- the correct fat for a successful elephant milk replacer - how to hand raise baby elephants for successful reintegration back into the wild
Two pretty important things to help protect and preserve the Kenyan elephant population.
- She learned both of things thru failure, heartbreaking failures. Such sadness that would have prevented many from continuing.
- She was only married to David Sheldrick for 17 years. He was a major force in Kenya's conservation movement. His reputation and knowledge of the ecosystem were immense. Daphne was able to parlay those into something incredible - The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org)
- growing up in Africa, if it hailed in the rainy season you collected the hail to make ice cream! (silly thing to learn but coming from MN, it stuck)
This woman was fighting for the environment before anyone knew that we had to. 55 wild born babies are known to the Sheldrick Trust and that is just the female side of the 176 orphans that the trust has released back into the wild.
That doesn't sound like much success but before her, an orphaned elephant baby - usually orphaned because of mankind, would have perished.

Daphne sounds like an amazing lady! Good for her! Environmental protection is so important for the future of this planet. Being an ice hockey Mom and Nana, I understand the hail and ice cream thing...very interesting tidbit of knowledge.
