Posted - Jul 24 2007 : 5:26:00 PM I know it is a little early, but I was thinking that we could start this thread now to make sure we all agree on size, etc.
I was thinking 12 inch blocks this time so we can make a lap quilt when we are done. I have a few links to great sites that have tons to choose from.
The fabrics will be fall colors.
How about a deadline of September 15? You send me your blocks with another envelope addressed to yourself with the same amount of postage inside the package.
Should we limit to 12? I could do more if you want. Let me know!
Here is a link to block patterns. You have to scroll to the bottom of the page and there is a list of blocks and their sizes.

Posted - Nov 13 2007 : 12:38:59 PM Sunshine, beautiful job on your quilt top. Now I feel motivated to work on mine, maybe this weekend. I got my fabric and just need to lay out the blocks and cut the sashing and cornerstones. I think my kids will help me lay them out. I can go at my own pace after that. Love the orange color for your border.

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 7:06:55 PM Oh Sunshine!! That looks great! I cannot wait to get mine together now.
Jess: It's never perfect when you are working with fabric. A little stretching here and there and if you iron as you go, that can stretch too. Also, the cutting could be a little off here and there. Oh, and the stitching can go off by the littlest bit, and let's see what else I have had go wrong without even realizing it...
My attitude is, "Oh, well. Pull it a little and pin if you have to and it will still be gorgeous and WARM!!" Then I sometimes cut all the blocks to match when I am done with them (only if they are really off by a 1/2 inch or more.
This is my hobby, I don't need something else to bring on stress and I am sure you feel the same. If your costumes are any indicator of how your finished product comes out, then I am totally jealous! |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 6:25:48 PM you are so right!!!!! i wing things alot, nothing is ever really precise with me, just put together because i like it. when i was in art school, that was a different story, but now...i am my only critic...adn i am okay with that. |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 5:51:22 PM Even if I was having a cup of java and sewing with you I would be just as relaxed some I sewed with made me feel nothing was right. But its all a confidence thing in yourself! |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 5:47:52 PM oh yes dont worry about me I have done several and I have peeps that I do it with, not on a reg basis though. i am just challenged mathmatically, and you all are very friendly about mistakes. |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 5:45:13 PM Oh poor girl belive me I would if I could but I can't so I won't. You need to get together with some girls in your hood. Thats what I did when I started out. Just have fun with it. Once you are relaxed with the process it comes out much better I find. |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 5:32:10 PM why cant you girls all come over when i am projecting..i know it would be far more fun helpful and efficient..i am going for that farmgirl commune idea. |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 5:30:11 PM Hey that turned out beautiful too!
Jess pins do help line up uour seams but also your ruler could be sliding when cutting. There is no such thing as a perfect quilt anyway. I am not a perfectionist so I usually live with my mistakes when I get that far unless I notice before piecing them together. A quarter inch foot also helps to keep everything accurate. |

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 3:59:45 PM yep that was my prervious method, but since i am always off, i am going to try pinning..if that doesnot work, then it is meant wor me to have uneven block spacing..i am not going to lose sleep over it. yours however look marvelous!! |
sunshine |
Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 3:54:46 PM I don't use pins but if you have problem best to use them. I finger pin. Which means the next set of seams that have to line up I match up ( seams are almost always facing opposite directions so they nest well) then hold that and gauge it when I am half way to it if I have to feed in excess to or bottom or if it is lined up well.

Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 3:45:12 PM yes i understand that, i just rarely actually pin my rows of sashing..i always just blame bad math skills, I better break out the pins!! |
sunshine |
Posted - Nov 12 2007 : 3:35:36 PM the corners I was referring to are the small corner blocks of the quilt that way you are checking every block that things are lined up
