I'm pretty excited, Farmgirls! We are still on the Reading Room, and now have our own discussions and recommendations regarding our favorite movies, documentaries, PBS series, Specials, TV shows, etc. We've had so many great Farmgirl contributions on these topics (think Downton Abbey, for example). We could just keep on rolling like the Virtual Porch does on A Farm of My Own Forum. What do you think, ladies? We can start right on this post or one of you can start a different one with your first post to it. Anyway I see it the show will go on! (Thanks, Gabe!)

I just wanted to add a few of my old time favorites, The Egg and I with Fred McMurphy and, all the Ma and Pa Kettle films, and Climb The Highest Mountian with Rory Calhoon taking place in rural GA, I cry everytime I watch it. Love old films. Karla

I just remembered a great movie that I saw on television years ago. In fact, I liked it so much that I ordered the book from Frugal Bookfinder. It's YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER. It stared Patty Duke and Richard Thomas and was quite a thriller. A young pregnant woman (Patty Duke) goes in search of her mother-in-law after her husband dies. She'd never met her husband's family, but he'd told her several times, "You'll Like My Mother." So begins her journey to her husband's childhood home to meet his wonderful mother.

I will have to look for "The Uninvited". I love scary old movies. My Rooster is a silent film nut. He loves Lon Chaney, Sr. My seven year old is in love with John Wayne. LOL

I recently found a series on Netflix called "Rosemary & Thyme". It's great! Has anyone else seen it?

I just saw this thread now! I love movies, and I'm always looking for a good tv show to watch. Right now I'm watching 30 Days on Netflix with Morgan Spurlock, the man who made SuperSize Me. It's a great series for documentary junkies.

I think "To Kill a Mockingbird" is probably the best adaptation of a novel ever filmed. I can never get enough of it. And you know what? Robert Duvall, who so memorably played Boo Radley, lives near me. He's a big supporter of historic and environmental conservation issues that I'm involved in.

Me too, Christine :) I wish I could get it on DVD. It's the perfect movie for a chilly, rainy night, hot cocoa and all that.

Annette! "The Uninvited" is one of my top three or four favorite movies! I used to watch it on TV in "olden times" with my parents. I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD. My husband recently found a vintage magazine ad for it. I mean to get it framed.

I love all the old classics. The Thin Man movies are all great. The original Sabrina with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn. Cary Grant is still one of my favorites and I'll add Philadelphia Story, Holiday, and Arsenic and Old Lace (absolutely hilarious) to the list. The Tracy/Hepburn as lawyers movie was Adam's Rib.

I love "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" and I love Jane Powell. She was such a cutie and can sing so beautifully. I like seeing her other films, too. One of my very favorite musical stars is Kathryn Grayson. Her little mouth looks like a heart so at my house we call her "Heart Lips."
She was wonderful in "Show Boat."

I am a big Cary Grant fan also. I also love Doris Day. That touch of Mink is one of my favorites since both of them are in it.

ah Darlene, "The Bishop's Wife" my favorite Cary Grant, well one of my favorites anyway
emtfarmer Posted - May 18 2012 : 6:30:35 PM
Love, love, love Cary Grant! "Bishop's Wife", "I Was a Mail Order Bride", "The Philadelphia Story". Favorite movies are from the 30's and 40's.

How about "The Women"? Not the one from a few years ago but the original from the 30's. Starred Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell. The movie has only women in it; no male actors at all! It is a B&W film, but there is a fashion show scene that is in color. Kinda cool to see both in the same movie.

I enjoy reading this post. Thanks for starting it!

Oh, yes! I do remember Debbie Reynolds in Tammy! (I also had her paper dolls)

Last night I watched all of Pride and Prejudice. How romantic. And, I finally got the message. Lovely story.

Pride and Prejudice is such a good film. I saw it quite a few times and never tire of it. I like Jane Eyre and Sense and Senseability, too.

I adore any musicals and never saw one I didn't like. I just saw "Show Boat" the one with Kathryn Grayson the other day. What a beautiful voice she had and in my house we always called her "heart lips" because her mouth is shaped like a little heart.

Well, ladies, I just broke down and picked up DVD s of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Jane Eyre. (Can you see the happy dance) Marked waaaaay down. This is the Pride and Prejudice that is on TV now. I'll probably watch that first!

If you like oldies, rent a DVD of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown"

It was produced back in the early 60's. My older girls love it!
