Posted - Apr 22 2011 : 10:47:11 AM I find this badge difficult, and expensive to complete.
Expert Level
* Build your own wall tent or buy a vintage camp trailer. * Learn to catch and then cook the catch of the day.
Just the wood alone for our split barn door, we spent about $100.00, and still have another much larger door to build. Not to mention the chicken coop for the meat chickens. I would love to buy a vintage trailer or build a wall tent, but with 6 kids and being a stay-at-home mom, I find this badge beyond our spending limits. Anyone else finding a level of badge that requires a purchase of this sort difficult?

That is, if I can keep my lab from running off with them (she loves to drag the huge ones around the yard - ha ha!). I am sure the kids would love to help too. They love to camp out in the yard and cook out too.

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 10:40:22 AM I'm glad to know MJF is open to alternatives. I had read this one and thought "That's something I have no interest/need for." Yeah! I love this place! Connie

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 10:36:51 AM Beleive it or not we built a addition to our cabin using free wood pallets, and free windows. (I find a lot of free windows on freecycle now, back then we just curb shopped on garbage day! lol)

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 10:36:34 AM That's a great idea about the pallets, Heather. Our February-March issue had an article about building a barn out of pallets.

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 05:36:51 AM Thanks Heather. I may search on-line and see if I can find anything. My husband and I want to build a small cabin on the property, but it could be many years.

Posted - Apr 26 2011 : 10:52:06 PM You can make a ton of really sturdy structures using free pallets. Ask on free cycle, also ask on free cycle for a free trailer, and such.

Posted - Apr 26 2011 : 10:01:18 PM Don't know if it is still up there but AOL had a topic today on this guy building houses from trash (wood, fixtures, etc.) that were taken from the trash dump. Don't know if this would help you but the houses shown were cheap and really kool! He was all self taught too. Joey

It wouldn't be necessary to build a whole campground but a picnic area might be more doable maybe even a canopy. I'm not sure how much space you have to play with but the lean-to wouldn't take up much room, let me know if that'll work. Thanks.

Posted - Apr 22 2011 : 10:51:46 AM Kevin, if you reading this post, can you provide alternatives to this? New family tent?
Thanks!
