Is there such a thing as a comfortable bra??!!
Seriously, I'd love to get some recommendations. Must have: straps that will stay up and at the end of the day won't make you say, "bras should be outlawed"!

The only thing that works nicely and is comfortable on this 42DD is cedar creek shirts that have the built in bra thingy. I love them, they are soft and supportive and they breathe so well, since they are made from the same material as the shirt.
I have two tanktop style that I wear when I'm gonna be workin on any major housecleanin, in the gardens, or am goin out on the motorcycle. They are my favorite shirts!

I used to have that problem too - started washing them only on gentle cycle and never ever drying them. Have not had that problem since.

Try the Spanx "Bralelujah" style. Nordstroms often has them on half-price sale, making them about $30 apiece. Best bra I ever owned -- I have 6 nude and one black. Order a band & cup size smaller than you would normally wear.
I agree that going to a good old-fashioned lingerie store for a personal fitting is a great idea. The Fredrick's of Hollywood larger size bras are partly intended for drag queens (thus their heavy padding). You can get almost any size imaginable at places like Sylene in Bethesda, MD. I imagine it might even be possible to deal with them by mail, with measurements, comments about features you need, etc. I have a friend who gets Sylene to make her "industrial strength" bras with 5 hooks in the back, a really strong, wide band, boning on the sides to keep the girls upright, wide shoulder straps with padding and -- get this! -- pretty unpadded lace demi-cups. It would be worth hunting online for a similar place, if there is one, closer to you. |

You know, I have purchased bras from department stores that seem to feel comfortable when you try them on in the store, but when you wear them all day long, they are NOT comfortable and I end up having to throw them away. I used to buy bras at Maidenform, which tended to have decent bras in softer fabrics, with wider straps. I am a 34C, so pretty mid-range cup size, but I always choose bras with thicker straps and an underwire for better support. Many bras look delicate and pretty, with thin straps, bows, etc. but are really not practical to wear!
The bra I have had the most luck with is the Body by Victoria bra (full coverage, NOT demi - that just looks weird), from Victoria's Secret. They are lined on the inside with one of the softest fabrics I have felt on a bra. They are padded (but not too padded) to keep my coworkers from seeing when I am cold (very important), and come in a range of fabric colors and textures, so that even your everyday bra feels a little bit pretty. Mine is a neutral color, but in a lacy fabric, with thin lace on the edges to dress it up a bit. Unfortunately they are upwards of $30 to buy, but I get many years of use out of them, so I consider the price to be worth it. After all, you wear a bra every day, so it needs to be well-made and comfortable! If you live near one of the Victoria's Secret stores, it is also helpful to be able to go in and have one of their sales ladies measure you to make sure you are trying on the right size - I have read in multiple magazine articles that most American women wear bras that are way too small for them! Wearing undergarments in the right size makes a big difference in the way your clothes look, too - if your girls and upper body are being squeezed by your bra, it will be very obvious under your shirt

I am all about comfort. Soma is also another store to try. For busty ladies, they offer some pretty bras in a G cup. The Vanishing Back line does what it says. No bra bulges under a close fitting top. They've also come out with a minimizer, which I want to try. If you really want to get the girls front and center, try a Le Mystere bra mentioned in an earlier post. You will need to visit one of those fancy bra boutiques for a fitting; however, you can easily buy cheaper online once you know your correct size. |

I'm so glad, Michelle! I'm so picky, that I knew if I loved it, someone else was bound to :) Yes, do get yourself a few more--at the price it's doable, unlike other bras I've purchased. That way, you can have them around for a while if they discontinue them, then you'll have to start your search over again :(

I went out and bought the bra Jonni suggested from Target and have worn it for a few days and I DO have to say that it is very comfortable! It does not poke me in the side, the straps stay up fine and there are times when I don't realize it is on, it is definitely a keeper!
Now, I'll have to go buy a few more JUST IN CASE! Thanks for the suggestion Jonni!

I have found that some of the cheaper ones at Walmart target type stores do the best, but i dont know if i really count not much to hold up!
my fav is vassarette no underwire and straps have been staying up.
really im looking for a cotten bra, but havent found any comfortable

My favorite is actually a nursing bra made by womama, pretty and functional at the same time AND the absolute best part of it is that I can wear them all day long and not end up with a clogged milk duct or mastitis which is what I battled when I wore other "nursing" bras!!! Even though they are comfortable I usually end up not wearing one and just going with a "nursing cami" and we all know they really don't support you but they give me just enough coverage to wear while nursing so I go with either the built in nursing cami or the Womama nursing bra. I did notice that the womama has wider set straps and once I got used to that I really liked it because they didn't slip down like other, closer set bras. If I don't get back down to my pre-baby bra size I'm just going to keep wearing these nursing bras because they are so comfy and pretty!

Another option to try to get bras for less is Ebay. I buy the Le Mystere bras and they are expensive, which kept me from replacing them when they started to lose their support. I was going to settle for some other cheaper ones that just didn't have the same support, but looked on Ebay and found them for much less and they were brand new, just like the ones I got at Nordstrom. |

Jeanna before I knew my real size, I would wear the ones at Lane Bryant (too high a band size, and too small a cup, I didn't know better). I like their looks. You probably are wearing the right size though...I know my size is unusual. But, any way my point is, I used to by the Lane Bryant ones... heres the deal, one 38 isn't that much on a bra. lol My last ones were 75! lol But, two, Lane Bryant often has sales buy two, or buy three and get one free. And the outlet malls are even cheaper. Go and sign up for a credit card with them and you will get a lot of coupons. What I do with these kind of credit cards is, I sign up, I use them for the discount/coupons, but as soon as I use them, right there at the cash register I do the Credit Card transaction to pay so I get the discount, then I say ok, now I want to pay my credit card off, and I pay it off with cash right there, that way I don't have to pay interest or anything, and I still get the discount/coupons.

Judith, I've been really pleased--and I LOVE the back of the bra. It's wide, but sooo soft, and it doesn't fold over, and gives really smooth lines in a shirt, which is why they call them "t-shirt" bras. I don't care what they call em', I just need this company to keep making them!
A lot of support on the sides, too, without pushing together or being too confining. The center fits nicely in my chest and well, the "gals" look really great under clothes. Gravity is their only enemy, and yep, it's happening to me, too, but this bra has made a real difference for me.

Jonnie, I think I will have to find that bra too. I've been professionally fitted, but weight fluctuates, and body is f a l l i n g..... . Usually, I just roll them up and tuck them in my socks..but, sometimes I do want to look nice. Thanks for the tip.

My mother in-law got a bra for me when she was working at a local thrift store. It is the most comfortable bra I have ever had one. It comes from Lane Bryant and runs about $38, which is out of my price range. So I guess I will wear this one until it is thread bare and then maybe ask my husband for one for Christmas.

Also I am glad I found that particular chart. I kept ordering the wrong size UK bra...and now I know why! I ordered the G and it was too big, ordered the F and it was too small, and now I know why! I didn't realize that UK has a FF that is larger then a F but smaller then a G! So now I know why I kept not getting the right size in that brand! whew! lol However, all for not probably for me, cause I am really liking making my own now. lol

I am not really sure where you are getting your E, F, and G, if you think about it, the way you have it you skip a lot of letters. Here's a chart, and it's the chart I've seen for years every where, scroll down the chart.

The main difference, is sometimes the cup is shaped differently for a E then a DD, but they are the same "size" in inches.

First of all, don't try to measure yourself. The angle of your arms will distort the band measurement. Enlist another farm girl! Also, make sure you are wearing a bra, even if it doesn't quite fit (holds them up for the cup size).
Place a tape measure with the 26" mark at the base of your cleavage. Have the other person wrap the tape around your rib cage while you let your arms hang loose at your sides. Have them round up to the nearest inch and add 4 inches to get the band size. For example, my rib cage is 32 inches around, which makes my band size 36.
Now, put the 26 back in the middle and have your friend measure around the fullest part--again, stand straight and relax your arms. The difference in measurements is how you calculate cup size.
Less than 1" = AA
1" = A
2" = B
3" = C
4" = D
5" = DD
6" = DDD
7" = DDDD or E
8" = DDDDD or F
9" = DDDDDD or G
10" = J
11" = K
12" = L
Remember, if they squish out--go up a cup!

You're not that big, Lisa--and if they make to fit my "gals", then they make one for you, too!!! Michelle, I say give it a shot--for $15.00 (which is what I pay for them instore), you can't go wrong if it doesn't work out (which I hope it does!). I swear, it's the most comfortable bra I've had on in years--that's why I buy so many of them at one time, in case they decide to discontinue the bugger!
