Posted - Aug 11 2004 : 1:34:20 PM Well, I have read about the pack trip and the wildfires, and now I would like for you all to pray and think good thoughts for us here in Florida, as we face two tropical systems heading our way in one week. I have put in supplies - water, canned goods, charcoal, lighter fluid, and I have many oil lamps and flashlights and candles. But that does not help when a tree falls on your roof!
I am just hoping and praying I do not need them! My daughter's baby has been sick all week and it has been trying. High fever and no reason for it. She had several bad bites last week, so West Nile comes across our minds.
I have been through a hurricane before and it is not pretty. No electricity for long periods of time in this heat is not fun.
Please think good thoughts for us. Hidezgal, I am glad you are back safe and sound. What an experience!

Thank you so much for the thoughts and caring notes. Yes, one week into hurricane season and we have a tropical system trying to evolve. Hopefully, they are saying it will be mostly a rainy week-end. And I know after last year, the newscasters and weathermen will jump on anything and make a big deal out of it. But it is not great to hear about so early in June. Yesterday I passed a sign that read 176 days left in hurricane season. Way too long!
Speaking of weather, I have been seeing the tornado alley storms and having also been thinking of Meadowlark. Hope all is well.
Lori - if you are reading this, whereabouts in the panhandle are you staying right now? jpbluesky

Posted - Sep 17 2004 : 2:22:55 PM Good to hear from you, Jeannie. I was becoming concerned, after viewing all of the reports on tv. I'm glad you have minimal damage and our thoughts, prayers and support are with those less fortunate, too. Wonder how Lori fared? Hopefully okay too.

Posted - Sep 17 2004 : 2:19:43 PM We made it through. I cannot say how unbelievably fortunate and blessed we were, though my heart is literally aching for those just west of us. Every time a bad band of bad weather would trail through, it would be to the east or west of us, and though our yard is a holy mess, I still have a roof and power!!! There are many trees down around town, but it could have been so much worse that nobody cares about what we have to clean up. The sun is out today, and I walked out of my house knowing for a few days I can say there is no hurricane coming! I have gotten so used to having that in the back of my mind.
People in towns on the east and west of us had terrible tornadoes and deaths. Pensacola will not have power for weeks and 10 bridges into the city are ruined. School is cancelled indefinitely. If any of you can, give to the Red Cross or find a way to send something to help Florida and Alabama.
Our neighbors nearest to us have a family from Pensacola staying with them. They cannot get any phone calls through and cannot return home, so they have no idea what their home is like. His office (a bank) is under a foot of water.
Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts. They do help. You are a great group of caring folks.

Posted - Sep 16 2004 : 11:03:03 AM Just heard Jeanne is upgraded to a hurrican early this morning. How are you holding up Lori? Even downgraded to a 1 after it hit land it seems like I van has done a great deal of damage. Because we are by cold water the storms we get are not called hurricanes but the damage from the 70+ mile an hour winds is still devastating so I can sympathise with all of you. My prayers are going out. Eileen

Posted - Sep 15 2004 : 10:58:44 AM It seems you will be on the west side of Ivan. What a difference that makes! The east side has all the furry as it slings around like skaters playing crack the whip. The outer skater is going the fastest and will hit the hardest if it runs into anything.
Even here is my city, we will have winds of up to 70, and we are on the far eastern fringe as of right now.
Glad your hubby made it home! He must have been one tired puppy.

Posted - Sep 15 2004 : 09:11:46 AM Hi All, I have been tuned in to the local weather channel but have heard nothing about a hurricane following Ivan. Where is it and what is the name? The photographic coverage of Ivan is monstrous! It appears that it will touch everywhere in the gulf and beyond with the potential tornadoes as well as rains , winds and high water. I am sending you all as much light and protection as I can in my prayers. We here on the west coast have been experiencing unusual weather as well but nothing as devastating as you. Our exceptionally long dry hot spell that brought about forest fires and threats of forest fires has been suddenly, overnight plunged into torrential rain squalls with lightning and very unseasonally cool and humid temperatures. We have had to light a fire in the evening this past week to dry out the house and warm our selves up. Our daughter who lives in Wisconsin on the shores of lake Superior has had the fire going all summer long except for about 3 to 4 days where the temp has soared to 90 from low 50 daytime temps and almost freezing night time temps. She sent photos of their new baby in a snow suit in the middle of August. I guess the weather is changing! I think we all knoe someone who will be touched by Ivan. Our prayers are there for you Eileen

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 5:33:35 PM I had heard that the traffic was really slow. They have mandatorily evacuated Panama City Beach, and I hear the whole town, too, is a ghost town. That is a lot of people on the road. Hope your hubby gets home soon. We at this point are not going to leave, since everything is saying we are on the far edge of the swath. But you cannot bet on aynthing with hurricanes.
Sounds like you are quite prepared! Good for you, it will keep you safe.
Let's keep in touch as long as we have power.

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 10:01:14 AM Lori - where is Breaux Bridge, La? We are both under the same hurricane watch, it seems, as it extends all the way to St. Marks, FL, just a few miles south of our city.
I am glad you got that generator. My hubby will not buy one, and I have wanted one for years, at least to keep the food cold in power outages.
Take care and let's pray that this thing, wherever it goes, weakens a lot before it goes there.

Posted - Sep 13 2004 : 6:02:05 PM In college I studied Geography and later Environmental Sciences - there didn't seem to be anything but theories and I don't think anything definite can be said about the environment, except that common sense tells me we can't continue to destroy the air, water and soil without reaping the results. I know that we have had a definite change in our weather patterns, but whether or not the climate (long term weather patterns) is changing will not be seen or know for many years to come. Our Spring comes faster, Summers seem hotter and wetter; the leaves on our maple tree are already changing color, and we know about the hurricanes/tropical storms. I also read that we can expect more violent hurricanes, and more often than in the past. We can only know that we must change our thinking patterns also, and be prepared.

Posted - Sep 13 2004 : 12:55:31 PM Thank you, Clare. That is a very wise observation about facing one storm after another. We all work so hard at focusing on joy and the positive aspects of life, and it becomes more and more difficult to do when you are tested again and again. But there must be a reason for that, also.
I heard this week-end that another reason for the storms getting stronger is the earth's axis is actually gradually increasing it's tilt of angle in relation to the sun. It has changed three degrees - but I cannot remember how long it has taken it to do that. That will eventually change all weather patterns, and we do seem to be having unusual weather in many parts of our country.
Anyway, we are still waiting and watching!

Posted - Sep 13 2004 : 08:47:53 AM Jeannie, I've been thinking about you!... I hope you're able to batten down the hatches and endure the storm. I heard last night from a Weather Channel hurricane specialist that he expects hurricanes to only intensify in the coming years, due to all of the global factors. Personally, I don't know if I could withstand the onslaught. It just breaks down ones spirit to have one storm after another roll through. Blessings and light and safety to you and your family, Jeannie.

Posted - Sep 12 2004 : 6:18:58 PM Thank you guys for all the good thoughts and prayers. You have been so diligent! Now here comes Ivan, and this one looks worse than the threat of any of the prior storms to our area. South Florida will be okay, thank God. They are still cleaning up. We came home early from our log cabin vacation because we felt we needed to be here to make informed decisions. We may be leaving the city Tuesday morning.
Please continue to pray for the whole state of Florida. Can't take much more. I am definitely ready for blueskies now!!!!!

Posted - Sep 10 2004 : 12:29:07 PM Unfortunately it looks like Ivan is set for the Keys or another part of Florida in a few days. I just hope and pray that everyone in Florida will be able to get through another. My brother in law & wife are leaving their summer cottage here (sold it) and will be leaving for their Florida home to stay year round. They are leaving on Friday, hope they will be ok, as Ivan is set for landfall about then. My sister in law & husband are leaving for their new modular home in Florida in Oct. - they will be there for the winter. We just hope they, and everyone will be OK. We had over 3.99 inches of rain here on Tues. & Wed. thank to Frances, lots of streets & basement were flooded and a little 3 yr. old boy drowned after wandering away from home. Prayers to his parents & family please.
