I am taking an idea from "Botanical Bath" Elizabeth to post our apron creations on one thread so that we can all see how creative we farmgirls are. I will start with an apron I made this morning. This fabric grabbed me and held me hostage until I promised to make an apron with it.....I love it. It is for sale on my etsy, but if it doesn't sell, I will keep it for myself (like I need another Apron!) But then, can you ever really have too many??????

Come on girls.....post your pictures here!

Keep Smiling.....Bev

Autumn, you are really busy. We had large rain storm that came in early this morning, and it is still raining. We really needed the rain. It really is a sewing day, but we are watching a movie that my son borrowed from the library.

Ok, so here is the list of all who would like to join together for a farmgirl chapter without borders:

Elizabeth (BotanicalBath)
Naomi Michelle (Naomi Michelle)
Carol Sue (Carol Sue)
Georgann (Aunt George)
Denise (Levisgrammy)
Linda (Yarnmamma)
(Nashbabe)....I need your name and address, please....e-mail me
Stephanie (Queenofdreams4U)
Jess (Smoothiejuice)
(Katie-Ell)....I need your name and address, too, please....e-mail me
Kathie (Kathie)
Sheryl-lyn (Sewgirlie)
Bonne (Bonne)
Sarah (Mustang Suzie)
Debi (Mima)
Bev (Bee Haven Maven)

Now, my question is this....
1. should we start our own thread....this is getting long....?
2. I worry that this thread is getting too long and so other people on the forum are starting to run out of first page room. I suspect we will keep this going ad infinitum....so would it not be kinder to start a new Apron Sew-a-long to keep our sewing projects alive but not add a burdon to the forum.......??????? Just food for thought. This is wonderful and I want to keep it alive, but for a new member it is now quite forboding.....and nearly impossible to keep up with starting at the beginning. Maybe we need chapter 2???

Let me know what you think.......

I was just reading through and catching up here- lots of ideas going on!!
As I read through I was thinking,"Now why do I feel the need to catch up? Why are these women and what they sew or create important to me?"
I have many many friends so it's not lack of relationships- so why? I finally figured out that it is indeed the sewing that I have a need to share with others. OK -Im not really in the same category of excellence or prolific industry as most of you here but that seems to draw me even more. Since becoming active here, on this thread, I have learned a couple of things(more than a couple- but these apply to sewing)
#1.I have learned to apply bias tape(to every flat surface known to man!!!)
#2 And that some of my "quirky" ideas are really ok.(ex. I see these fantastic dresses at the thrift store but they are way too big for me- I always thought I could kinda recut and make them into unique creations. Well none of my sisters(friends-no real sisters or siblings living) sew and the idea , when I mention it, just causes their eyes to glaze over and we quickly move on to cooking or the sale at Penny's or Old Navy.
So the dresses sit at the thrift.
Since joining this thread I have seen Georgeann,I think, do something similar- so I did it!!!Turned out FANTASTIC!!

Anyway, I love the sewing n sharing that goes on and it inspires me to keep at it. I am challenged to try new things and trust my instincts with new ideas. Even if they dont work out it is important to try.
It is important to push ourselves on to more creative ways to express ourselves and sewing does that-at least for me.
So a BIG thank you to my "Sewing Sisters" and keep pushing me and challenging me with your work and creativity! And thanks for taking the time to teach me!
It is inspiring!!!
Blessings!!

I like the Sewing Bees too. And like I mentioned, I'll go with what the group thought is. I'm very easy that way!

Great idea........simple, industrious and it is a play on words of quilting bee. I too have led a very structured life....you know nurses and all....

That name was in my list of suggestions that I was going to post, so great minds think alike. I agree with the queen bee being MJ's. I love the denim jacket idea.....make one that best fits each individual.

Anyway........can any of our sewing bees use a Queen size Hobbs, Heirloom 80/20 cotton/poly quilt batting?

I have a brand new one that couldn't be sold at the store because someone ripped open the plastic bag. The batting has never been taken out of the bag though, so it is still in the original fold/roll. Oh, it is a BLACK batting. It is one of the battings designed for an heirloom loft of 1/8". The price tag on the bag is $19.99.

Let me know, G

Ok Girls, it has taken me a half hour to catch up on all your meanderings since yesterday. But watching the process was fascinating. I love you all....so full of enthusiasm and energy and imagination!

Stephanie.....I was honored that you came up with that name. I of course love it because it is my name. But it will stay that way....my name....for several reassons. But seriously, thank you, i am honored.

Ok, so on with it. Here are my opinions.

I love the idea of the bee, the sewing machine (treadle), and a teapot. We do all have that in common. There is a part of me that is drawn to something wild and howling and that is because as I always say..."I live within the box". My life is very structured and scheduled so I naturally long to howl at the moon and dance around in flowing gowns tossing flower petals in the air. But back to reality.....

We are a group of highly creative, talented, strong minded, industrious, nurturing (and so much more) women who found each other through a love of sewing. We express ourselve in our craft....we share it with others.... so to me bees and sewing make perfect sense. We can incorporate our other values in our mission statement.

You have all had great ideas. For those of you that long to dance in the moonlight, etc.....well we can do that some crazy night when we are all celebrating together. But what we want to show to the rest of the farmgirls and everybody else is probably something more like the bees. Any ferocious connotation attached to the wolf is not what we want others to associate with our name.

Now, for our name....I liked all the ideas....the thing about the queen bees is that THAT is the Mary Jane's name she uses for her forum posts...so I suggest we not use that.

How about the "Sewing Bees" ...it is simple, it is what we do, all the characteristics of the bee is who we are.....yada yada yada.

I like the fabric that was suggested, it is not readily available, it is different and being that it is for breast cancer makes it a good thing, too. It seems fine to me that we use different colors if you feel strongly about pink not being your best color.....different styles, but yet the same pattern. Great idea, I think.

If we all agree, then I suggest that if any of you have graphic design capabilities, you get to work and see what you can come up with using a sewing machine and a bee and if you like a teapot. Then we can decide which one we like the best. And I will have the patches made, unless any of you know a particular company you think we should use....

This process has been good...we all have different personalities and it shows in our writing. I have no doubt, however, that we cannot come up with something that all are happy with. It is my hope that this is a place where we can always express ourselves...and not feel hurt or humiliation or negative energy. I am for open, tactful expression. This is a sisterhood with no borders...to quote the Three Muskateers....."One for all and all for one"

So.....can you live with being something like the "Sewing Bees"? and do you like the idea of a bee and a treadle and should we include a tea pot?

Oh, and thanks for the enthusiasm.....I love you all for that!

Denim jacket......or denim duster....free, flowing, etc.......good ideas. I suggested the denim jacket because that will apparently be the MJFarm uniformy thing. We can certainly do what we feel most comfortable in. Personally, I love a denim jacket, but understand that not all do....so go with what you like (or what you already have)...OK by me.

Stephanie,
I was rereading posts and realized that what I wrote was the offending post. I do hope you will accept the my apology as it was not my intent to offend.
It is very difficult to express the words in the correct way in this medium. No voice inflection just words. Again, I apologize to you Stephanie.

For those who dont know about Lilly

Lilly Pulitzer was christened Lillian Lee McKim to a socialite family in Roslyn, New York in 1931; Lilly Lee was her nickname among her friends. She was a middle child with an older sister, Mary Maude (called Memsey) and a younger sister Florence Fitch (Flossie).

She attended the Chapin School in New York City, along with the Bouvier sisters, Jacqueline and Lee. In 1949, she graduated from Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. She attended the college-cum-finishing school Fitch in New York City, but left after one semester to work as a midwife's assistant in West Virginia and as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in The Bronx.

In 1950, she eloped with Peter Pulitzer, the grandson of publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Together, they settled in Palm Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed a bohemian lifestyle - at least by the standards of Palm Beach at the time (entertaining in the kitchen, walking barefoot down Worth Avenue). The attractive young couple made Palm Beach their year round home where they raised three children (Peter, Liza and Minnie). Peter owned several Florida citrus groves, and with produce from the groves Lilly opened a juice stand on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

In the course of working at the juice stand, Lilly found that squeezing juice made a mess of her clothes. Seeking to camouflage the juice stains, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton. Lilly loved the dress that was produced for her, and it would later become her "Classic Shift Dress."

Lilly quickly found that customers loved her dress, so she had her dressmaker produce more in order to sell at her juice stand. Soon, however, she was selling more dresses than juice, so she decided to stop selling juice and instead focus on designing and selling what had become known as her "Lillys." Jackie Kennedy, then the First Lady, Lilly's friend and classmate from Chapin and Miss Porter's, was one of the first celebrities to sport Lilly's shift dress, and was featured in Life Magazine wearing one. Lilly's shift dresses suddenly became a fashion sensation.

In 1969, Lilly and Peter were divorced. She married Enrique Rousseau shortly thereafter. Although she legally changed her name to "Lillian McKim Rousseau," her clothing company continued to operate under the "Lilly Pulitzer" label with amazing success. Lilly continued to enjoy Palm Beach life, watching her children and grandchildren grow up. Enrique died from cancer in 1993 just as the fashion label was revived.

[edit] Clothing
Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Lilly's bright, colorful, well-made clothes were very popular and continued to be high-prized items. In 1980, Lisa Birnbach's bestselling tongue-in-cheek "guide," The Official Preppy Handbook, featured a golf skirt and "Lilly beach dress" as must-have items for "preppy" women. Arguably, Lilly Pulitzer's clothing was at the height of its original popularity in the early 1980s. In 1984, however, Lilly retired so as to spend time with her grandchildren, and closed down her entire clothing operation.

Thus, it came as a surprise to the fashion world when in January 1993 Lilly Pulitzer allowed her line to be revived. Lilly is not involved in the day to day administration of the company, but she continues to serve in the role of creative consultant, approving new designs, fabrics, and collections. Good sales have inspired branching out into other product lines. The company also produces Lilly bedding, men's clothing, children's clothing, maternity clothes, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Today, the company maintains 70 Lilly Pulitzer Signature Stores, several company-owned retail stores, and sells in major department stores such as Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus.

Recently, she published a pair of lifestyle books, Essentially Lilly: A Guide to Colorful Entertaining and Essentially Lilly: A Guide to Colorful Holidays, with her friend, author Jay Mulvaney, showcasing the "barefoot elegance" that characterizes her entertaining style, as well as two successful desk calendar books, Essentially Lilly 2005 Social Butterfly Engagement Calendar and Essentially Lilly 2006 Party Animal Engagement Calendar. Regarded, to her amusement, as "The Paris Hilton of Palm Beach," Lilly still lives in her "Jungle," enjoying life, her family and friends, and the pursuit of happiness.

In 2006/7, the Lilly Pulitzer identity was rebranded to bring Lilly's aesthetic to a whole new generation and audience to include a men's line and home collection.
