Girls, what do you listen to while you are sewing or knitting or crafting?

I love to turn on Prairie Home Companion while I am busy in my craft room - he usually has a mix of folk/ jazz/ bluegrass/ hymns that appeals to me, and sometimes after PHC is over I listen to baroque/classical music - I find myself stitching in time to the music (or trying, anyway). I have an older computer down there and I play the old shows from his web site...

I bought some CD's of "music to weave by" but it doesn't really work for me while I am knitting.... And I find that I can't really watch TV while working, I need to keep my eyes on my work.

Any of you have favorite artists that seem to make the crafting go better?

My music taste can vary wildly with my mood or what I am doing. I like anything from oldies to a CD I bought called "African Groove" (very feel-good). But this summer I had a wonderful, new customer who spends his summer here on the westcoast. He is a composer and musician. I'm not entirely sure how to explain his music genre (new age??), but you can sample his music... http://www.aeoliah.com . It's called "Music for Healthy Living" and is especially wonderful after a hectic day.

I love to work very late at night or even into the early morning hours when the house is quiet & still. Music never even occurred to me, which is funny, because I almost always have something playing any other time. I listen to mostly rock, and loud...so maybe not the most conducive to sewing.

I will sing at the top of my lungs, and I will dance even if I'm the only one...

The Be Good Tanyas have been quite inspirational for me in the sewing room. Most anything of the singer/songwriter genre...storytellers who happen to play a little music.

I also love NPR. Podcasting my favorite NPR shows and listening to them at my convenience has been helpful too.

Sherry, I'm kinda like you~for sewing(or more stationary things) I like the smoother stuff like Loreena McKennitt, but if I'm baking or cleaning hair bands of the 80's is fun~I just turn on Sirius TV on DISH network and pick a genre.
Metallica/classic Rock when I'm driving. LOL

This is neat! I thought I was strange myself for having different music for different things! I really love my Ipod but I must have one of the most varied music on it. When I am sewing (new to that) I love to listen to Celtic music. When I'm cooking, I usually listen to rock and dance. The beat helps turns chopping stuff up and bopping around the kitchen into aerobic exercise! It cracks the girls up!

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

I wanted to bump this subject up because it is so interesting to me. I love all sorts of music, so what I listen to while crafting varies greatly...could be classical, or some old bluegrass gospel, a little Bing Crosby or Benny Goodman to get the fingers flying, or I can feed the guilty pleasure and listen to my "totally 80's" cd!

So ladies what do you listen to whilst you are being crafty??

This thread is cracking me up! Who would have thought...a bunch of farmgirls listening to music on the web?!?! How wonderful is all of this. I love pandora as well. I found it through another blog that I read. I am a huge fan of Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, Macy Grey, Gypsy Kings (latin), Ben Folds, Pasty Cline and lots and lots more...I have a very eclectic taste as well.

Where have I been? I *love* Pandora - thank you for the recommendation!

Oh, and while I'm puttering around the house/with my projects, I usually plug in my iPod to some old computer speakers and hit "shuffle" so there's no telling what will come up - usually it's anything from Bluegrass to Punk :-)

Margie...I LOVE EDDIE ARNOLD!!!! Cool, clear water.......water! If I close my eyes, I can hear him yodleing! I am also crazy about 40's big band sound and 50's tropical/Hawaiian music: such as: Iz...love his version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and my all time chill producing: Martin Denny here is an amazon link if you would like to hear short samples of his music. (click on Quiet Village)

http://www.amazon.com/Exciting-Sounds-Martin-Denny-Exotica/dp/B000000IAP/sr=8-1/qid=1172032724/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-8165206-4742859?ie=UTF8&s=music

If the link doesn't work, just go to amazon and type in Martin Denny and click on his Exotica Album. Now I am showing my age. My parents listened to this type of music when I was growing up.

Love this thread!

Ya'll are welcome! My husband the web guru, introduced me to Pandora. I LOVE IT. You farmgirls are right! I've discovered sooooo much wonderful world wide music on Pandora. I even set up a Christmas station during the Christmas season...great stuff there too. I ended up guiding it into a funky jazzy Christmas. I love native American flute music to write to. I wrote my first novel to James Taylor and Robert Mirabal. I am writing alot to Enya and music like hers at the moment.

So, so glad that you are all enjoying Pandora...great and free service!! Oh, and Libbie, I'll have to start a Latin station to listen to. I love classical Latino, especially guitar.

Georgeann- Thank you so much for mentioning Pandora. We have all been having great fun with it and I am loving my "stations".
I set up three (working/stitching music - Shawn Colvin, Marc Cohn, JT, etc), quiet/contemplative- Will Ackerman, George Winston, Liz Story, classical etc) and (fun & funky- which could be anything that makes me feel good from James Brown, Aretha, Santana, Grateful Dead... I am an eclectic musicoligist! I like most music except screaming opera and twangy nasal country from the old days!
I also will live stream WXPN or play World Cafe performances I've missed. This station is alot like Pandora, it plays a wide range of artists you won't hear on other stations. I first heard Lyle Lovett, Patty Griffin, Rosie Thomas, David Gray on WXPN before anyone knew who they were. Lots of fun for a girl who LOVES music as much as I do! Thanks again!

Kate- I first heard the Be Good Tanyas on Prarie Home!
Anybody listen to Mountain Stage on Saturday nights?
with a happy heart

Georgann- Thank you for posting the pandora site! Today was Project Tuesday, and Cilla and I listened to some lovely music while making sweater purses! (We are totally hooked on making them- I cannot pass a Goodwill anymore!) :) I like that you can choose what you like and don't like. Very nice feature.

I haven't heard of them, Libbie, THe Be Good Tanyas, but I do love Neil Young. I will check them out next time I am on amazon.com.

That pandora station is pretty cool.

I also am thrilled to find Pandora. That is the kind of music I mainly listen to, soft popular, new age, etc., when I'm doing handwork.
BUT I gotta tell ya, when it comes to scrubbing potties and doing LOT of hard, icky house chores, AC/DC can't be beat. lol

I really am liking "Hello Love" by the Be Good Tanyas lately - especially their cover of Neil Young's "For the Turnstiles." It's so fun to hear what you all are listening to!...Oh - and I also seem to spend an inordinate amount of time with Fisher-Price's "Songs from the Farm" on...
