Posted - Oct 26 2006 : 08:39:03 AM I'm Susan. I'm a homebody and a newly discovered "farmgirl" in northwest Indiana. I found MaryJane's magazine at Borders and am excited to discover a wonderful resource. I am a single mom of a 16 year old son, who is also a homebody but not a farmboy! I'm a special ed. teacher for children with severe disabilities. I picked up the magazine to look at the aprons. I wear one at school so I can use the pockets for picture communication symbols, markers, stickers, treats, and more. When time allows it will be great to make up some things that will be attractive and functional. I love the bakeover recipe and can't wait to try it. I use convenience food heavily, and this looks like something I can adapt for my pizza loving son. When time allows, I love to write, read, sew or knit, especially putting bits and pieces to good use. The article on the old mill caught my eye. A restored mill near me grinds cornmeal in replica flour sacks. When the cornmeal is cooked, I use the bags in quilts. I recently found a bag of vintage quilt blocks that I'll put together some day! Latest project is knitting hats and scarves for the mitten tree at the library. I'm looking forward to making connections with other "farmgirls!" |

Posted - Nov 10 2006 : 10:59:49 AM Welcome, Susan !
I love the fact that you wear and utilize your aprons in the classroom. What a great idea. I'm a nurse, myself. I wonder if I could get away with wearing an apron in the hospital (I doubt it) ........it would certainly be a convenient way (and much prettier than the scrubs) to carry around the alcohol wipes, tape, cotton balls, baby bath, etc.
Enjoy the fun times here.

If you're going to walk on thin ice, you might as well danse. |

Posted - Nov 09 2006 : 7:50:04 PM Well, I guess I should say it's my dh who does the demonstrating at Buckley and the kids and I just add to the scenery. LOL This year we did Tinsmithing. This is after a 6 year break as my dh injured himself at work. Pervious to this he did the blacksmithing there. He kind of trained the current blacksmith who was just a kid at the time so he hated to come back and take over what this kid who is now an adult has been doing these last 6 years. This year we kind of demonstrated last minute so our set up was lacking but next year we will be more prepared. ALso they are talking of having a blacksmith out at the cabin so my dh may do that. I usually keep up with the kids and work on knitting socks or tatting.
Just let me know the time and place for a meeting! I am from the Hebron area. I suppose it would be a little wierd if we all walked into borders with our farmgirl aprons on so we could recognize each other! Especially up there in Merrillville! |

Posted - Nov 09 2006 : 12:18:28 AM I'm from NW Indidna too! I haven't checked the MJ site in a while as life has gotten in the way a bit but I love the site! You all mentioned Buckley Homestead in Lowell. My family does demonstrations there! I'm sure our paths must have crossed at some point! It's lovely to meet birds of a feather! |

Posted - Nov 05 2006 : 7:51:52 PM Hey Susan, I have a small local show in a week, mostly a WAHM's (Work At Home Mom) thing. That one is mostly for exposure in the area. Then in a few weeks I have a bigger show in Dekalb, IL a few hours from home. I set up my display today for a trial run...hubby & boys told me it was "very impressive". Hope others think so! I think I am going to try doing Buckley next year-maybe spring. My things would probably go well there. Hey, did someone mention coffee? ;) Rhonda

Posted - Nov 03 2006 : 8:56:06 PM Hellloooo, I'm still here! Just haven't been online for a bit as I am getting ready for an art show. Been painting & staining allll day! My hands are brown. Susan, Kathy sounds like you both have a bit of spinning experience! I used to belong to a fiber guild-years ago. I am a weaver, but dabbled in spinning & felt making. I bet we can think of something to chat about! ;) It would be great fun to meet up sometime! Anyplace with books & coffee can't be bad! Rhonda

Posted - Oct 31 2006 : 4:43:10 PM Rhonda and Kathy, I live in Hobart and work in Highland. My son takes oboe lessons in Valpo. Kathy, I wonder if our paths have crossed. I always watch the spinners at the festivals. I knit and experimented some with a drop spindle but never got farther than that. Regret missing both the Chesterton and Lowell festivals this year. Rhonda-I look forward to checking out your website. |

Posted - Oct 31 2006 : 08:17:26 AM Hi ladies. I was reading this forum this morning and I found your quote Marybeth about life not being the party we hoped for, but while we are here we may as well dance. I just loved that, but just yesterday I was talking to this older lady in my complex and she shared with me the time she almost drowned in a big river. She heard a voice telling her to relax and float. After hearing it several times she did as instructed. She finally floated to shore but when she got out of the water she was nearly frozen. She heard that voice again telling her to "dance". It was a struggle but she eventually started to dance and by doing that her body began to warm and she and her dog walked to safety. Isn't it just like Him to tell us to dance when we are in such trouble? Thank you for that quote Marybeth. JOY

Posted - Oct 30 2006 : 6:39:52 PM The last 2 years I haven't volunteered much, but before that I did the spinning at the Bailey Homestead for the Duneland Harvest Festival, and I've been with the spinning group out at Buckley Homestead too. I love to do that, but just don't seem to have the time.
I live just southwest of Demotte, and I work in Valparaiso, so I cut a path through NW Indiana every day! Kathy |

Posted - Oct 30 2006 : 5:16:47 PM Hi ladies, I was just out at Buckley a few weeks ago photographing the barns, sheep & pioneer cabin. I may use some of the photos on my website. It was very lovely to walk out in the back forty on a sunny fall day! OK, so...can I ask where exactly you ladies are? I'm near Lowell. How funny if we turn out to be neighbors! Rhonda

Posted - Oct 30 2006 : 4:06:45 PM Kathy, we most definitely like to hang out in the same places! I volunteered one summer at the fur trader cabin at the Bailly homestead. I checked out the new Borders over the weekend. It's quite impressive. I'm proud I resisted the temptation to buy any new books to add to my staggering piles around the house. Maybe there's enough of us in the area to start a group? |

Posted - Oct 29 2006 : 12:28:58 PM Candace and Rhonda-great to know we're in the same area. It'll be good to compare notes on living the farmgirl lifestyle in Indiana.
Rhonda-yes it is Woods Mill at Deep River Park. The cornmeal is sold in the mill at the front counter-not the gift shop. It's sometimes under the counter so you have to ask for it. Unfortunately, I think this is their last weekend til May. |

Now, I must ask where this restored mill is!? :) Is it the one at Deep River Park? My cousin got married there a few years ago. It was just lovely! Sounds like you will have a lot to contribute to the group! Looking forward to getting to know you better Susan! Rhonda
