I have discovered a love of sock darning. Just wanted to share because it is so weird. This week I have darned three pair. Last week I darned four of mine and one of RObs. Mine were re-enforcement Rob's was a mend.

My mother passed away when I was pregnant at 23, I'll never forget her perched with an old light bulb and socks darning away. When did we start to throw away everything? She knew the hard earned value of her paycheck. She was a treasure my mother....

I find I get an odd enjoyment when I hang our laundry out to dry... I hated doing this as a kid..but now it's saved us a bundle on our electric bill. Also I feel peaceful when I scrub the nasty green stuff out of my horse Lucy's water buckets. The thing that makes both these things so peaceful for me is that the kids are usually hiding so they won't be involved...and it's outside...I hear the hawks or the cows...and I can't hear the tv. I'm thinking of moving out there! :)

Back to Darning.... I don't darn but remember my grandma and great grandma darning socks. They used darning floss thread and a shot glass. They pulled the hole over the open end then wove the thread to make the patch. I was in college before I knew what the shot glass was really used for! My FIL used to darn over a fresh egg. Only once do I remember the egg breaking. I've sewen for years but always thought it would be easier over the glass. I only tried it a few times. Now I like to sew ,but I do not like to darn. I just watch for socks on sale and then when they wear out I use them to dust,polish shoes or as rags.

After just scrubbing the cats' litter box, I will put that task into the 'I DO MIND DOING THIS' category! Am enjoying hanging up jeans on the line this morning as the migrating birds are all atwitter in the trees. |

I don't mind cleaning bathrooms so much EXCEPT, I WILL NOT clean Rob's bathroom in the basement 1)he is really messy in the bathroom 2)he is a boy and they are icky 3) there are spiders down there.

I bought a darning egg at a local antiques store...I love it. I will keep my eyes open for one for you.
I love certain household chores too. I think it is the feeling of accomplishment, or maybe the zenlike peace that comes from a repetative task, like knitting, or hanging out laundry...either way, I understand your love for it.
Now, if I could learn to love scrubbing the bathrooms....EEWW

I love the original Stepford Wives movie and have it on DVD! I don't think any of us are strange for enjoying working in our homes to make them nice. It's called appreciation and contentment. Susan |

I agree with both of you ladies, whole heartedly!!
My husband will try and complain on the nights there is no dinner ready but I put HIM in HIS place!
IF there is any of my "chores" that are not completed, he well knows it's for a darn good reason.
Usually it's because I was up all night with the baby, I myself was sick AND I didn't get any sleep during the day.
He's learned not to complain often about what it is I *don't* do by being not so kindly reminded of the things I *do* do even when I'm not feeling well.

Well said! One of the down falls of our society is the letting go of traditional roles...IMO. There are certain things I WANT to do, because I am the Mama, and this is how I care for my family.

It is the same here in our house Tasha. I try to have a decent, healthy meal each night because I feel it's my duty to do so when dh has been at work all day and I have been home. Which isn't to say running a farm on my own is not work too and there have been nights when dinner isn't ready until late. We do have a mutual respect for what we each do every day however.
I believe (okay, maybe I better duck)..that overall, traditional roles are what help folks stay united as a family and MY role is to care for my home and family. Which isn't to say that dh hasn't on occasion made dinner while I mowed a field...frankly I like my cooking better..haha.
The feeling I've gotten in all of the forums here is that farmgirls take pride in doing a job well, being it caring for children, cooking, laundry, raising livestock or growing a garden... and we love our roles.
There are days when my life is busy, frustrating, physically grueling and dirty...balanced with those that are relaxing, fulfilling and rewarding. I feel so very blessed and wouldn't change a thing.

Stepford without the subserviance, however....at least for me. Rob knows he can't tell me what to do and when to do it....I just don't operate that way. He does his jobs and I do mine, and when I cater to him I do it because it is what I want to do, not what he wants me to do...plus, he can't clean. :)

Moe - Yes, I saw the original Stepford Wives and I have to admit I thought their life was just what I would want, except I have always wanted to be more rural. I have not thought of that in years! :)

Yes, as Katie-ell said, it's a darning egg. My mom's got one that she has promised to give me when she quits darning. I am tempted to offer to do all her darning along with mine! If you ever get one again in your consignment - give me a holler! I would love one of my own and would be happy to buy it!

I love being home, I have friends that just don't get it. I show them something I made or the way I changed something around, or what I got at a garage sale or thrift shop, they look at me like my lights aren't on. I have always loved playing house.

I know what you mean! I so enjoy my weekends at home since I am employed full time in an office during the week.I love to "nest".
Not to be coy, but did anybody see the original Stepford Wives movie? Not the remake with Nicole Kidman, but the original with Susan St James? I was preteen then and I envied those women and their domesticity....strange

I hand weave little cotton patches so when my kids get a whole intheir clothes I already have a stack of these little patches already made. Funny since most people don't make patches anymore People always think these patches purposley on the clothes like I bought them that way way to funny. People think they are cute and trendy I think they are functional and cute.

I have always loved doing laundry for my family.
And Libbe that's not a lightbulb...in the primitive world that's called a "make-do". Makin' do with what you have! :)

What lucky friends and families you all must have to benefit from you doing what you love to do! It IS strange what can give a farmgirl some satisfaction and pleasure, isn't it? I get it from hanging clothes out on the line and also from ironing - there's something wonderful to me about transforming a wrinkled piece of fabric into a crisp shirt or skirt or whatever...
As for darning socks, I've always just used a lightbulb --- and really wanted a darning "thing" - what are they actually called?

I get a lot of satisfaction from household chores, too. I love straightening the house and sweeping the porch and cooking and folding clothes. Washing windows and changing the sheets.....even opening the curtains in the morning. Sometimes I walk through the house and just luxuriate in the feeling that being home gives me. And to be in the garden early in the morning...it is so quiet, and I love the breeze and cutting back things, and tying up plants. Stuffing diapers....that I never did, but I love to fold my grandaughter's burp cloths, which are really cloth diapers. And holding the babies....now there is real love for domesticity!

Kristina, I get that too....I love washing and folding Z's dipes. I get a strange satisfaction out of most of my chores around the house...

Strangely, I find stuffing diapers (I use pocket dipes) very relaxing.
Maybe there is something so innate about a mother assuring her baby's comfort that makes it feel so good to do. I know that making sure I do it meticulously insures her comfort.
