Hello gal friends!
I've renewed an interest that I've had in re-creating old fashioned aprons, like the full length styles that were worn in the 1930-1940's. I've found an authentic pattern (you know those totally unmarked tissue paper ones), and have sewn up a few of them. They are actually pretty cute!

My question is this: Since aprons have sort of been out of fashion for a few decades, what do you think the chances are of re-establishing this custom for women? I'm not thinking about wearing them continually throughout the day as our fore-mothers did, but how about using an apron to bake cookies, or one of Mary Jane's bakeovers? Just thought I'd get a concensus from y'all before I go and sew up a bunch more based on the idea of marketing them, rather than just for my personal pleasure to give to friends and relatives. Thank you for your input! Clare

It looks like things have been pretty quiet here over the holiday season. I just wanted to let everyone know about a few changes that we have made at amelia's aprons.

First of all we have transfered the whole web site into a new store module so if you have any pages on the site saved to your favorites then you probably need to update your links. The home page of course is still the same.

Because of the store change we are offering a 10% discount on everything until Jan 31st. enter the coupon code "NEW STORE" in the shopping cart upon check out to receive this savings. We also have a couple new Valentine aprons and several new styles. If you haven't checked us out in a while I encourage you to come and take a look at all the changes.

Oh and we have a new pattern too.

Blessings to everyone. I hope you all had a blessed and restful holiday season.

Julie,
there is a picture of the front :)I did not realize that both my links went to the same picture. oops. Thank you for pointing that out. It is fixed now so you can see it.

Tasha, I do hope to create a pattern for the regency apron sometime in the not too distant future. I just this week sold the last of my soft yellow ones. But, I do have a great new fabric that is soft pink sheer crinkle cotton (like the yellow)that has a slightly darker pink strip in it. I have not yet created an apron with this fabric but I have pictured the fabric and made it available. I will try and get a sample apronout on the web next week. Thanks for linking to them.

Nancy and Gloria, thanks for the encouragement! That apron was too small for me when I made it so I saved it all this time to show it in the fair, because I felt I did a really good job of finishing it. Much better than I usually do! Some people think that machine knitting is easy, the machine does all the work, but my understanding is that the finishing is what makes or breaks a knitted garment, and all the finishing is by hand, even with a knitting machine.

Nancy, you have a real talent for encouraging other people! I have noticed this over the last few months! So, even if you don't sew, you are helping them!

Gloria, congratulations on your quilt! That is quite an honor! I don't even enter the STATE fair because of the competition, but an INTERNATIONAL showing! WoW!

Brenda, so sorry for the 2nd place ribbon, but wow! Still how wonderful! I am very proud for you! We are all just a bunch of apron kinda girls! So we are partial! Keep up the good work! You will get that blue ribbon.

I had a quilt that was choosen to be in the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2004, just on show, didn't get a ribbon or anything. But I was so proud just to have it hanging in there!

Your work is beautiful!

we'll chat soon!

Nice apron, all your aprons were so cute, what were they thinking??? second prize, were they paying attention to what they were doing? next time make something in BRIGHT red, maybe that will wake them up. Wish I could make aprons like so many of our girls here, those that can sew are very lucky, someone better move in near me real soon and pass on some of this talent.

Here is a link to a photo of my machine-knit apron that won 2nd place at our local county fair. I was SO disappointed, I just knew it was a blue-ribbon winner!
the winner was a flat child's apron with machine-applique on the front.

Thanks for the feed back ladies. My mom said that she made aprons in home ec class too, I am excited that it is that old. It doesn't really show in the picture much but 2 inches on top and bottom sides of the flowers are hand stitched little x's. I know they used gingham a lot in teaching because it is easy to follow your lines and such.

Nancy it is listed on my blog page. We have another one that we found that is hand tatted. I will post pic's of it soon.

I had a red one too..passed it on to a friend years ago who loved it. It was made by my Aunt and she said she made it in Home ec too..must have been a country wide thing!! haha
I saw a yellow one once too. I wish I had another one now, but the friend loved it so that I couldn't keep that one!

I have two of these red checked aprons. I think, if I remember correctly, that most of them were Home Economic projects done at high schools in the 1950's and 60's. I know I made one in junior high, and it was so similar to this. My sister made one too, and they were always gingham checked in red or orange or yellow.

Peace

lORRIE,
How pretty, love red, didn't see it on your site, where is it?

We recently found this lovely red gingham apron in an antique store. I am not sure how old it is, clearly vintage, and it would be great for a family picnic. The apron is hand stitched and hand embroidered with checks and flowers across the pocket and bottom. With a pocket on the left side it would be very convenient to use this apron in cleaning and picking up toys while taking care of little children.

My daughter posted this on our blog today, but I wanted to share it with all of you here.

I am still marveling at the total hand stitching used on this apron.
I haven't been here much lately but I am still enjoying all the post from everyone about thier aprons. I hope you enjoy this pic.

Tasha, welcome!! Isn't this group great? I saw your posting about your clothesline, sounds very cool! If I had 2 trees close enough to the house I would do that too. I also have a thing about aprons, didn't have any but I've wanted to make at least one for a long time. I found this pattern at www.thecalicocat.com for this 1940 apron and I cut it out last night and sewed it up today. I still have to put the bias tape on which I've never done before but the apron turned out cute so far! I had this material for quite awhile that has roosters on it so I used that. I had such fun making the apron that I cut out 2 more today, this time using material that has kind of a country theme with roosters and pumpkins, etc on it. When I get one completely done I'll post a picture. My husband is only around on weekends and tomorrow is our 17th anniversary so I may not get to finish it till early next week.

Hey...
I should probably post an intro huh? THis group is so amazing! girls like me!!! WOOT!

ANyway, I have an obsession with aprons. I keep them everywhere, I have my favorites and part of my collection hangs on a wall in my kitchen. I just started making this apron:

http://www.sensibility.com/pattern/apronpatterncover.jpg

I saw it on a site that sells aprons and since I sew, I though, heck, I can make that for myself instead of spending the 35 they want for them sewing it. I just cut it and pinned my darts and have had to stop...busy busy life....you know the story....but I can't wait for it to be done. It's my goal this weekend on top of everything else.

My blog is on Myspace but I have a few entries on aprons in it:

http://blog.myspace.com/gaiasrose

Just wanted to share. I have enjoyed reading this thread and seeing the aprons you all wear (in the sewing forum)....I am really excited about this group!!

Thanks!
Blessings,
Tasha

i love aprons too.
since i was the son my dad never had, hehehehe, and he was a carpenter, i grew up wearing nail aprons. now i make my own and use vintage or beautiful fabric to make them so they look more "girly". i call them "domestic goddess aprons."

they arent really the kind you wear in the kitchen, but i cant do a project now on the farm without my apron on, its like having an extra set of pockets.
i have made them to sell and also give them to friends for presents.
in the kitchen i really love the full aprons that kind of fit like a smock and cross over in the back.

I went to an auction today and got the best thing for free!! I was bidding on a box of books that contined many cookbooks as well as a book from the fifties that was full of vintage apron patterns!! I tried to bid on the whole box but there was a woman who realy wanted the cookbooks. I approached her afterwards and asked how much she wanted for the book and he gave it to me!! I have been pouring through it tryin to decide what i want to make first. So many patterns so little time!! I will surely post pictures as sooon as I make one.
