a tasty trip. Last week I made a couple of gallons of chicken stock (using an organic chicken and local veggies of course). We had two dinners of the most fabulous chicken soup ever and froze the rest for other uses.

Last night we made a huge streusel topping apple pie using local huge Honey Crisp apples, cream, walnuts and crust with lard (I have become addicted to lard for pastry baking. It makes the flakiest crusts I have ever seen) and a little pear turnover with the trimmings. Talk about heaven! We were going to take it to our chapter meeting tonight but it got cancelled in favor of next week so I guess we'll be making another! this is a really big pie so anybody who is in the neighborhood, come get some!

And today, I'm making beef stock with lovely marrow bones and local veggies. It takes 12 hours to simmer after you roast the bones and veggies. That's gonna be something!

I love fall and the cool weather which invites us to make some comfort food.

Farmgirl hug,
Patricia

Trisha, I found one.

Poppyseed Cake
1 pkg yellowcake mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup oil
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1 box vanilla instant pudding
1 cup hot water
Blend all ingredients together well.
pour into greased bundt pan and bake 350*
45 to 60 minutes.

Icing- 8 oz. cream cheese and 1/2 cup butter, cream together slowly, it will take 2 lbs, powder sugar, add enough milk for right consistency, add almond and vanilla extract to taste. hope this is the one!

Trisha, I looked through my Amish/Mennonite cookbooks and I'm sorry - no lemon poppyseed cake. Good luck with tracking it down!

I bought a mennonite cook book from a gal that her family used and they used the recipes in their store. Monster Cookies, pumpkin rolls, they are definate treats and good recipes. I do love these recipes. I am going to go dig them out of the cabinet.

My mom just bought me the "Mennonite Community Cookbook" by Mary Emma Showalter. She had a copy years ago and lost it. We've been looking for it ever since. One neat place to try is half.com. It's part of ebay and you can find all kinds of bizarre, old, out of print books there.

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

Does anyone have a recipe for a Mennonite lemon poppyseed loaf that has a lemon glaze on top of it, that they can share with me? My husband and I stayed at an inn in North Idaho recently where it was served for breakfast. The innkeeper said it was made by local Mennonite women. I have searched the web, only finding a blog about a woman who loved to eat it.

OK, finally got a minute to check the library. Emily, do you know how much the cookbook is? If I can, I'd like to buy it or swap for some cookbooks I have that I'm weeding out.

I'm going to visit my sister this weekend and I just realized that I'll be driving right through Shipshewana on my way to her new place (just moved out of state). I can pick up the cookbook if you are missing it from your collection.

Emily, thank you so much for thinking of me! I'm going to see if my library has the "Heritage" one and I will get back to you. What fun!!

Hi Patricia!
I just got back from my monthly Amish meat run. They where out of your two favorites. But I did pick up one that looks really good. It's called "Heritage Country Harvest Cookbook" Over 700 favorite recipes from the Amish in Northern Indiana. They also had 5 others that were all either northern Indiana or Shipshewana IN cookbooks. I debated between the one I bought and another one that had included some recipes from my favorite Amish restaurant in Shipshewana. If you would like to try one of the cookbooks let me know and maybe we could do an Amish cookbook exchange! (but it will be about a month before I go back :( )

Nancy Jo I think you will love The Amish Cook. Elizabeth was such a sweet woman and such a way with words that you almost think you are right there with her.

Julia, I have that cookbook and I love it. I love to make Amish recipes but I find that I also need to work like the Amish in return so my clothes will still fit! lol All so rich and tasty. I think my all time favorite so far is one called The Amish Cook by Elizabeth Coblentz. She wrote a cooking article for a newspaper in Ohio I think and in the book she gives recipes from that column along with stories about her everyday life, and great photos.

Blessings....
Sarah
