Posted - Feb 23 2010 : 06:35:43 AM I have been discovering creative ways to reuse denim from jeans that have been worn, out grown or found at a thrift store.
first, I have cut 5" squares from the darkest denim and created a "quilt" for my kids. I use inexpensive blankets as batting, and fleece as the backing. I am using the blanket binding that is "satin" to finish them off. They are tied and therefore nice and comfy/heavy.
Second, I have created great little backpacks. My daughter, when she was two, insisted on carrying the diaper bag, but it was just too big for her. So I took some old jeans and created a little backpack that could hold her diaper, a few wipes (in a zip lock bag), and her sippi cup. She lOVED it. I then created the pattern for make larger packpacks. They have been quite a hit as gifts! I'm looking forward to selling some this summer at craft fairs.
Anyway, I am always looking for more ideas of things to make from old jeans and denim
It's all good :) |

Posted - Sep 22 2011 : 8:18:37 PM I cut up old jeans to use as patches for other jeans, or other heavy items. I patched the holes in several of my oldest shopping bags this way. Since I was making the patch from scrap anyway, and embroidering it on to my bag with blanket stitch, I figured I might as well go ahead and do a little decorative embroidery on the patch first. I love my patched-up shopping bags so much that I got inspired to embroider the tare weights on some cloth produce bags I have, and now I'm thinking about getting some of those cute iron-on transfers and doing designs on the bag as well. (Probably fruits and vegetables, since they're produce bags - I might use the patterns from Mary Jane's Stitching Room.)
Which reminds me..I need to patch my husband's jeans. :-) |

Posted - Sep 04 2011 : 07:20:32 AM I love to make old sweatshirts into cardigans and parts of jeans are perfect for embellishing...pockets, waistbands and by opening sideseams and hems you get a great kind of tie-dyed look. Nancy Zieman, Sewing with Nancy, on PBS has a book on repurposing denim with all sorts of cool projects!

Posted - Aug 09 2011 : 10:53:50 AM 24 years ago my husband died, my kids were small. His grandmother took his jeans and made a quilt. Today my daughter uses that quilt all the time. It has held up really well and she sleeps under the care of her father and her grandmother who passed away over 10 years ago too.. Sometimes the re-purposing can bring comfort !! |

Posted - Jul 15 2011 : 11:04:55 AM I got frustrated weeding garden the other day and was thinking I should go an buy some sort of tool belt to carry keys, cell phone and other garden tools right on my person, rather than having to go back and get it all. Then I remembered the denim stash! :) I sat down and made my own-farm girl style of course! :)
So much happier making it myself! Kaye

Posted - Jul 02 2011 : 8:23:40 PM We have a large quilt made out of jeans with a denim backing that we call the "camping blanket." It lives in my car and comes in handy at outing where you need to sit on the ground or cold stadium seats or just cold outdoor event. My mother-in-law made it early in our marriage and my hubby doesnt like it being used-he is afraid we will wear it out. Before his mom passed away a few years ago, she explained that the things she made us are to be used-not saved. He is more willing for us to use it now. This is still not true with all of her quilts and afghans...sigh...:)

Posted - Jul 02 2011 : 7:49:04 PM I made some fairly large sand bags with jean legs for my husband to use while sanding wood, his hobby is wood carving and he needs a soft sturdy surface to place his project on while he is sanding it.

Posted - Jun 26 2011 : 09:33:48 AM I used the leg from a pair of jeans to make a carrying bag for my tripod. Sewed the bottom closed, made a casing with a drawstring at the top. Turned out very useful. |

Posted - Jun 24 2011 : 9:09:52 PM I've come up with another idea for denim dresses/jumpers I'm trimming them with lace and bits of old jewerly so maybe I can resell them, I'll see how they turn out. I go to the thrift store on bag day so they don't cost so much, and I've been garage selling to find old jewerly to add and lace. I still want to do some patch quilts out of denim so we'll see how this goes. Connie

Posted - Jan 07 2011 : 8:00:27 PM I cut the legs off, sew up the open area and make a purse for my granddaughters. You can use the legs to make the strap. I add a pretty ribbon through the belt loops and fun buttons, patches or embroidery. Unique... they love them. |

Posted - Jan 04 2011 : 11:24:55 PM This is a great post... full of so many ideas for denim. I made BBQ aprons from denim for my mom and dad and they kept and used those aprons for almost 20 years!! LOL I also have made purses from old jeans, and embellished them with embroidery, beads , patches and pieces of antique doilies... my daughter loved it so much she kept it ... that was 24 years ago. Now at my local farmers market I see fancy, expensive handmade purses from... yep.. old jeans..lol. |

Posted - Jan 02 2011 : 11:45:56 PM Making quilts with old jeans is my favorite thing to do with jeans. Old jeans are also great to make pot holders with. I use two layers of jeans and a pretty fabric or homespun on the outside, bind or zig-zag stitch the edges and it makes a great potholder!

Posted - Dec 29 2010 : 8:48:37 PM I too made aprons from cast off jeans... the 1st apron was from the back(butt)of the jeans, lined it, added a ruffeled hem and ran the ties (tacked to the apron) throught the belt loops! 2nd apron I made from the upper leg(thigh)of a pair of jeans,,stitched the two legs together having the wider part as the hem, then added a ruffle & ties..... I also have made Western "Stockings" from jeans that I stuffed w/goodies for my gal pals at a Glamping trip 2 years ago....I have photos on my blogs, but you would probablly have to go back quite a few pages to find them....
