Has anyone else heard of Warm up America? They take donations of 7' by 9' knitted or crocheted squares, stitch them together, and give them to social services to hand out to people in need. At my local Michael's, they take donations starting in late fall. This year, I really want to send in some squares. I have wanted to in the past, but haven't ever had the motivation. Does anyone else do this? I was thinking that if us knitters and crocheters kept track of how many we make and turn in, I could calculate how many blankets that would make. We could set a goal of blank amount of blankets. Anyone who wants to can participate!

It's almost MAY..... just hours away..... and thought it would be perfectly wonderful...... in honor of MOMS around the world..... to add a special project that's filled with love because that's what being a Mom means to me and the love I receive from my mother.

So I have launched the new forum " KNIT 1 BLESS 2" right here in the STITCHING and CRAFTING ROOM for any of my Farmgirl Sisters who love stitching with love for a special cause.

I'm extra excited about "KNIT 1 BLESS 2" because it is being sponsored by that loved author, Debbie Macomber. Debbie, herself,is an avid knitter in her own right, and has authored many wonderful knitting books along with her own romance series that readers love.

I figured Debbie has given us sooooooooo much through the years that I could step up and share this wonderful project with our own Farmgirls here to enjoy along with me.

Come on over and visit the "KNIT 1 BLESS 2" Forum here. The deadline that Debbie has set is May 31st to receive any handmade items that are crocheted or knitted.

Last year (2010) Debbie received 2000 handmade items from her readers for the 3 charities that she selected as the recipients. This year (2011) Debbie is back again, promoting her new book, and ready to come to the aid of her favorite charirites with the hope of reaching her goal of 2500.

So let's see if we can help Debbie..... FARMGIRL STYLE!!

I guess you will have to contact Theresa B. and ask about the starting date for another project that she may have in mind and what that might be after all. That would be the best way to get the info.

Rebecca,

Thanks for the lovely message!

I think there is always something we can do to make the world a little more caring and brighter. I know sometimes we can think of "charity" as something that doesn't pay off and just doesn't yield any profit.

But I would disagree whole-heartedly. The payoff is big time and it isn't in dollars and cents. It's the warm feeling that comes right back to you like a wave when you make lovely creations from your heart for a cause of your choice. Just think of the wave upon the shore..... it rolls in on the beach and then returns right back to the sea.

I know when I walk in to the Cancer Center with bags of hats that I'm delivering, the faces of the staff light up with million dollar smiles and I feel so happy the rest of the day and every time I think back on those smiles. The profit is priceless!

I deliver them in person because then I know for certain that they are really getting there. I've had 2 separate experiences with 2 yarn stores where the lovely creations that people made just sat there. So now I make my own deliveries and my own mailings when I need to mail. It's a good feeling knitting and crocheting for a more loving world. I figure we can all enjoy more love in our wonderful world.

Hi ladies! You are all such great inspirations, and like Teresita said, next time Theresa starts up a Farmgirl Philanthropy, participate! We made over 200 caps, and with more of you participating, the more we can make!

Thank you Teresita. Yes, I did read about the group in your posting and I wondered if there was something I could do to help. I knit for my local knit shop, hats, and for those I hear of in need of care and comfort, but it is always nice to hear of other ways to help. Many thanks.

Hi Rebecca,

All you have to do is look in this "STITCHING & Craft ROOM" headline and go page by page until you find it. You don't have far to go to find it. I am guessing that you are referring to my post.

Where do I look to find information on the Farmgirl Philanthropy group hosted by Theresa that you speak of? Could someone help me please?

It's March and these days are perfect for marching into "SPRINGTIME FASHION CHEMO CAPS" because it's no fair letting Cancer steal away the beauty of the spring season by having to go for treatments like radiation and chemotherapy and surgery.

So here's a peek at a few of the Fashion Flair Chemo Caps that I'll be taking over today to the Cancer Clinic in my community. Instead of going to a large hospital, I selected to return to this particular clinic because it's a smaller clinic and doesn't get a lot of donations and my hubby, now a Cancer Survivor, was a patient here himself in 2008.

Let me assure everyone who is wondering about CHEMO CAPS..... they do make a big difference in the lives of Cancer patients. THe Coordinator of the Cancer Clinic where I take my hats calls me now when they are running low and says that the hats really brighten the hearts. When the person comes back for treatment, they are wearing their new hat and are also color-coordinating their wardrobe to match their hat!!

Yes, I have seen the website and for other chapters as well across the country. We have tee-shirts with our chapter's name inscribed. I have actually contacted other chapters as well. I preferred the old logo we had because it was representative of all chapters across the country.

I am not that connected to making blankets as they are time consuming for me of time I never seem to have enough of and also use up a considerable amount of yarn to complete. Thus my total for a year stays at the minimum to keep me on the active list of members.

Nice to meet you, Teresita,

Yes, we are also called Blanketeers and we receive a Project Linus Badge to signify our members. If I'm not too busy making rugs, I can crochet 3-4 blankets a month. I'm also going to sew a few baby quilts soon. Have you seen the group website: www.projectlinus.org
Having fun,
Petra

I am also a "blanketeer" (that's what we are called) for my local "Project Linus" since the fall of 2008. You can knit, crochet or quilt your blanket. You can select what size to make your blanket too. I prefer crocheting or knitting my blankets which I usually make for babies and toddlers. I donate about 4-5 a year to this group.

In my local chapter, we are asked to make at least 2 blankets a year to stay as an active member of this non-profit charity. But our local chapter doesn't have any meetings. Our coordinator just blasts out emails. That's pretty much the only communication we get for the most part. Our coordinator and co-coordinator are pretty active in seeing that the blankets get distributed though we don't do any of the personal deliveries. We just get a postcard telling us the new home of our blankets.

Hello all,
Here in Las Cruces, NM we meet every 3rd Wednesday to create and then deliver handmade Blankets and Quilts to Children for PROJECT LINUS. I've been with the group for almost 2 years now, and really enjoy the get together' s. We have more than 100 members creating these beautiful blankets. I also like the idea of taking the blankets directly to local hospitals and first responders, like fire departments, shelters .... This way we know the blankets will arrive where they're supposed to. The blankets are for children from newborns to 18 years of age. Check if you have a local Chapter of PROJECT LINUS if you are looking for a worthy cause.

It's almost VALENTINE'S DAY with candies, kisses, balloons, hugs, and lots of ways to say "I LOVE YOU!"

So I'll be off this afternoon to deliver a VALENTINE'S DAY BUNCH OF LOVE ( 20 Fashion Flair Chemo Caps ) to my local Cancer Center in my community.

Here's a peek at a few of the Chemo Caps that I'll be taking over this afternoon....

I'm also taking a separate bag loaded up with 12 Fashion Flair chemo caps for the "LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER PROGRAM" that is sponspored by the American Cancer Society.

I figure it's just not right for CANCER to rob us of the joy and love of Valentine's Day. So this is my way to put love right back into VALENTINE'S DAY for Cancer Patients undergoing chemotherapy and give a kick to Cancer for being a thief!

If any of my Farmgirl Sisters are looking for a cool and cozy place to meet up and share our knitting and crocheting skills, we are very lucky here at our FARMGIRL CONNECTION to have our very own Farmgirl Philanthropy hosted by Theresa.

We've been having a fine time making over 250+ "CAPS for GOOD" which will soon be mailed off before the deadline on the February 28th.

Later in March we'll add a new project to keep us stitching away with love. As always we'd love welcoming more Farmgirl Sisters on our Special Projects. It's really great getting together with each other!

Just wondering what 2011 knitting and crocheting projects for charity our Farmgirl Sisters here are working on .......

We are certainly speeding along already in February which is a great month for stitching with love.

It's always fun hearing what others have on their knitting needles and crochet hooks.

January and February can be quite cold outside but be very warm inside when knitting and crocheting for special projects that happen this time of the year.

One of these WINTER projects that is especially wonderful and delightful is making caps for "CAPS FOR GOOD." We are lucky here at our FARMGIRL CONNECTION to have our very own "Farmgirl Philanthropy-Caps for Good" group right here. We have made over 200 caps which are for babies in Africa, Asia, and South America who desperately do need these caps for survival.

The caps are so easy to make and it seems like the more you knit and crochet these caps..... the warmer you feel in your heart! These little hearts are small but GIANT in love and warmth for these babies.

Come on over and visit our group and let's make some more caps with love together!

Farmgirl Philanthropy did a 100% Farmgirl made blanket for Warm Up America a few seasons ago! It turned out SO beautiful. Wonder if that's in the archives somewhere? I loved stitching together all those squares made by Farmgirl hands!

In case you are wondering, there are many chapters of SFTH across the country. When you can't find a local chapter, you can always start your own up too. I love the newsletter too that is now quarterly called "The Stitches Gazette" that is available.

If you go to the website (see above for the link) you will find lots of free patterns and find out more about this special charity that may be of interest to you, especially if you'd like to knit and crochet and loom-knit for the babies.

Happy stitching!
