I just finished my first pot holder (crocheted), and it measures about 11 inches. It's huge? I have crocheted sets that my grandmother made, that are regular sized (about 7-8 inch square). Are most patterns this generous, and should I just be making the patterns smaller? The one I made does not require a ring for hanging either. It's nice because you don't have to reach for 2 hot pads, but just wondered if people will like these for next Christmas?

I used the same hook, but instead of stitching 41 I did about 24 and the hot pads measured about 7 x 7 inches. I added a hook too. They turned out nice. I may make each family a set, including the very large one. It's pretty nice for a large skillet or pan.

Nice Kristina. I agree with Melody. Try a smaller hook.

Hi Kristina.
This could also be due to the tension you apply when crocheting or the size of your hook. I tend to be a "tight" crocheter. My stuff is usually smaller than the pattern, so I practice "trying" to lighten up, but I also use a bigger hook. You may find you need to use a smaller hook if you are a loose crocheter. (pardon the pun). I am in the process of teaching myself and I pick a lot of brains when I find out some one knows crochet. I also love books, and I have purchased several crochet books to help myself. Good luck.

The hot pad required 41 stitches and I used a 4.25 hook. It's huge, but nice too. Here's a photo of the hot pad and dish cloth (found the pattern on sugar n' cream's site.

Maybe use a different gauge yarn? And no not all of them are that big, try another pattern :)
