Hey girls! Did you SEE the Steelers today? They're back! Now THAT was a game! YES!!!

I also have to stand corrected somewhat. My hubby's cousin told me all about the Michael Vick interview where he was a real smart aleck about everything that happened. Cindy, I'm willing to bet the kind of thing you're talking about was what she was sharing with me. I was horrified - again. I honestly don't know what to think. I pray to God he has changed. It sure seemed like it to me when I did a little research. I'm still willing to give him a second chance, but I will be watching, for sure!

Nini-
Sorry my auto correct auto corrected your name!

And also thank you for the updated info on Vick. I was a local to his area when the whol dog thing broke, and without getting into detail, let's just say his behavior for quite a while after that was not at all contrite and I wrote him off. Every news item for many months and maybe even iup to two years later was quite bad.

It is good to know he's trying to atone.

Inn,

Thank you for a very thoughtful post.

As fat as football food, I think I have posted this incredible item somewhere else on this site, but there is an amazing appetizer called "Devils on horseback". You take a large date, remove the pit and replace it with a clove of roasted garlic. Wrap it in half a slice of bacon (so one 10 inch slice is now two 5 inch slices, not two thin 10 in slices) and bake it until the bacon is crisp. Serve it with garlic aioli, stand back and listen to the "oh my gosh that's good" comments.

They are oddly fabulous with salt, sweet, goo and crunch in one bite!

Nini- thanks for your wonderful/kind post. I so agree with your last paragraph. True, true, true, in my opinion. When I hear things, especially on TV, I research, research, research.

Marly - you know, I always say that the Steelers' method is to bide their time, expending all the other team's energy and giving them a false sense of security in the first half, then to turn the tables, and hammer them down, pulling out all the stops in the second half to win. A lot of the team is young and need some professional seasoning. They'll get there... They're Steelers! LOL!

I'm interested for SURE, Amy! You know, it's so funny... My son HATES veggies thanks to my foster daughter's constant "yuuuuucks" when she was teenager... But spinach? He LOVES it!!! Whodathunkit?! LOL! So, yes, please do share!!! I will have to check on my recipes this week and see what I can post for you girls, too. Today, still canning! ;)

I'm afraid my last post was typed so quickly while in the middle of a canning session that I could probably have edited it to be cleaner and more grammatically correct - 'sorry about that. Yes, I know what happened... There are no words. None. Please know that none of that was directed at anyone here personally... AT ALL... I just think if a person is doing what they are supposed to do/the right thing, they deserve a second chance. That does not mean they should go unpunished, or, as we all say at this time of year, that we should ever forget - never. But I just think the guy did his time, is doing "penance," if you will; and he seems to be no longer a threat to society, but rather is trying to make things better. A friend asked me some pointed questions about other people, such as terrorists - could I forgive them as well? You are very right... It is not easy to do. But there is a difference when someone stops their activity and tries to make amends and change what they have done, vs. someone consumed by hate who is bent on murder, eradication of peoples and total destruction.

We have been watching local news since the announcement that Michael Vick was on board with the Steelers, and the protests are reported almost daily. When I heard he had signed on with the Steelers, my stomach just about hit the floor. I couldn't BELIEVE they would sign him. But I did some research to try to figure out what kind of person this man really is. Has he changed? What is he doing with his life now? I found out that not only has he been doing work for the Humane Society and working to get laws passed to make dog fighting a felony offense, he also has two foundations that support underprivileged, "at risk" children through charity, after school programs and football camps for kids, and that also have helped other important causes, such as the Virginia Tech tragedy. That being the case, I personally am willing to give him a chance to live his life and do his job. What Michael Vick did was unspeakable (I can't even think about it!), but what he is doing now definitely deserves a little consideration.

Now, please let me preface: What I'm about to say does not apply to anyone here on MJF. It seems to me that society today is so angry, so bent on seeing the worst in people, that it simply does not give people a chance to better and redeem themselves. It's a gang-up-on-the-guy-and-bully-him-til-he-disappears kind of society that seems to just take to running with a little bit of information, or, at the very least, without looking at the whole picture. I am quite ill about it. It's like a cancer, festering, spreading and destroying not only its victims, but also the perpetrators. SO destructive. Nobody - NOBODY - is without sin, and yet almost everyone is willing to pick up a sack of stones and beat a man down with it. To me, the person throwing them is no better. Quite possibly, the stone hurler is worse. How in the world is society going to get any better, when we succumb to bitterness and publicly pulverize people? Where is the true concept of rehabilitation and restoration? If we don't allow for people to change, if we don't even give them room to try, it seems to me that our society is doomed. We will miss out on some great things as a nation because we focus on the negative. We must never forget that the culmination of a person is not the bad deeds he or she has done. The greatness of a person is the willingness to change and ability to overcome and make a difference. The goal should be to better ourselves individually and as a nation. We aren't bettering anything when we continue to keep people down when they are trying.

Okay, I'm done. Honest - I'm done. I just really had to get that off of my chest. Thank you for letting me vent. :)

Love you girls! GO STEELERS!

Hugs -

Yes, forgiveness is very important, but not always easy! I just wanted to add that many of the "Vick-Tory" dogs did have happily ever afters. Check out this link:http://bestfriends.org/sanctuary/explore-sanctuary/dogtown/vicktory-dogs

I have a really yummy recipe for spinach balls my mom used to make for my dad to munch on during games so he wouldn't eat junk food. I make it when I watch a game with my daughter. Anyone interested?

Happy Day!

Nini: I somewhat agree. In the first and second quarters, the Steelers were dragging a bit. By the third quarter, they were at least trying a little harder. By the fourth quarter, they were in the game 100%. I think if there had been a fifth quarter, they may have tied the game.
I always love to read your posts. You certainly know how to put words in order.
It is reported that Michael Vick is trying to do the right thing by changing his attitude and mind about certain dogs. I agree, everyone deserves a second chance.
Having said all of the above, I like watching football for the game not for who is who. When the media starts putting the 'Hollywood spin' on players or the game, I mute the TV.
I enjoy reading about J.J. Watt and all the good he has done and continues to do. There are several players who do really good things. To me, that is not 'Hollywood Spin'.
Thanks for posting. Hugs to you.

I don't know, Marly. The Steelers looked pretty darned sad to me... A lot of the game, it looked as if they were playing in a pre-season scrimmage or something. They need some work, but I have faith they will get there! :) And the Patriots, well... I just have such a problem with them on many levels... And I grew up watching them play while sitting on the cold metal bleachers in Foxboro! Let's just say: It ought to be an interesting season! :)

Laura - that's so funny you say that! My son was saying Thursday night that no matter where the Steelers are playing, you always see black and gold flooding the stadium, and you always hear the crowd calling out, "Heeeeeeeath!" Too funny. And my brother is a staunch Ravens fan, but years ago while visiting them in Baltimore, I ran out to the grocery store and found - wonder of wonders - a STEELERS bar! They're everywhere. You just can't help catch the fever! LOL!

Girls, I understand your feelings about Michael Vick, I do. There are no words to describe my rage about what he participated in. But the thing is, the guy went to prison, served his time, and is devoting time to changing things for the better. I don't know if he's genuinely concerned about making amends, but at least he's trying to turn it around in some way. I think everyone deserves forgiveness and a second chance. Giving him a little room to grow, change and do his job doesn't hurt another animal. What is done is done. It was absolutely horrific what he was involved in, but he's not involved in that evil vile cruelty anymore. That's a very positive thing. And I've got to hand it to him that he is trying to make a difference - regardless of his motivation. As far as him playing, he's not first string - he's there as a back up. If he's given a chance, let's just hope he is the consummate professional and does his stuff. :)

I guess I think of it this way: Think of all the players who do terrible things to women. Think of all the players who do drugs or traffic them. Think of all those who break the law. Think of those who cheat their way to The Ring. Think of the horrible things that many of them surely do that we may never know about. Why should we single out Michael Vick? If we really think about it, we'd probably never watch the game, you know? Big Ben IS a phenomenal quarterback, truly, Marly. He keeps me on the edge of my seat with a knot in my stomach every time he is handed the ball! LOL! But when you think about the scandal that surrounded him, it really could ruin the game for you. I say, let the guys do their job, enjoy watching their poetry in motion, and allow for and pray that the law, the franchise and their consciences effect a positive change in them. If the law sets a punishment and they serve their time, and if they show a marked change in their behavior, why should we hold it against them til the end of time? Would any of us want that if we were in their shoes? I can't imagine what it would be like, having done something so horrible, realizing the profound depth of my "sin" (for lack of a better word); then gone on to serve prison time; having suffered continued public humiliation and shaming; then gone on to do whatever I could to make changes for the better, and STILL have people be so unforgiving, and having to live with the hate for the rest of my life. I have to ask: what would satisfy society in order for them to redeem and prove himself? It has to start somewhere. Having said that, though, if they continue the behavior, they shouldn't be allowed to play, let alone walk the streets. Whoa to those people, indeed!

So, does anyone have any special recipes for game time they'd like to share?

Have a great day! GO STEELERS!

Hugs -

Nini

Amy, not all of us like or enjoy football. But-- I'm happy your daughters joy of football is "squishing" over you. LOL.
Go Eagles! I like something about all the teams, but my heart is with the Saints. I now live in Texas, so I've come to really like the Texans. Do any of you know J.J. WATT????? OMGoodness. George Strait and J. J. Watt in the same state!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a really fun post! I'm not a exactly football fan (please forgive me!) But my daughter is such a big fan that some of it squishes over onto me. She grew up watching football with her Pop Pop and stayed a big fan. Here goes, ladies . . This is Eagles country. Speaking of Michael Vick, so glad he's not an Eagle anymore! You really have to try to ignore him and not let him ruin the fun, as hard as that is.

Nini, game day is a big deal around here, but the streets are noisy. Everyone know how obnoxious Eagles fans are! By the way, my granddaughter was given a Patriots cheerleader outfit by her Gramps. Her mommy (my daughter) says she'll never wear it -- hee hee!

Happy Day!

You are so right! I had not looked at it from the perspective you just gave me: by not enjoying football because of one very bad person I am giving that very bad person a whole lot of power, aren't I?

Cindy: I don't like what Michael Vick diid to dogs at all. I refuse to let him take away the love of football from me. Someone told me that he has changed. I hope so. Having said that, I must also say that when they put him in as QB I turn away. Hugs.

I am a very sad Steeler fan - not feeling' the love for the team. I get the business and logical decision of needing an experienced backup quarterback and there are VERY few of them, but Michael Vick is a vile excuse of a human being and I really don't think I can support a team that would hire him. When you look at the details of how he killed and tortured dogs, knowing he lied and lied about his involvement in their torture and killings until he failed a polygraph and only then fessed up....this all speaks to his true heart and the language is disgusting. I know people say "he paid his dues" - no he did not. People who slowly and viciously torture and kill (by hanging) innocent animals and then lie about it should not be paid millions and millions of dollars for anything they do.

I know lots of Steeler fans say "If you bail on the team because of this then you aren't a real Steelers fan" - then I guess I am not a real Steelers fan.

It is going to be a very different season for me

Hi Nini! I am here to tell you that there are Steeler fans everywhere! We have been to the Southwest on vacation many times and last year, the tour guide on horseback in remote Canyon de Chelly, which is located within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation, was wearing a Steeler jersey. This year, a different tour guide in even more remote Monument Valley, Utah was also wearing a Steeler jersey.

I live near Jacksonville, FL and the only time the Jaguars sell out is when they play the Steelers at home.

PS. Wasn't it awesome to see The Bus get his gold jacket this year? Woo hoo!

So... Girls... Just wondering... When it's game time where you live, are the streets deserted? Around here, no matter where you drive, it's like a virtual ghost town. Nobody's on the road: everyone's at home watching the game! Every house has some sort of Steeler decor, EVERYONE is wearing Steeler colors... If you're not, you're stared down until you're running for your life... I've yet to see anything like a Steelers fan or Steelers Country, but I know that we're not the only crazy fans in the world... What's it like where you are??? Hugs - Nini
