For those of you who recognize the name as a children's book author/illustrator...you're correct. But if you don't know anything about her you should check out some of the very interesting books about her lifestyle and gardens. She is living in Vt, practicing the old ways of doing nearly everything and even wears period clothing as her everyday wear. I saw her Gardens book yesterday at B&N and just fell in love with it! A truly unique and original gentle spirit. It's like a trip without the travel and you're all the better for having visited!

You can reach her at:
Tasha Tudor and Family
PO Box 503
Marlboro, Vermont, 05344

Her daughter-in-law & grandson essentially run the office at this address, but they live within walking distance of each other (connected by paths in the woods!), and I'm sure the personal mail gets to her eventually :)

I'm so glad to hear Tasha Tudor is still alive. Does anyone know how old she is now? I've read everything by her and about her. What an enchanted life she lives. She's my inspiration for the country life.

Ok Bramble, now I am really jealous! Celia Thaxter is one whom I would have loved to have had tea with in her garden. I grow red poppies because of her. A trip to Isle of SHoals is also on my dream list!

Roxana, WOW, what a thrill that must of been to walk up on Tasha arranging flowers in one of her favorite spots it sounds like, what a rememberable experience, how lucky are you!! I can see her there as you wrote about it, and hopefully one day I too will be able to meet that special lady, and Mary Jane too, both women rank high on my hero list!

Julia-- Here's another common thread: I know who Celia Thaxter is and have been to Isle of Shoals and the gardens that are recreations of hers... Heavenly! I dream of this place at the strangest times, it's like it's almost become a part of me. I loved it!

Oh SHerridale,How I envy you! I would love to go sometime. I have been a Tasha fan for a very long time! I have several of the books she has illustrated, but only two she has written and illustrated- Amanda and The Bear and a small hard copy of First Graces. My Mom just gave me Tasha Tudor's Garden for a housewarming gift this spring. There is also a cassette version of Take Joy, that I love, as you can hear her speak. She has such a unique voice. I love her simplicity of living.
I too, love Marcia Adam's. I was raised in Mennonite country here in Oregon. The Mennonite church we attended had wonderful cooks. I have a couple of favorite recipes from them that I use often.
I love seeing the familiar thread that seems to travel through us all!

The Take Joy & Take Peace videos are gems...if you're a thoughtful gardener, or just one of those folks who feel they were born 100 years too late, these documentaries will speak to you!

Just a quick little addendum to my note about my garden tour experience. At the end of our 'self-guided' tour of her grounds, we were supposed to meet at her barn, where she was to come out and greet us briefly. However, beforehand my Mom and I stumbled across her privately on a little patio/alcove adjoining her house...she was arranging flowers! I'll never forget our private little audience with her...she was wonderful. Laying eyes on her was like seeing a painting come to life. What a beautiful human being she is!

Any library (even the tiny rural ones) can get books and videos on Interlibrary Loan. Larger libraries usually don't charge for this service, but our tiny library here charges me $2 a book. Still cheaper than buying. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to get a book: depends where it is coming from and if that library has it checked out at the moment. But if a book or video is at some library in the world, you can get it at your library.

I just returned from a tour of the Tudor(s) garden as well! All I can say is having been a fan and devotee for years, actually seeing her at her home amidst that dreamlike garden was an experience of mythical proportions. To say it has changed my life would be an understatement. It's all I could do to think of how I could live my life as simply and beautifully from that day forward...

Wow, I had never heard of Tasha Tudor, but I saw her name on the post and recognised it later at an old farmhouse I am nannying at. They have a whole shelf of Tasha Tudor books!!! When I looked up the prices of some of these books the following day, I decided my hands should be real clean before I go and pick one up to peruse through again. But, they are within reach of an unappreciating toddler, maybe I'll let them in on the little secret of their books' worth (after I've had the chance to peak through them...I'm afraid they'll disappear!) I'm sketching some of the patterns into my notebook and copying a couple of recipes. What a jewel to have discovered!

Kim,
I have Marcia Adams' cookbooks too! My mom knew her before she got famous.

Yes, I agree Bramble... I think I'm living in a time warp too.... at least compared to most of society... and it IS quite comforting. We all just have to find our own definition of our comfort zone for the time warp! And Tasha has succeeded at this BIG time!

Clare-- When I first learned about her many years ago I thought what an eccentric and slightly kooky way to live. As I've aged I look at it a little differently. She has created the world she wishes to live in and removes herself from the mundane and soul defeating advances of our times. Her world is of her making and when she let's us in she's saying" See ... you seek a safe haven too..."( even if it is only for a brief time). If the truth be known , wouldn't we all like to wave our magic wands and make our lives how we perceive "perfect"?
I think for whatever reason her choosing is to remain childlike and
removed from the "world " in sort of a pleasant time warp. Just my take on things, however!

I just watched the video "Take Joy!" yesterday. It is very interesting and nice to see her gardens and animals and to listen to her thoughts and ideas and see her art work. She seems to live in a bit in a fantasy world that she's created, but in these times that is probably so much better than what's "out there". Maybe I'll start doing that... heck, maybe I already do!!

I'm a huge Tasha Tudor fan! My ultimate dream is to live the way she does. Sherridale ~ How wonderful to do the garden tours! I so wanted to go, but none of the dates worked for me. I got to meet Tasha a couple summers ago at an Adams Family Farm day with Tasha Tudor. We had so much fun, including making wonderful skin cream with Rosemary Gladstar, watching Kate Smith dye wool, and listening to Margory Tudor read Corgiville Christmas about a year before it was published!

For those who are interested, the Tudor family have a great website where you can learn more about Tasha and order her books or handcrafts and art by other family members. www.tashatudorandfamily.com
