Due to dh's extended unemployment, I've tried to be as creative and frugal as possible this Christmas. For example, I got my youngest son a pack of 8 different boxes of yummy hot chocolate flavors, a mug, and a fleece blanket. I was stumped by youngest daughter, and was thumbing through some books for ideas. I looked in the Stiching Book and noticed the crocheted hexagon scarf pattern. I had started one for myself with size 20 thread and only got 1/2 way thorugh when my business took off, so it's unfinished (34 hexagons!) But, I thought, what if I made it with slightly bigger thread, less hexagons, - it might be doable for Christmas for dd. I went to our little local variety store and they had size 10 thread for $1.99 a ball, so I bought the only two they had in the color I chose. Came home and started fiddling with the pattern and decided one row of the larger hexagons would make a nice scarf. I have it about 2/3 done and I will definately post a picture when it's finished - maybe later today. I made it in "spruce" which is a nice soft green. I think it's going to turn out nicely, not as long as I'd hoped but all I can do with the thread available. Check back - hopefully a nice gift for $4.00.

Beautiful scarf. I have been making the medallions with the 20 thread. I like the idea of the heavier and larger; may have to try this. You did a great job!

Well, Christmas has been here and past and DD said she loved her scarf - couldn't wait to wear it to work. She's a high school teacher so she should have lots of opportunities for comments of all kinds!

Sherri, Kudos to you and the beautiful scarf, great color too. I'm sure your daughter will jump on it like a "duck on a junebug" (sorry, just had to add that on, I'm reading "Gone With the Wind" and Margaret Mitchell had her characters exclaim that). Well made too. Lucky daughter!

Sherri, your grandma sure left you a heritage, pass it on, sweet one. So many of our talents have gone the way of the wagon train(they brought us on a journey but we don't 'travel' that way anymore). I am a grandma too and wish to pass these talents on to my grandchildren. And with a little one coming in April, I hope to do just that. You are so lucky you paid attention when your Grandma passed these 'treasures' on to you. What a gift! If more of our ancestors did this we would not all be in the state we are in these days. Gifts under and around the home would all be handmade with love. Wow, I'd better get off my 'soap box' or 'band wagon' and get back to my crochet....

Find your joy and live it. http://cheneybaglady.blogspot.com/http://www.kpaints.etsy.com

OMG I just got really weepy sitting here at the computer. I went back and looked at the close-up of the medallion picture and it brought back a flood of memories of my grandma teaching me to crochet when I was a little girl. I was an only child and we lived next door to my grandparents so I spent a LOT of time over there. Grandma taught me to crochet, to knit, and to embroider - skills I used almost everyday still. She taught me with crochet thread and a tiny steel needle - the only kind of crochet that she did - mostly to edge pillowcases and dresser scarves. I translated that over to yarn crochet years later. I only just realized how those days I spent with my patient old Granny have saved us a time or two lately with hubby being out of work. I use those skills to make the hats, scarves, etc. that I sell, as well as the applique and edging on the jackets that I sell. My mom never learned any of those skills and didn't have any interest. Thank god I did. Talk about teaching someone to fish - Grandma taught me a skill that has pulled our family through hard economic times more than once. I never made the connection before - but boy would she be proud. She raised a family of 12 kids through the depression without a word of complaint. Now I really am crying.

the pattern is very easy to follow. The only thing is - I used a much bigger thread than the pattern calls for so I only made 8 hexagons instead of 34 like the pattern calls for. Then when I was finished joining them together, I sc'd all the way around to give it a more finished look - which was appropriate with the heavier thread. I don't know that it would be with the size 20 called for. Also, I would have liked to make it longer - maybe even 11 hexagons, but our little store didn't have any more thread and I'm without transportation so 8 had to do. If you have the MJ's book, or if you already know how to crochet, any of you can make this hexagon - it is a very well written pattern! Have fun with it!
