Since I started WW and have started to lose some weight, I have been inspired to sew myself some new clothes. I have almost always worn jeans everyday, but I'd like to sew myself a few "everyday skirts" and "everyday dresses" to wear around the house. Have any of you done this and if so, can you recommend any good patterns?

I'm kind of in the same boat, Sherri. You'd think I was practically born in jeans and a tshirt, but I've started to want something more girly that's not too fancy.

Found some great stuff on etsy.com. Lots of vintage patterns available. (I'm really into vintage right now, especially 40's dresses.) Also, some of my favorites are below. Now I must go. Coffee is calling.

Do you have any fabric stores near you? I have Joann's and Hancock here (50 miles away). I watch there ads close, almost every holiday (major or minor)they have patterns on sale for a buck. I them check them out on line at McCalls or Simplicity. They I can just get them out of the drawers. i have a very large pattern collection. I have noticed that Butterick tends to be rather high waisted that what is fashioable these days. I have a short torso and I notice that they pants tend to ride up to my ribs. Its not a pleasant feeling.

Finished my dress last night about 11 pm and tried it on. It's a little too big - wearable, but next time I'll make the next smaller size. That's nice for a change! Anyway, I added pockets with rickrack to tie in the bodice fabric and the pockets were too low! So, instead of going to bed like someone with sense, I sat up, blearly eyed, and picked the stitching out of the pockets and moved them up a few inches. I'm surprised I didn't rip a big hole in the skirt as sleepy as I was. But, it worked out fine and now I have a new dress - cotton with rick-rack - made of remnants - true farmgirl style!!

Well, I found the "Everyday Dresses" pattern by TaylorMade Designs and cut one out. It's from material I had lying around the house - two different coordinating prints. This dress goes together so easily and so quickly. I'll try and post a pic when I'm finished. I would recommend this pattern to anyone - several variations also.

I can take a picture of my skirts, but they are really ordinary - the denim skirt is a heavyweight denim that I made out of some denim I had purchased at Wal-Mart to make some kid's overalls for my business. When I got it home and layed it out, one side (the side that was down when she was cutting it of course) had some what look like bleach spots on it. I live too far from Wal-Mart to take it back, so I used it for my skirt. Makes a good "everyday" skirt.
The kahaki one is ordinary too - just straight with elastic. I'll wait until I make the dress I have cut out and the black skirt today to take pictures, but everything is really simple and plain. When I lose some more weight, I'll start making the fancy stuff LOL!

I have that skirt book too, it is very inspirational though I;ve only made two skirts so far, one for my daughter and one for a friend of my son. It is such a treat to see something that has so many wonderful pictures, I might have to make myself a skirt one of these days...Karin

So far, I have made a denim skirt with a ruffle on the bottom, a kahki colored long straight skirt (stretch denim) and I have a dress cut out. Tomorrow I'm going to make a black twill skirt - simple A line with an elastic waist. Black should be really practical.

Julia Hayes posted a couple of years ago about a dress that she liked to make - if I remember right she called it an "everyday dress". Any of you old timers remember that? Julia - if you read this - correct me if I'm wrong!! What was that dress like?

Everyday skirts...simplicity usually has some really good patterns. I get mine from Walmart most of the time. McCalls patterns seem to run big so I try to keep away from those. Theres a good selection but I find that the full longer ones were easy to do things in. Jumpers are good too as long as the skirt is full. I can't remmeber the pattern numbers though.
hope that helps
