Girls, what do you listen to while you are sewing or knitting or crafting?
I love to turn on Prairie Home Companion while I am busy in my craft room - he usually has a mix of folk/ jazz/ bluegrass/ hymns that appeals to me, and sometimes after PHC is over I listen to baroque/classical music - I find myself stitching in time to the music (or trying, anyway). I have an older computer down there and I play the old shows from his web site...
I bought some CD's of "music to weave by" but it doesn't really work for me while I am knitting.... And I find that I can't really watch TV while working, I need to keep my eyes on my work.
Any of you have favorite artists that seem to make the crafting go better?

I listen to classical music a lot when I am sewing. NPR has good songs during the day and on Sundays. On Saturday night, I listen to Prairie Home Companion just like Brenda. They have a series called Echoes on after that and sometimes that it fun to work to as well. (Sometimes the stuff on that program just seems like disconnected noise to me though!!)
Eva Cassidy is a great singer to listen to while sewing as well. I guess it depends on the day and season, but generally, I like soothing music to work to. I teach all week and enjoy the quiet times sewing when I can.
Believe it or not, sometimes religious hymns inspire the most mellow, thoughtful sewing too. |

Susan, I just listened to Nickel Creek. Thanks for sharing them! I will have to get a copy of the CD. I get the best music, books and recipes from you girls. I have yet to be disappointed in a recommendation of any kind. |

I'm all over the MPR/NPR thing with Tasha, but also just put the iPod on a "folk genre" shuffle a lot lately and leave it all day. Everything from Woodie Guthrie to Indigo Girls to bluegrass to Peter Ostroushko to Gordon Lightfoot to Norah Jones, etc. etc. etc. We use an iTrip contraption to have the iPod transmit directly to my kitchen radio/CD player speakers. Kate - we've completely gotten rid of all of the "black boxes" (TV, speakers, CD player, DVD player, receiver) in the living room and are thinking about adding another bookshelf in their place. Invigorating to say the least!
My iPod has about 12g of music from the last fifteen years stored on it now...awesome little tool. Sometimes I just do a general shuffle and see what's next!
Can't live without my music...
Catherine :)

Almost anything country ( I don't like the pop side of things) I especially love Allison Krauss or any blue grass, Pat Green when I need a kick in the pants, George Strait for just some good music. Nickel Creek is awesome too. I am a true blue country fan so sometimes I kick back and listen to classics like Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou Harris, Kenny Rogers,etc...you get the idea. Sometimes I do throw in James Taylor and Carol King with a dash of light classical music. |

I think Norah Jones is great to crochet to. The rhythm of both just flow together very nicely. |

Thanks for the pandora recommendation Aunt George! Way Cool! I'm finding "my music".... those tunes that aren't played much anymore. I'd tell you what they are, but that'd really age me! haha.

LOL! I'm not particularly musical but when I do put on some music to knit or crochet to, it's usually wild rock music by Dilana (of Rockstar reality show fame) or maybe something by the B52s or the Clash. Something with a wild beat to it...

I love my ipod too. I've got the heavy stuff for working out and lighter fun stuff for sewing/crafting! I like classical or oldies when I am sewing. (My oldies range from the 1940's to the 1960's). I can have a favorite movie going when I am working b/c if it's a favorite (John Wayne, Carey Grant,Jimmy Stewart...) I can listen and now what's going on! Last week I even put on White Christmas! It just get's me sewing!

I just love to listen to books on tape/CD while I'm crafting, except for when I'm using the sewing machine - drowns out part of the story. But great for knitting, cutting patterns, etc. I get them from the local library; they even have old radio shows on CD now which is fun.
For music, I like Madeline Peyroux, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf - blues and torch singers mainly. & I'm also with the NPR crowd, a cup of coffee and Weekend Edition on the radio is a great way to spend a crafty morning hour on a Saturday.

Oh, Georgeann, thanks so much for Pandora - I can see that I will have a new toy to play with! And Catherine, I am going to have to find out more about this iPod stuff. Katrina, I've heard the name Norah Jones but not all that familiar with her work... Probably I have heard it on the radio a million times but never associated the name with the music - I will have to call her up on Pandora and see what kind of music! And Catscharm - thanks for the Allison Krauss recommendation! And everyone else, too... Wow you guys are a fountain of inspiration!

I really am liking "Hello Love" by the Be Good Tanyas lately - especially their cover of Neil Young's "For the Turnstiles." It's so fun to hear what you all are listening to!...Oh - and I also seem to spend an inordinate amount of time with Fisher-Price's "Songs from the Farm" on...

I also am thrilled to find Pandora. That is the kind of music I mainly listen to, soft popular, new age, etc., when I'm doing handwork. BUT I gotta tell ya, when it comes to scrubbing potties and doing LOT of hard, icky house chores, AC/DC can't be beat. lol

Georgann- Thank you for posting the pandora site! Today was Project Tuesday, and Cilla and I listened to some lovely music while making sweater purses! (We are totally hooked on making them- I cannot pass a Goodwill anymore!) :) I like that you can choose what you like and don't like. Very nice feature.

Georgeann- Thank you so much for mentioning Pandora. We have all been having great fun with it and I am loving my "stations". I set up three (working/stitching music - Shawn Colvin, Marc Cohn, JT, etc), quiet/contemplative- Will Ackerman, George Winston, Liz Story, classical etc) and (fun & funky- which could be anything that makes me feel good from James Brown, Aretha, Santana, Grateful Dead... I am an eclectic musicoligist! I like most music except screaming opera and twangy nasal country from the old days! I also will live stream WXPN or play World Cafe performances I've missed. This station is alot like Pandora, it plays a wide range of artists you won't hear on other stations. I first heard Lyle Lovett, Patty Griffin, Rosie Thomas, David Gray on WXPN before anyone knew who they were. Lots of fun for a girl who LOVES music as much as I do! Thanks again!
Kate- I first heard the Be Good Tanyas on Prarie Home! Anybody listen to Mountain Stage on Saturday nights? with a happy heart |

Ya'll are welcome! My husband the web guru, introduced me to Pandora. I LOVE IT. You farmgirls are right! I've discovered sooooo much wonderful world wide music on Pandora. I even set up a Christmas station during the Christmas season...great stuff there too. I ended up guiding it into a funky jazzy Christmas. I love native American flute music to write to. I wrote my first novel to James Taylor and Robert Mirabal. I am writing alot to Enya and music like hers at the moment.
So, so glad that you are all enjoying Pandora...great and free service!! Oh, and Libbie, I'll have to start a Latin station to listen to. I love classical Latino, especially guitar. Georgann

I have had a couple days off, so I've had some extra crafty time. I really paid attention to what I listen to while sewing! I'm just downright wierd I guess, here are my top played on my IPod Allmann bros Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman Mountain Heir (look them up if u like southern gospel) Johnny Horton! Vivaldi The Newsboys Third Day
It's a wonder I can sew a straight line! hehe

Where have I been? I *love* Pandora - thank you for the recommendation!
Oh, and while I'm puttering around the house/with my projects, I usually plug in my iPod to some old computer speakers and hit "shuffle" so there's no telling what will come up - usually it's anything from Bluegrass to Punk :-) |
