Posted - Sep 07 2015 : 10:41:48 AM I'm shy, so it took me a long time to say hello. I live with my husband, and the youngest of my five (homeschooled) children. My oldest works on a farm out of state. She's bringing up a pig soon to add to our menagerie of sheep and poultry. Our neighbors buy poultry from us to butcher on their own, and next year they are looking to purchase our lambs as well. I work off the farm, and also volunteer at the local jail. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you. |

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 5:20:39 PM Callene-Tennessee is so beautiful, I'd love to see it some day. Your family history is interesting and I loved that goat story! Your poor Mom must have been so shocked! Yes, I think you should write about those times. I miss our goats but the youngest got jobs and was no longer available to milk and we couldn't fit in milking and cheese making without her. I find the sheep calmer and really appreciate that. |

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 5:13:34 PM Ninibini-I know what you mean, meals are so much easier with just the two of us. Our only one at home is a vegetarian so cooking for her can be a challenge. But these days, her fiancé is always taking her out to eat. We are about 45 minutes from Scranton, if you have ever heard of that. Near Lake Wallenpaupack, maybe you have heard of that? Its cool that your son enjoys discussing his days with you, that you are all that close. |

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 10:57:01 AM Welcome Andrea.I had a micro farm for a bit, garden included.Sounds like you have a good business going for yall.My folks settled in your state at first. They were wiped out by the flu and my grandfather moved to Tenn and met my grandmother.God works in mysterious ways.We would not have come to be if not for tragedy.Hmmmm wonder if that is why my life is so tragic, because it was forged upon tragedy.Wow,never thought of it that way.But hardships make for strong character.Or so I have heard.LOL.I worked with lamb a bit, they are stubborn skiddish things.Kinda like goats. But not as crazy.LOL.We had some crazy goats growing up.One actually saved our lives as young children. The house caught on fire.I placed an etch a sketch on the heater. We let the goat sleep with us,against our mom's wishes. While mom was at work.It was a two room farm house/shack.Living/bedroom and a kitchen. The goat jumped on us til we got up.My sister put out the fire and we sat on the porch sooty waiting for our mom to come home from the graveyard shift at a clamp factory. We are lucky the house did not explode the heater was gas and now that I think of it my sister probably put out the pilot light.WOW,God sure knows his business.Right?Well going to go coupon with my daughter now.Have a marvelous day.Oh the goats name was Sugar, cause she always got in and ate the sugar bags open.LOL.I should write a book about our Tenn escapades.LOL.

Posted - Sep 23 2015 : 07:13:33 AM Oh! WOW!!! Andrea - I just love Pittsburgh! What a small world!!! Where is Hawley?
I'm thrilled for my son, and have been so busy here since homeschool ended that I really haven't had time to miss it! LOL! My son's still at home while attending school, so that probably makes the transition a bit easier. I just love when he comes home, tells us all about his day, discusses his classes with us, etc. And now that he's at school, he pretty much takes care of his own meals during the week, so my husband and I are thoroughly enjoying foods we haven't had in years due to our picky eater kid! LOL! Now I just have to decide what I want to do with the rest of my life. I really thought things would quiet down and come to a complete halt once we finished homeschool, but it's quite the opposite! :) It's good to know I still have a purpose! LOL!

Posted - Sep 21 2015 : 5:47:09 PM How are you adjusting to your son being in college-do you miss homeschooling? Seems to be a wide range in how colleges view homeschooling. I lived in many different neighborhoods in Pittsburgh-love that city! |

Posted - Sep 11 2015 : 07:00:47 AM DoriTroutman- I've never had fresh lamb. This year will be our first time butchering. One of our boys is dating the daughter of a taxidermist/hunting guide so he is teaching us how to butcher lamb in exchange for meat. Our neighbors are originally from a village in Eastern Europe. Wish I could communicate better with the Grandma. She still dresses the old way and must be a fount of knowledge! |

Posted - Sep 11 2015 : 05:30:38 AM Hello Andrea,
Welcome to MaryJanesFarm! Two funny things: my daughter's name is Andrea and she also home schools their children! :-)
Your farm sounds perfect... what a deal for your neighbors to be able to buy their poultry from you for harvest. And fresh lamb meat? Oh my word, there is nothing like it. I grew up on lamb in New Mexico and somedays I really miss it.
Big farmgirl hugs to you!

Posted - Sep 10 2015 : 6:38:09 PM Not sure; sometimes they talk of wishing they had gone to PS so they could have had more friends - not always guaranteed. Hopefully they will grow to appreciate the benefits of HS as they mature - they are 23, 20, 14, and 5. My 14 yr old just said yes he would, yeah!
I love HS too! I will surely miss it when it is over.
I don't have much sewing skill either; I taught myself to quilt a few years ago and just keep collecting beautiful fabric with hopes of having time in the future to use it!

Posted - Sep 10 2015 : 04:28:57 AM dena91-sorry, I don't buy fabric cause I am lousy at any craft! Hoping becoming a farmgirl will change that? I miss homeschooling. Do you think your grandchildren will be homeschooled? |

Posted - Sep 10 2015 : 04:22:23 AM Song Sparrow, For some reason, I just felt right at home when I drove up to the jail. It is no big thing on my part and a highlight of my week. We study parenting, budgeting, anger management, etc. We made cards for a nursing home. Anybody have ideas, please share. Many are in for drugs. Heroin hitting rural areas badly. |
