I am sooooo excited, I am working on my very 1st badge....Homespun Christmas. I do have a question tho: for the beginer level, how many handmade items do you need to make to be considered 25%? I am not able to do many ornis this year due to time (I have done a couple of them thusfar), but I am making a lot of gifts and cards for my chorus Christmas party next week (about 20 cards and 3 gifts)...plus do you want us to journal what we did/pictures?

I know this whole merit badge program is in transition and is new, but I was looking for an idea on what I needed to do to qualify for this one - Thanks Bunches :)

I saw in a magazine somewhere, where they stuff stars and made garland for the tree. It was very nice. It was plaid, plain, plaid fabrics. A metal star was on the top, look like it was made on a light tin, cut and molded around piece to put over tree limb itself. Have fun.

When I get the time, I have a list of homespun Holiday craftsto make. is't it fun imagining them on your tree?

I'm working on this badge as well. It sure is fun to make our own decorations, isn't it? I want to go cut some boughes off some ever greens to decorate my house with. Too bad my trees got butchered by the tree trimmers this year! I guess I will have to go trim from some wild trees!

Ok...I got it now :) Thanks for the "clarification" of ornament Alee...makes perfect sense. And of course 1/4 would vary from person to person...depending on how many Christmas decorations they normally use...I know a 1/4 for me would be different from someone else because I normally don't have as much in the decor department...my tree is one of those smaller trees, simple but a nice size, esp for apartment living....and hubby and I never really decorated much since we were/are in an apartment.

I am glad that I have a better idea on how to earn this badge.

I am working on this one too...I am hoping to count the Christmas throw size quilt for our living room as an "ornament". I am doing some for the tree too, at least 5, but hope that counts. I plan a quilted runner for the kitchen table too.
OOOh..Rebekka -eucalyptus sounds wonderful.

Hooray! This will be my first badge;) I am making nearly everything this year and while I have always done something handmade I have never done SOOO much- the only exception for gifts I have made this year is to buy some new organic towels and one cashmere scarf for my hubby. I have also ordered a few handmades from other farmgirls but I am obviously not counting those toward the badge. EVERY other thing is handmade by me and my littles.
I am making ornaments to add to our vintage stash, pomanders and all of our garlands are hand strung cranberry. I have already made a wreath form Eucalyptus, a swag from pine and decorated the mantle with greenery.
Warmly, Rebekka

Hi Amy!

You are asking some great questions!

The wording of the "Homespun Christmas" Badge is that you have to handmake (by you not someone else's handmades) 1/4 of you Christmas gifts AND 1/4 of your Christmas ornaments.

Dictionary.com defines ornament as: 1. an accessory, article, or detail used to beautify the appearance of something to which it is added or of which it is a part:

So anything you put up as a Christmas decoration would count towards the 1/4 mark for the ornaments, and anything you are giving would count towards the 1/4 mark for gifts. However, if you would not consider a card a "gift" normally, it does not count towards the 1/4 mark for the gifting.

Also garlands would count as ornaments.

You are the only one who can say what you would "normally" do. Use your best judgement. And be fair to yourself and to your farmgirl sisters. Have fun! I know I am having a blast working on my ornaments for the tree.

Thanks ladies. I just could not picture 1/4 of items in my head, so that is why I was thinking of the aprox numbers of items. Also, do the all have to be ornis? I thought it could be a mixture of ornis, cards and other similar gift items as long as they are homemade by you....

What we were basically thinking as to the 25% was take all the decorations that you normally would put on your tree and then make an equivalent 25% (one quarter) in new handmade items. This is where farmgirl honesty and integrity really comes into these badges. There really is no way for anyone else but yourself to know how many ornaments you would normally place on the tree. I would say to be fair to other farmgirls, though, no less than 5 ornaments. That means you would only have 20 ornaments on a tree.

For me, it's about a quarter of one of those Rubbermaid storage containers (you know, the 20 gallon ones). :D

This is TOTALLY my opinion and not the official ruling but I would think if you had enough ornaments to fill up a table top sized tree that would be about 25% of a whole tree. I would think homemade garlands with things like cranberries and popcorn would count too.
