Posted - Sep 16 2008 : 8:48:32 PM hi pamela isnt it crazy the way they act like stuff that is thrown away by one person couldnt possibly be used by another?? they tried last year to get the transfer sites closed to recycling but had so many people show up to fight it that the meeting lasted 4 hours longer than it was supposed to and not everyone got to testify! needless to say we still get to utilize the great stuff found there! my cabin is pretty much furnished from there! any chance of you visiting again? would love to meet you )or anyone else from here that visits)! peace connie in alaska |

Posted - Sep 16 2008 : 8:38:35 PM Well, Connie at least you have the transfer station to "shop" in. We found these when I was up there last summer (2007). We found fabric and vintage clothes and all sorts of stuff. Sarah found a set of metal school lockers. Painted them up and they now hold all of her kids sporting things and more. They each have their own long and short locker. They look like they came from Ikea, but look vintage! Yeah, the transfer station is kinda dirty, but you can just wash things up and there are fine. This is where Sarah takes anything she wants to donate now. Being a bit of a dumpster diver...I would love to have the chance to dig in a transfer station (recycle from) here. They won't let anyone take anything from the dump here (if they know about it)...such a waste and more to fill up our landfills. I guess I got a little off topic, huh? I saw a very cool old sewing machine (black)in the thrift shop where I volunteer last winter...I could kick myself now for not getting it. But I already had four old ones, so...I let it go. But it said right on the front "Queen of the West" in a fancy gold printing. It really was a treasure. Oh well, I am sure someone is loving it.

Posted - Sep 16 2008 : 10:33:23 AM ok, update on number of machines I have... DD & I where in town & decided to take a quick detour over to the Goodwill store, honest,,,I said "do not let me buy another sewing machine,,,your father will have a heart attack!"...guess what I did??? yep, bought another one, an old singer for $10. it is probablly from the 1920-30's and works except the light attachment wire was cut & the pedal is missing but it runs off electricity so I can have hubby(who by the way didn't have a heart attack, just rolled his eyes at me) wire up a new pedal. Actually I just plan to keep this one for decoration. Now DON'T let me buy any more!!! I have enough!!!! lol!

Posted - Aug 30 2008 : 6:21:36 PM Diana -- If your machine is a handcrank then it isn't a featherweight. Featherweights were Singers made of aluminum and weigh about 11 pounds, while handcranks were made of cast iron and weigh 30 pounds or more. Do you have a picture or a serial number? If we can figure out what it is we can proceed with finding parts.

Posted - Aug 28 2008 : 11:34:03 PM grace i sure hope that riccar is not the "super stretch" model or if it is that the one i had was the bad apple in the barrel because it was so terrible! to sew a simple light weight cotton garment i usually ended up using at least 5 needles! i ended up giving it away to someone who begged for it and she then at my suggestion sent it to the dump!! i have used alot of machines in my life and that was by far the worst!! good luck with yours! peace connie in alaska |

Posted - Aug 28 2008 : 9:41:31 PM ok, don't laugh....yep, I bought another machine. I bought a Riccar w/ sewing table/desk for $50 but it was in absolutly pristine shape. I now have 3 work stations set up so I can have friends over to sew...wahoooo!

Posted - Aug 28 2008 : 07:50:12 AM And Judith...I wish I had your knowledge regarding treadles...I get a bit intimidated looking them over as I don't know much about them to know if they are able to be rehabilitated or not! Bet you've got enough know-how to write a book! Jami in WA

Posted - Aug 28 2008 : 07:46:12 AM Whoa on the machines! I just bought a Singer 15-91 and it's going to be machine #3 (including my serger). I would still like a people powered machine but they are going for too much money around here so I keep looking.
Connie, the thrift stores here aren't very thrifty either! I drive 35 miles to Yakima and the same Goodwill store has everything for half of the price of the one here. I don't get it! Jami in WA

Posted - Aug 27 2008 : 5:28:44 PM Judith do you have any good places to get a part for an old singer feather weight crank machine my DH bought it for me and would love to use it but it is missing a piece on the bed of the machine. Any information would be great.

Posted - Aug 27 2008 : 11:40:54 AM I picked up a computerized Viking for $250 at our thrift a few months ago and discovered when I got home that the reverse didn't work along with some of the fancy stitches. Took it to the Viking guy in town and he said that it needed $300 worth of work, or for $350 I could just get a newer/refurbished one! Of course our thrift store doesn't take returns either (ouch!). So now I'm back to my old Singer 2404 Merritt that I had purchased from the same store about a year earlier for $4.50 (it was half off!). That Singer has been the best investment I've ever made!!

While out at a local 2nd hand store I spotted a White rotarty maching in a cabinet, but not in to good of condition...the store wanted $79 for it....I almost bought it but decided to pass on it. I have my grammy jackon's turn of the century White treadle machine which I love dearly. >^..^<

Posted - Aug 24 2008 : 11:50:10 PM I don't have 100 sewing machines; at least not yet...... it's only around 60, mostly antique/vintage handcranks, a dozen or so treadles, and several electric. I love finding the old ones and getting them working again. All my sewing is done on treadle or handcrank (they're good for piecing quilts). I haven't used an electric machine in a couple of years as I find the people-powered ones much more relaxing to use. I have pictures of quite a few of them at http://community.webshots.com/user/stitchinwitch1

Posted - Aug 23 2008 : 12:13:51 PM most of the gas we get is from outside! we get very little from the pipeline becasue it is mroe profitable for the big oil companies to sell it to japan! we even ahve a refinery in north pole (just south of fairbanks) and they only make aviation fuel! why should theyy care that the cost of fuel is so high if they can make a profit! grrrrr makes me livid! i dont think groceries have been that much higher except for fresh produce until the fuel prices jumped so high. now everythign is soooo high its a good thing we grow our own meat! sadly this summer has been so cold that gardens has done almost nothing and even wild berries have been pretty skimpy. peace connie in alaska peace connie in alaska |

Posted - Aug 23 2008 : 11:53:46 AM Wow! I always thought that gas was cheaper up there because of the pipeline. I knew that food items were tough on the pocketbook though. |

Posted - Aug 23 2008 : 11:20:03 AM star the only time we are part of the united states is when it comes to laws and taxes! the rest of the time we are a foreing country! in fact the military gets overseas pay for alaska! even tho its no farthur to ship, say washington to alaska, than say washignton to florida we usually have to pay 4 or more times the postage when mailordering! why you ask? cuz they can!! we usually have things shipped to a friend who then ships to us and it costs alot less! one seed company i ordered from wanted $15 for shipping 6 packets of seed!! they shipped to her address for free and she shipped to me for under $2!! alaska has its good and bad, prices are often the bad lol. we are paying the highest fuel costs in the country. some of the villages paying over $10 per gallon for gas! here in fairbanks it was $4.35 the last time i was in town. peace connie |

Posted - Aug 23 2008 : 06:28:54 AM Great find Grace!! I keep hoping to walk in on a great treadle find at my thrift stores. I went to all of them yesterday, with my hubby's blessing...looking for cast iron pans. I found some beauties!! Got a Griswold #7 (Erie, PA) markings and it is perfect....for $5. (That is a steal!) Also a Griswold crispy cornstick pan, a flat single burner gridle and a #8 pan. All are in almost new condition...all Granny's era and all for less than $25. We desperately needed new "non-stick" pans, and my hubby finally agreed to try cast iron. (he does alot of cooking.)
And: HE loves them!!! Yeah.
Oh, my sewing machine count: 3 sergers, 2 embroidery, 1 electronic Kenmore (my work horse machine), 2 White Rotary (one is 1936 and in a cabinet and one table top 1977 model..my old workhorse now retired.) Also a Simplicity quilter that I gave to my daughter. That's about it. The two embroidery were given to me by my mother before she passed away. They are in my attic and I want to bring them down when the girls get back into school so that I can learn how to use them.
Well, off to do some back to school sewing for my youngest daughter today, then off to the county fair to see if our entries won anything! Later all..............
