For my Languages/Culture badge, I have chosen the Cajun culture of Louisiana. The intermediate level required me to research an influential person and I have chosen Cléoma Breaux Falcon.
Cléoma Breaux was born May 27, 1906 in Crowley, Louisiana. In 1928, she and her future husband, Joe Falcon, recorded the first commercial recording of Cajun music ever made, extending the voice of French speaking Louisiana into the mainstream. She was one of the very few Cajun women of her time to perform in public. Joe, a talented accordion player, said she was one of the few guitar players he knew who changed chords during a song. In 1929 Cléoma, along with her two brothers, made the first recording of “Jolie Blonde, one of the most famous Cajun songs of all times and sometimes referred to as the Cajun national anthem.
Although she was a central figure in two of the most famous Cajun records ever made, Cléoma wouldn’t be entered in to the Cajun music Hall of Fame until 2002, five years after her husband. She was the first woman to be inducted. She died on April 8, 1941 at the young age of 34 from an extended illness.

Hannah, this woman is new to me as well and I am glad you shared her story with us. The Cajun culture is quite old and interesting. I have been to New Orleans twice and enjoyed tours that spoke of the long and rich history of the place.

Hannah I agree. We actually continued to listen to it while I finished looking around the forum, so when I turned it off to close my computer my daughter was upset asking why I turned it off lol! You have made a big impression on her with this new music!

Krista, that makes me happy your kids enjoyed it! So many forms of traditional music out there are so dependent on young folk showing an interest!

Wow Hannah! It was fun looking her up and listening to her sing. Even my kids enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing and introducing me to some new music.

There are also various YouTube recordings of her singing as well. She had a voice that is reminiscent of the Carter family type sound.

Interesting Hannah, I love to listen to Cajun music and watch videos of people dancing to it. I’m sure I’ve heard the song before but had to look it up on YouTube to be sure. It’s sad Cléoma died so young. I would love to see if I can find a recording of them performing.
