Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 10:43:10 AM I have been working on my Intermediate Level badge in this category. My latest project this winter was doing a repair/makeover on a loveseat that had some serious damage below the right arm from my cat scratching on it and, shredding it.
I forgot to take a "before" pic of the loveseat but here is a pic of our sofa, which looks like this on both ends. (next project for us) The loveseat looked pretty much the same.
After much contemplation as to how to do this economically and without a lot of major ado, this is the end result, using hammer-tacker/stapler, Gorilla Glue and a rubber backed throw rug. It may not suit everyone's fancy but we're happy with the result.
Thanks! CJ

Posted - Mar 14 2017 : 4:00:02 PM Thank you girls! It'll be a while before anything happens with the sofa . . maybe not till winter. Spring is coming which means outside work for several months. We'll see. CJ

Posted - Mar 13 2017 : 04:28:26 AM Great sofa idea. My sofa is the only place my cat would use his claws on. My hubby said let him be.. so I have shreads too. Now that he's older, he rarely does this. The sofa is older than the cat, and the sofa needs some serious cleaning and repair---But oh so comfy for and afternoon nap with the pup. So.... either I can keep people from visiting --- ha Ha.... or be inspired and work on this badge. Grins. Have a lovely Day. Mary

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 4:13:42 PM CeeJay, I think your solution turned out great! Cats can really tear up furniture and rugs. Mine have never used a scratch post and this current kitty was inherited from my daughter who had him declawed very early. I don' like declawing cats but the way he behaves is that our couch would have been toast.

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 12:17:25 PM Silky has a scratch post which she uses. It came with the grass rope around it, which she scratched until it fell to pieces. I recovered the post with sisal rope which is MUCH MORE sturdy and cat-scratch proof. I've seen the doilies used for that but I knew that they would not be adequate . . . she'd just tear them up too! I should have gotten the scratch post sooner than I did. CJ

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 11:45:40 AM I agree with Marilyn,,, what a creative re-do!
I had a sofa (years ago) that one of my kitties was starting to scratch... so I stitched some store bought doillies to the arm... and then we bought several of those cardboard scratcher boxes,,, and LOTS of kitty nip! lolol! Don't have the sofa anymore,, but we still have Peekie kitty...

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 11:31:14 AM Nice job, CJ! That's a very creative way to fix your loveseat without spending a ton of money. Upholstery can be very expensive sometimes. Good luck with your sofa.

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 11:07:51 AM Thanks Marilyn!
The sofa will be another matter, as it has other wear and tear. It's old but we really like it and it's comfy . . so we'll see!
Thanks again! CJ

Posted - Mar 07 2017 : 11:05:46 AM That is a very creative solution! And it looks quite nice, actually. You wouldn't have to tell people it was a rug, even. Very clever.
