Posted - Oct 22 2015 : 7:57:05 PM I am excited to begin working on my merit badges and sharing my experiences with everyone! After much debating I was finally able to pick the top 4 badges I plan to accomplish first! I chose….
1.Pampered Pets (Outpost) -It’s important to me that my pets are healthy and will live a long happy life. Knowing what is best for them will allow me to enhance their life.
2. Bread Making (Farm Kitchen) -I have always enjoyed cooking and now look forward to a better way of cooking.
3. Embroidery (Stitching and Crafting) - Would love to make something special for my baby boy just like my Grandma Butters made for me.
4. Water Conservation (Cleaning Up) - I love the idea of helping save the planet as well as help me save money on my bill.
With that in mind, what merit badges do you fellow farmgirls plan on accomplishing first? Or working towards right now? Any of them hold a special meaning that drives you to accomplish one over another?
Much luck and enjoyment in your merit badge experiences!

Posted - Nov 07 2024 : 2:38:03 PM Christine...I love your list! You are definitely on the right track! Something else you might look into is reading through the badges and seeing if you have already done some of them without knowing it? I would love to read your blog when you get it up and running!!! Good luck and just have fun with them :)

Posted - Nov 06 2024 : 6:05:46 PM Hi Christina, Wow, you have quite a list. Looks exciting. Thanks for the inspiration. I had not noticed the Carpe Cocoa badge. With the holidays quickly approaching, it will be a perfect chance to earn badges and share the results with family and friends. Thanks again. So glad you have joined us. It is a great group of which to be a part. Terri in Ohio

Posted - Nov 04 2024 : 2:11:14 PM Welcome Christine! So happy to see you stop by! I personally bounce around and do a lot of the beginner badges and see what I like. If I really enjoy it I will move on to the intermediate level, but I have only done a couple expert badges. It looks like you already have a great list started. I say just work on what calls out to you the most and have fun! Keep us posted on what you are working on.

Posted - Nov 02 2024 : 10:23:26 PM Welcome Christine - Glad to have a new farmgirl here.
I haven't finished a badge although I believe there are some I could finish easily. Time is always necessary for anything worthwhile, and I haven't found a time to work on any badges. I like this list of proposed badges and the reasons for doing them. This is a good start and I see that there has been some planning. Whatever is chosen, don't worry about how long it takes to finish, ask for help whenever needed and have fun.

Posted - Nov 02 2024 : 1:44:15 PM Hi ! I am brand new and not sure how many badges to start lest they become UFOs and PhDs... Any guidance from veterans? Do you generally go deep on a badge topic (beginner through advanced) or sample a bunch of beginner levels of badges and decide what to double down on? Are there ones I should think about starting sooner because they take a lot of patience? Any "sleeper" badges that you found to be surprisingly rewarding in retrospect?
These are the ones I've short-listed so far-- * Outstepping - through hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail December 26-30, 2024 (Outpost 2) * Let's Get Physical - training for Salem, OR Half Ironman 70.3 in July 2025 (Make it Easy 7) * Blogging - this would help document my meritorious and mis-adventures (Each Other 19) * Bibliophile - reading is my favorite recreational activity and several of these badges have titles to track down (Each Other 25) * Carpe Cocoa - who could say no to a Truffle Party? This looked rewardingly short and sweet (Farm Kitchen 19) * Get it Together - to hone my knife sharpening skills (Farm Kitchen 9) * Gaining Ground - we have been lazy-composting for years but the current bin is almost full and I would love to quantify how much compost we generate to figure out how much garden bed square footage it could support, so this seemed timely (and requires a lot of lead time) (Garden Gate 3) * UFO's - starting things is the easy part, so maybe having this badge running in the background would keep me going. Posted - Oct 22 2024 : 6:00:08 PM Hi Shennandoah, I would be happy to be a pen pal. I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I had a pen pal as a child and we wrote back and forth regularly for a few years. Unfortunately when we finally met up, we discovered we didn't have much in common besides liking to write letters.

Posted - Oct 22 2024 : 5:54:18 PM Hi Shennandoah! I might have a couple of answers for you! When I did my embroidery badge, I had emailed Brian at the main office and asked him the same question. No, you don't have to do the vitamin ball designs. Something that you like is fine, he said it was supposed to be fun. I made a knitted bear and a crocheted bunny for a safe toys badge and it was fine. I think as long as they fit the "safe" category it's ok...make sure the buttons are one snugly if they aren't sewn on, etc. And I think your Front Porch Fridays idea is PERFECT for the Farmgirl Spirit badge! What a great idea!!! How long have you been doing this??

Posted - Oct 22 2024 : 3:07:09 PM I lied one more question. For farmgirl spirit intermediate I’m wondering if this neighborhood initiative I started would count towards it. I started hosting “Front Porch Fridays”:for the neighborhood. Everyone gets together at our house on the first a Friday as a way to meet all the new folks moving in and build connections with neighbors they may not know well. We have a FB group but this gets everyone face to face and all ages, mix of folks. Everyone loves it and it’s sparked other conversations of other things we can do to welcome neighbors and build connections including walking groups, rotating bunko night, etc. would that count as greeting neighbors?
I did buy the domain and hope to create a “movement” to encourage more neighborhoods to pick it up but for now focused on just ours.

Posted - Oct 22 2024 : 2:55:56 PM Hey ladies! I’m working on a few badges, and have a few questions:
1. Anyone want to be a pen pal for my Letter Writing badge? 2. For the safe toys, do they have to be sewn or does knitted toys/animals/dolls count? 3. For expert embroidery, can I choose my own designs for the tea towels or do they have to be vitamin ball?
That’s it for now! Just completed a 9 hour marathon zoom meeting so my eyes are melting lol

Posted - Oct 14 2024 : 1:27:49 PM I also think another big thing is many people think that the damage that's being done won't happen for years, so for now it's okay. The " I'll worry about it then" mentality instead of being proactive.

Posted - Oct 13 2024 : 11:55:12 AM The biggest problem is that people just don't know how to do reuse and recycling, or they believe it is too difficult or are afraid to do it. It certainly doesn't help that the organizations that can tell us make it seem so difficult. I realize that I am doing almost everything I can. I try not to lose hope.

Posted - Oct 13 2024 : 10:44:27 AM Good Job, Terri! We need to realize exactly that...we are all in this together! I keep trying to get my neighbors to recycling and reuse. I have been able to share some of my unused things with others. They just don't seem to get it, but we have to keep working at it and setting an example for others to follow. There is no quick fix to this thing because people have gotten so used to just throwing things away...use it once and throw it out. We need to get back to the "good ole days" as far as recycling is concerned - cloth diapers, no paper towels, grocery items in glass instead of plastic. Reusing glass jars, returning the glass soda and beer bottles, compost yard waste and kitchen scraps...and the list goes on and on!

Posted - Oct 07 2024 : 1:26:35 PM Wow, Krista. I had never heard of being fined for not recycling. I have heard that some garbage collection companies here (BC) insist on clear bags and only one black plastic for private items, which I guess is aimed at people separating their recycling from garbage. We get recycling picked up every two weeks, but I'm not the best at paying attention to the date and often have a large amount to put out after 6 weeks. Services here vary depending on where you live.

Posted - Oct 07 2024 : 1:09:23 PM Terri, I have heard the same thing happens here in Utah. But I personally haven't looked into it. I was just more annoyed when I heard about it. Some cities like the one I grew up in require you to recycle and you will be fined if you never put out your recycle bin. But the city I live in now charges you to pick up your recycle. So there is definitely no consistency. It's just irritating to know that you will be fined for not recycling but they are just burning it anyway. Makes no sense. I am curious to see what you find out as well.
