My goodness Karin, I want to be a kitty at your house. That little bed is so cute and the little chair. I know from the things I have that you made, how beautiful your quilting is. Lots of nice pictures. Love looking at them.

Ronna I know what you mean about dealers, they are pretty weaselly sometimes. I thrift because I love all the old things and I love to share the stuff with my friends, but I'm not interested in turning over my treasure to some dealer. I've lived in Maine most of my life and I get so tired of hearing people pissing and moaning about how they had three old bottlecaps right after WW!! that if they hadn't tossed them, they'd be worth all kinds of money. or how they had an old bucket, whatever, it just is tedious, I wouldn't want to spend my whole life going around trying to price everything I ever had. I try to enjoy the present, and I am thankful to have found this forum, lots of remarkable women here.....Karin

Well, that sounds tasty, Teddie. We are going to build a firepit in the back yard at some point this summer, and that sounds like a great way to
put that red handled item to use. I have a cast iron pan for making aebleskive, Danish round pancakes. They are similar, you cook the bottom half of the batter, drop in a little fresh applesauce, flip em over and roll them in sugar. Haven't done that in about 40 years. My mother was Danish so we had lots of wonderful food traditions, and some I was not so fond of, eel never appealed to me, not reindeer meatballs, but the desserts and the cookies are out of this world. When i was really little my grandmother used to send us a big box of different Danish cookies she made. My brother and I always thought that was the perfect gift....Karin

Kari,
the quilts are great! my kitties are spoiled, but they don't have quilts.
We didn't make cheese sandwiches . We made apple or cherry pies. We used the bread, but put canned pie filling into it. Then cooked them over and open fire. When you took them out you rolled them in powdered sugar. We called them camper pies since we did this when camping. you'll have to make some.

TEDDIE

Too blessed to be stressed!

That 'fever' is addicting, no doubt. Isn't it totally astounding what some people will give away or sell for pennies at a yard sale. Some of my stuff, I buy with the intention of giving away or selling for just what I paid; others I would rather throw in the trash than sell to someone who offends me with a dollar offer on a $50 item..even if I only paid the silly dollar for it. I'm not dumb or stupid. There's a guy who goes to all the yard sales here asking for old cast iron...I tell him I have lots, but not to sell at what he's willing to pay. He wants it for a couple of bucks to resell for the going prices. I can spot a dealer as soon as I see them. It's like some law enforcement and no offense intended, but certain people just have "the look". I love to ace out the dealers in the thrift shops..one told me she hated me and I do think she was serious, cause I got a pair of flapper era ladies shoes at the antique mall-when I was helping a friend and this one has a booth there. Hey, first come, first serve. Even the manager told me she didn't have time to find all the underpriced stuff like I did. Good shopping, wherever it might be, takes time.
OK, Karin, ready for more photos from you. Isn't it fun to share :)

I hate to tell you all what I did today, I think maybe that was a yard sale tick that latched on to me and gave me this wicked case of junkstore fever. I went to my favorite place today and got, oh my, treasures galore. I;ll have to go sit down cellar and muse on my misbehaving. Surely I;m too old to be having so much fun...I'll post pictures at some point...I better go check on my garden, who knows what's popped up there....Karin

Jess, we never made anything but cheese sammies with the gadget, guess fruit comes under the "whatever" heading. I do recall if the bread or insides or the toaster weren't greased well, they would stick and it would be a gooey mess. Canned fruit pie filling would probably be the easiest to use for sweet pies.
I had a large number of red, green and yellow wood handled kitchen utensils. Daughter has whatever she wanted, think I sold some to an antique dealer and probably still have a box full hiding somewhere. No place to hang them to display in this kitchen. Nearly all the wall space is cupboards, window or appliances. Not complaining about that, needed the extra cupboards we had built by the original cabinetmaker.

thanks for the info on the "red-handled object"! now, i guess i'll have to go out and look for one too! i have so much fun scouring flea markets, garage sales, etc. looking for old kitchen utensils (i collect the red-handled ones, but i do have quite a few green-handled ones as well) i love to use these things and think of how many ladies used them before me-----do you think they were good cooks?! ha, ha! oh, and i love the ruby/red glass, too! i think colored glass is soooo happy to have around, doesn't it just make you want to smile when you look at it? and perfect for christmas, valentines day, 4th of july.....

Wow, that is a beautiful collection of glass, I love the color. I 'll have to be on the lookout for that, I love the cupboard color too, very pretty.

Thank you, Sunshine, for identifying the red dish.
Sue, Ronna told me the red handles gadget is used to make toasted sandwiches, you cut off the corners after you have greased the inside of the circles and put your cheese sandw3ich inside. I'm going to have to try it out some day soon...Tuxedo kitties are so special, my son had a tusedo cat named Felix, he disappeared one day, we were sad to lose him. Thanks for the quilt complements. I hope I can get back to some big ufos in my sewing room soon. Karin

I can help you a little on the Longaberger, Karin. It's a basket company, started by the Longaberger family in Dresden, Ohio. The company was started as a family business, producing 3-4 types of utilitarian farm and home baskets, and then in the early 80's, became a "collectible". The actual headquarters of the company is a building that looks like their signature gathering basket. Pretty cool. I recognize the drum piece as one of their Christmas limited edition items. Congrats on a great find! http://www.longaberger.com/ourProducts.aspx

The bed that Tubby is sleeping on is a mid-Victorian style called Westlake. It's lovely, and has some neoclassic lines, a few years before "gaudy" victorian in the 1880's...

Well I turned that pot upside down and it does say Longaberger, I have no idea what that means. I guess I'll look it up on the internet,,,I thought it looked very heavy duty with the bricks and the strapping, made me think of baking Dungeon Beans or maybe Lobscouse . I can't remember what the last one is, I remember it from a book i read a million years ago, I think it is something they feed the sailors who swill out the bilge water, or maybe it is made with bilge water, then again it might have been one of those turn of the century New England specialos made of crackers and fish heads or clams. Well, far more drivel than any one needed. I also didn't know that was a Westlake bed that Tubby had wedged his large butt into, it just was so cute, I got it years ago at an antique store. Glad to know it has a background, I'll look that up as well. Thanks. Karin

Way Cool, Karen!!!! I love, love those quilts. Just thinking, that red crock with a lid that looks like a drum? Is that a Longaberger piece? If so, what a dealio! I'm crazy for your daughter's picture, and that kitty sleeping in the westlake bed is TOO cute!

Gotta go watch the Belmont :)

Sorry to inflict a few more, but I;m just trying to normalize my yard sale karma, I mean it is such fun to look at everyone else's loot. I hope. I like this cake keeper and the red I'm not sure what it is, too heavy for a glass, maybe a stubby little vase or something you could bathe a tarantula in, will be going to the

Karin,
You make all the kitty quilts?? Lucky cats. I love the way Tubby made him/her self confortable on the doll/cat bed.
The long red handled device is for making toasted cheese sandwiches on the stove top or fireplace or campfire. butter the outside of two slices of bread, put cheese (or whatever) inside, close it tight. Trim the crust or whatever is outside the round shape off, and then turn it back and forth over the fire until you think it's done. Can open a bit to see if the bread has toasted to your specification. They were popular in the 50's and will have to admit have eaten a lot of toasted cheese sandwiches made on one. I see them occasionally now. The later ones were made of much thinner aluminum and not very good. Looks like yours is older.
Now I know what I can put in with your sailor fabric...I'll share one of my Nevada plates with you. Have duplicates of a few, so will choose one.

I'll go take a coma now and see if I can find the last kitty quilt and inflict that on all of you, Karin
