Posted - Dec 04 2006 : 6:33:29 PM Beemoosie - I am going to have to tell my dad that one (at 80 years old I dont think he cant get his tractor in the back without taking the cap off ) but this is the first year he didnt cover with a blanket in the garage (his john deer may get cold) and its the one thing I know my nephew with fight for when dad passes on - they joke about how Michael will get the John Deere when he dies.....

Posted - Dec 03 2006 : 10:22:33 AM Hi Kelly, so nice to meet you! I am about an hour from the area you grew up in. It is beautiful around here. Just a few weeks ago I went to see a play in Lancaster, NY. They turn their village into a lovely little Christmas town. I have met your sister quite a bit here on the forums too! So glad to know both of you! Keep me updated on your farm search! Hugs, Bonnie

Posted - Dec 03 2006 : 10:07:45 AM Hi Bonnie! I am a newbie on here as well & I love moose too. I also grew up in NY... just outside of Buffalo. Lived in Cheektowaga, Glenview, & moved here to TX from Amherst. We have been here for 11 years now. A lot of my family & in-laws still live there. I do miss it tremendously! Especially at this time of year & in the fall for apple picking. We try to visit when we can. We have thought of moving back home to start our farm life there. We are also thinking of doing that in Colorado. My sister lives there. She's a farmgirl too---lilpunkin. Whichever the Lord leads us to, I will be happy. I will just enjoy having family nearby.

Posted - Nov 28 2006 : 3:15:14 PM Hi ladies,
Sorry I haven't had a chance to check in until this evening. You might be interested in looking here: http://www.localharvest.org/ for CSA information. We've owned shares for a number of years and really enjoy the food and the community!
And yes, this weather has been absolutely wonderful :-) what a lovely holiday weekend it was. It looks like our luck is about to change this coming weekend however... |

Posted - Nov 28 2006 : 06:13:38 AM Thank you, Amie! I had never heard of CSA before, it sounds great. I will have to check out and see if I can find someone who participates around here, it sounds like a good experience for our family. Our Thanksgiving was wonderful! We had the great weather, also. We are about 20 miles South of Rochester. I even did more yardwork Friday! Bonnie

Posted - Nov 28 2006 : 06:06:59 AM Hey, did you guys find out what a CSA is? I just checked back in on this thread (I'm a WNY-er too, so I want to see what's up).
In case you didn't find out somewhere else, it stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It's when people sign up and pay one lump sum in the early spring to get fresh vegetables from a farm all year. Usually you have to pick them up at certain times and locations once a week, and sometimes the farm requires that you put in some hours helping them in the fields over the course of the season.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving (60 degrees in Rochester this weekend!) |

Posted - Nov 28 2006 : 05:50:21 AM Hi Becky, Yeah, we were waiting for my dad to bring his John Deere M over last night (my daughter thinks M stands for her name Marie, she LOVES that tractor) Dad called and said he was heading over at 3:00. Perfect, we didn't have to leave here until 5:00 to get to my daughter's basketball game. 4:30 comes along, and I'm a little worried, so I call his cell phone. He was at a CAR WASH cleaning the tractor up before he brought it over!!!! Men and their toys....I don't know why my husband thinks I have a quilting problem... Hugs, Bonnie

Posted - Nov 27 2006 : 4:23:17 PM Hi Bonnie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know what CSA was! :) This weather is soooo nice for November. We better enjoy it while we can, right? I had relatives up from Florida for Thanksgiving and they were disappointed that we didn't have any snow. My husband likes plowing with his John Deere better than with the plow on his truck. I think we're ready for any snow - plow on the truck, log splitter on the back of the tractor for counter-weight, garage bays empty, ready for cars to park in there. Now for the Christmas preparations....oh boy! But actually I love Christmas; it's my favorite!! Take care, Julie |

Posted - Nov 27 2006 : 11:55:26 AM Hey ladies! Wasn't it a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend? I will take this weather in NY ANY time! I am kind of an ignorant wanna be farm girl, what is CSA? My dad probably knows, he grew up on a farm. Still loves his John Deeres. He is bringing one over to our house now. We keep it in the garage and my husband plows with it all winter. He love that! Have a great day ladies!! Bonnie

Posted - Nov 26 2006 : 5:23:47 PM Hello laluna! So nice to hear from another Western New Yorker! Where south of Buffalo do you live? I, too, felt like the only Easterner for a while. It's great to see that more are joining. I guess you really do just need to be a farmgirl at heart. It's really nice talking to other women who feel the same as you. I know this is probably a dumb question, but what is a CSA? Julie |

Posted - Nov 24 2006 : 1:49:46 PM Just popping in to say hello and welcome to all, and a special "hey there" to my fellow WNY-ers NanaJulie and Beemoosie! I also live south of Buffalo - it seems like there are quite a few Central and WNY-ers around here now, which is nice. For a long while I felt like one of the only "easterners" on the boards, with so many people posting from the plains and the mid-west. At any rate, I myself am more of a farmgirl in spirit - we don't grow our own food, but do belong to a CSA which happens to be owned and run by friends of ours, so I feel pretty good about that. :-) |

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 06:02:57 AM I will definitely check out the stitching room. Besides the scarf (which I did start yesterday, yeah!), I also plan to start a cape for one my granddaughters and curtains for a spare bedroom. I always have lots of plans, but not lots of time; we'll see how far I get. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! |

Posted - Nov 21 2006 : 05:48:40 AM NanaJulie, Can you believe what people throw away!? I need to keep my eyes open to all the shops around here...see what I can come up with! Nope, never run into a live moose around this part of NY! But my house, and now my yard seem to have a few...or more! Also, go to the stitching room forum and you will find alot of knitters. I took a class and learned to knit a scarf last year, but I don't know how to finish it!!! My sister in law visits ME every summer, she brings me goodies from the Mangy Moose in Freeport Maine. Maybe when the kids are grown we will take the trip with them. Oh Nancy! You keep me laughing! Have a lovely Thanksgiving, gals!

Posted - Nov 20 2006 : 06:52:15 AM Hi Everyone, I've been out of town for a week, missed all of you! That moose is cute. I'm pretty sure we don't have any here in Western New York. I have a friend you also collects them. Does anyone here knit? I'm going to start a ribbed scarf today for a Christmas present for my son's girlfriend, can't wait. We have a knitting group that meets at lunchtime. I haven't had a project in a while, so I'm excited.
Hi Beemoosie, I have several salt & pepper shakers, some that I think are pretty old. And we have a variety of John Deere things. That is the tractor we have and my husband really loves his tractor. :) So people are always giving us John Deere stuff. With a new grandson on the way, I may have to get him a John Deere bib or booties or something. I forgot to mention when we were talking about fabric that next to my work is an Interior Decorator's showroom, open only to "the trade", the decorators themselves. They often throw out (what a sin!) their fabric samples. Well, several of us in my office watch for it and snatch it up when they do. I just can't resist it. I thought I'd make some throw pillows. One woman made a wallhanging. Can't let that good fabric go to waste, ha ha.
