I guess you could say I'm "new" but I'm really not at all THAT new. I have always had a farmgirl hidden deep inside me - even while growing up on the "Mistake on the Lake". Somehow, I ended up in Idaho in 1998 leasing land just shy of 2 acres and raising Jacob sheep and a few culled ewes (they make great babies), goats (Pygmy and Alpine Swiss), some piggies, chickens, and loving a donkey named Sally. Now we live up in "the Orchards" which isn't all that great but we still aren't in the "big" city. I have some unusual views on simplicity, "organic" stuff, animals, and life. I still can't figure out why no one likes my "proof of need" concept for owning a truck. And, I'm one of those people that believes you don't use food to decorate. Food is food. You eat it. AAAHHH . . .the country has changed me so.

From Cleveland to Idaho - what a ride!

Welcome Diane! This is a great place!! And I have to say...I'm yet another truck gal! Mines just passing 230,000 miles, leaking oil and sometimes no heat but what would I do without it??? I need that extra room to haul more animals home!!! (my husband would disagree! LOL)

Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Welcome Diane, I always thought I might like to retire to Lewiston, spring comes so early down along the river. I have seen some wonderful gardens up there. Sounds like you fit right in here. I guess I will just have to find ways of living that justify always having a pickup. Hate to drive cars. I am thinking about getting a pony and cart.

Greetings from the morning side of the hill.

Diane, Welcome--there are truly not enough hours in the day. I have been retired for over 7 years now, and I haven't done much of what I intended to do!!!!

Thank you all for your wonderful greetings! My blank-blank 'puter has been giving me a really hard time these days and I now have a slight disagreement going on with Qwest. Lord knows how much I really dislike 'puters anyway but it's been really tense lately. To answer a few questions and reply to a few comments:

1. "Proof of need" for trucks. Prior to the late 70s/darly 80s, you didn't see many trucks on the road other than those used for "work" - construction, plumbing, farming, etc. Then, some weird thing happened. Everyone was suddenly buying trucks. They needed them to haul their "toys" around, to pack home huge purchases, etc. Now, one sees wee little woman-childs driving around in huge trucks that they need ladders to get into. I suggested a "proof of need" title for trucks to one of our politicians when gas prices hit $3.00 a gallon. He gave me one of those "crazy lady" looks. But, if you think about it, it makes a bit of sense. (No hate letters on this one, please.)

2. Cleveland. When my mom passed in 2000, I went back to Cleveland and the Cleveland I knew and loved just wasn't there anymore. My vision of Cleveland is "A Christmas Story" Cleveland. The movie was filmed there and I that is how I will always envision it. I don't like going to any "big" cities anymore and detest "traffic" greatly.

3. Although we are retired and no longer raise anything other than chaos (4 dogs, 2 cats, 1 daughter, 1 husband x 976 sq ft of living space), I still miss our sheep, goats, chickens, etc. but, especially, our donkey greatly. If we were younger, we would still be at it - it is a life of complete satisfaction even when times are tight.

4. Lewiston. We came here to "retire" as my husband had ranched near Cottonwood in the 70s with his first family. I love it here even when the temps soar over 100 degrees. Unfortunately, Lewiston is changing in ways we don't care for - more big name stores, more people moving here from the Sound/Portland/California areas. And, unfortunately, they are bringing what and why we left the Sound - congestion, traffic, higher prices, etc. And, people are getting crabby. BUT, it's still a wonderful place to live. You may have to look in the other direction more these days, but the other direction is just as nice to look at as the one you turned your head from. Now, if the powers could just justify the why behind a super WalMart than I would be more OK with a new one coming in. Oh, and why they are building it right next door to a Costco. Explain it logically and I'll be fine. But, my life is good, simple, warm, and satisfying. I only lack more hours in the day to do all I want to do in life.

A big warm welcome to you Diane! I was in Lewiston making my way to McCall this summer! I was in a caravan with Grace-katmom and others to McCall for a Sisters on the Fly gathering! Lewiston is such a beautiful town!

Diane

Another sheep lady says hello and welcome. Love that proof of need idea on the truck. I keep a small pick up for hauling only what won't fit in the Hyndai Santa Fe. Cheers!

Of all the cities I've lived in, Cleveland is my favorite! My "mistake" was leaving there! But, like you, I'm SO happy to be out in the country now.

Welcome Diane from another newbie. I also raise sheep and I don't think you should decorate with food either. As to the truck - I never could understand having one in the middle of Seattle or LA unless you are a landscaper or construction person - a lot of wasted gas for making a statement. I have one used to haul hay or wood but drive my mini-van for everything else.

Cheryl, I've hauled lambs in the back of my previous vehicle mini-SUV! What a clean-up that was! You make-do as a farmgirl no matter what you drive.

Hi Diane and welcome from Wisconsin! Nice to meet you and I hope you love this site. I've only been here a bit over a month and just love it. MANY times I've wished I had a pick up, although my Blazer and Minivan do pretty well in a pinch. I've shoved a sofa in the back of the minivan...laffin'. Welcome aboard!

Welcome Diane. Ha, my fil was a trucker and he also said pickups were not trucks! Everyone calls them that tho, so oh well, lol You have to have a truck to haul all that farmgirl stuff!

I own a truck and I live in the city. I wanted a truck for hauling stuff and the fact that it sits up high enough so that I am not looking at lug nuts while at stoplights. It is a small truck, but has 4WD and I still love it, not necessarily the gas mileage. I'm going to try to wait this gas thing out before I get a car, so maybe I can have both. HEE HEE.

Diane, welcome from Georgia! Got a truck, too. Can't afford to drive it, though!! It might get 3 miles to the gallon. It's one of those that whenever you get near a station, you better pull in. We use it to haul hay and grain and critters.

Hey Diane. Welcome and thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. I raise sheep too so we have that in common. Also the proof of need thing I think I understood...if you don't need it, don't buy/have it? Loved the Mistake on the Lake comment. Too funny how clarity comes along and bites us in the behind on some of the choices we've made but...gotta try things before you know!

I too drive a pickup (my ex who is a trucker tells me pickups are NOT "trucks" )...still love it and hope it lasts another 147,500 miles.

Look forward to getting to know you better. Like your name. Me too on the crazy and the yarn but I'm not yet 102...getting there though.
