Woo hoo! Stuie and I are working our way through my Amish cookbook and finding it a tasty trip. Last week I made a couple of gallons of chicken stock (using an organic chicken and local veggies of course). We had two dinners of the most fabulous chicken soup ever and froze the rest for other uses.

Last night we made a huge streusel topping apple pie using local huge Honey Crisp apples, cream, walnuts and crust with lard (I have become addicted to lard for pastry baking. It makes the flakiest crusts I have ever seen) and a little pear turnover with the trimmings. Talk about heaven! We were going to take it to our chapter meeting tonight but it got cancelled in favor of next week so I guess we'll be making another! this is a really big pie so anybody who is in the neighborhood, come get some!

And today, I'm making beef stock with lovely marrow bones and local veggies. It takes 12 hours to simmer after you roast the bones and veggies. That's gonna be something!

I love fall and the cool weather which invites us to make some comfort food.

Farmgirl hug,
Patricia

I have a cookbook "The Best of Mennonite Fellowship Meals" that is great as well. Everything I've tried we have enjoyed. I remember yummy...and HUGE meals at my Grandma's house - they are Mennonite and many of the relatives are Amish. I don't think they know how to cook small meals! LOL

I have the sweetest little book called 'An Amish Table' by Phyllis Pellman Good. she has written other Amish and Mennonite cookbooks. She and her husband are directors of The People's Place, a heritage center that interpets Amish and Mennonite faith and life, located in Lancaster County, Pa. MB

Which Amish cookbook did you use? There are so many of them and they all look so good. My DH and I was looking through them the last time we went to get our meat (we drive an 1 1/2 hours to an Amish community for our meat) and could not make up our mind. We decided to wait til the next trip. Any suggestions as to your personal favorite would be great!

Emily, I'm always on the lookout for Amish cookbooks I don't know about. The ones I use are two by Marcia Adams: Cooking from Quilt Country and New Recipies from Quilt Country. I think they're the best so far. I wish I could go with you on your next trip!

I think that I saw the Quilt County recipe books. Do they have a picture of an Amish quilt hanging on a clothes line on the cover? Most of the ones I have seen have been written by ladies with the last name Yoder. I'll have to pay closer attention to the names next time (next week I think)and I'll let you know which ones they have around here.

Emily, I think you're thinking of the right books. They have several different photos on the cover. Let me know what you come up with and thanks!

Julia, I have that cookbook and I love it. I love to make Amish recipes but I find that I also need to work like the Amish in return so my clothes will still fit! lol All so rich and tasty. I think my all time favorite so far is one called The Amish Cook by Elizabeth Coblentz. She wrote a cooking article for a newspaper in Ohio I think and in the book she gives recipes from that column along with stories about her everyday life, and great photos.

Blessings....

Nancy Jo I think you will love The Amish Cook. Elizabeth was such a sweet woman and such a way with words that you almost think you are right there with her.

Hi Patricia!
I just got back from my monthly Amish meat run. They where out of your two favorites. But I did pick up one that looks really good. It's called "Heritage Country Harvest Cookbook" Over 700 favorite recipes from the Amish in Northern Indiana. They also had 5 others that were all either northern Indiana or Shipshewana IN cookbooks. I debated between the one I bought and another one that had included some recipes from my favorite Amish restaurant in Shipshewana. If you would like to try one of the cookbooks let me know and maybe we could do an Amish cookbook exchange! (but it will be about a month before I go back :( )

I'm going to visit my sister this weekend and I just realized that I'll be driving right through Shipshewana on my way to her new place (just moved out of state). I can pick up the cookbook if you are missing it from your collection.

OK, finally got a minute to check the library. Emily, do you know how much the cookbook is? If I can, I'd like to buy it or swap for some cookbooks I have that I'm weeding out.
