The thread about the book on homesteading reminded me of one of my favorites, Pioneer Women by Joanna L Stratton. It is a collection of letters written to the author's great grandmother for the purpose of writing a book. The author found them in 1975. It is called "voices from the Kansas Frontier". Unblieveable what these women went thought.

I have read some of Stephanie Whitson's books. They are good. Jeanette Oke has good ones as well. That is my favorite time period to read about!!

Here is another Nebraska author that you might enjoy, Stephanie Grace Whitson. She has several 2-3 book series that talk about womens lives in early Nebraska. She has a web site that you can read a little bio on her books it is just her whole name .com.

Thanks Rae - I have read the Bess Streeter Aldrich book, plus a couple of others of hers, but haven't read the other - have you read "No Time on My Hands"? Also a good one about a woman whose family homesteaded in Nebraska - she was an amazing quilter too

For fiction books on Pioneer women a couple good ones are A Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. If you have seen the movie A Mothers GIft on Hallmark that is based on this book. It was first copywritten in 1928. The other I found by accident is Hannah Fowler by Janice Holt Giles, first out in 1956. They are pretty basic and I think pretty realistic of what life was like, quite hard. Just a FYI if anyone is interested.
