Advice from a Singer Sewing Manual from 1949:

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing.Think about what you are going to do. . .never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically.
Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a
clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing
machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order,
powder and lipstick put on . . .[If] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you
should.

this is so funny. i would like to add "make sure you have a shower before sewing" i was trying to finish up my daughter's easter dress yesterday and the zipper almost killed me. after i took a shower and came back and did it my way instead of the directions, it worked! i guess the shower cleaned the dust out of my brain, too! :)

Well my living room is picked up, and I will do dishes after Nora goes to bed (so more aren't being created!LOL) and Laundry...well... that's my own personal demon, but it's actually 75% done!

So I am almost ready to finish up my last two quilts and start on a new project that I am super excited about (but it's Top Secret! :D)

Ohhh my gosh...I about fell out of my chair when I read that. I've never made sure my dishes were clean (because they never all are) and I usually sew dressed like a scrub in sweatpants. Ohhh that's rich!

I have to have my other housework caught up or I don't enjoy the sewing. I'm sure this is because my Mother harassed me into this line of thinking. Bless her soul. I do, however, dress for sewing ..... I try to wear the most comfortable clothes that I can that will not attract fabric, thread and fuzz. So , in a way, I guess I'm also dressing for Hubby. He appreciates when I don't leave him covered in thread and fuzz after I have hugged him. He returns the favor by leaving me alone when I'm sewing/crafting. Actually I'm sure he likes it because I am leaving him alone with CNN. LOL
This has been a great thread. I really enjoyed everyone's sense of humor.

I like surprising my sweetie when he comes home with a nice dress and all. Sometimes he actually notices, but usually he comes home from work "Still at work" and so I'm on my own here, I'll try dressing up for my sewing machine and see if my sewing improves though

I think it is great that we can appreciate women from all walks of life on this forum. I think it is great that for some it works out to be able to be the brilliant hostess of a more traditional family set up, and I also think it is equally great to be the brilliant busy women!

I have gone through cycles of both, so I can see both sides. Right now I am trying to rehab my house so it is actually livable (how do the chores get so out of hand when both are working?) If you have time to gussy yourself up, I think it is fun to do. But I also know the reality of sewing on a deadline- as in "Hold on Nora! And please don't "go" on the floor! Mommy is almost done hemming your diaper!" LOL

I do giggle when i wear my big sparkly diamond-like earrings with my overalls... maybe i should wear them all the time - Robin's point is well taken and i am endeavoring to be more like her -Sweet, grateful, tender and kind, while at the same time laughing so hard my eyes are watering. Can't put on mascara till the laughing dies down 'cause i don't have waterproof. love, karen

Jonni,
Vodka and tonic. Is that for him or you?
That is too funny. And so what happens when he works from home and you come in from work?

I didn't mean that I NEVER dress nice or fix my hair..just not in order to sew. Not that I get flowers weekly either, though...lucky you!

I think if my husband came home and found me in a dress and lipstick, he'd think I was having an affair! Perhaps I'll try the clean dishes and maybe some chapstick and see if my sewing improves. Thanks for the "timely" tips!

Now Robin...simmer down. I'm just trying to to help these younger girls understand why their sewing projects might not be turning out the way they should.

I too gussy up a little for my guy...but never even considered doing it for the sewing machine. I should treat my machine better.

Ah, c'mon -- you guys are breaking my heart here.

I mean, of course the advice is charmingly obsolete. But the responses to the thread make me want to give it a real effort anyway.

Because, you know, it's not THAT ridiculous to be nicely dressed with a little makeup on when your husband gets home. Even if you don't make the effort just to sit at your sewing table.

If I went on a "Farmboys" chatroom and found a thread of guys mocking the idea that they should bring their wives flowers on a regular basis, that would make me cry too. Sure, most won't do it on a weekly basis, but that doesn't mean they couldn't see that the basis of such advice was sound.

My husband is in graduate school AND works full time to support our family. And the appreciation he shows when I have a margarita mixed for him, or am wearing his favorite dress, or yes, the dreaded LIPSTICK when he gets home is touching. I'm not saying I don't work my behind off to raise our two-going-on-three children and make our household work on a budget that includes paying for a master's degree. But that everyone is working so hard around here just makes the small efforts that we both put into the marriage that much more important.

And yes, he brings me flowers every week.

Best,

Robin

wow..my how times have changed. I don't EVER wear lipstick (my lips are big enough, thank you very much) and if my hair EVER was neat or I wore a dress when I sewed my family would send in the white coated guys for me. I generally am wearing overalls, barefoot with my hair in a messy ponytail and you can bet that my house dosn't look perfect either.

Man, they would hate me, I just threw away my favorite night gown of 10 years. It did not have any hole but was getting quite see through. It was not keeping me warm so I just had to give it up. I thought my husband jaw was going to hit the floor. He said, something I thought was your burial gown...when its comfortable, I don't do change well...

what shoes do you wear with that dress? Stillettos or bunny slippers?

I want to get it right before I start my next quilt.
