Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!
As of 6:36pm, October 16, we are at 102 pages, 1516 posts. Go crazy, mavens, go crazy – like anyone has to tell us that! This newsletter and the next will still be covering topics from the first month. After that….well, we’ll see. We’ve covered a lot of ground in that first month. For Mother Hen’s Musings I thought it would be interesting to include some clips from Mama Dawn’s first posts. See if you can pick out a common theme. So pull up a chair, get that cup of chamomille tea and enjoy.
Mother Hen’s Musings September 10, 2008 – 4:48pm “We have the woman power to be heard and seen….my 80+ year old grandpa swears that we, as a nation, are going to have to step backwards before we can advance anymore. That we are facing some serious consequences if we don’t take hard look at what’s going on in our environment.”
September 11, 2008 – 7:54 am “How many strong are we? 500? 600? If 25% of us are exchanging seed that's a 150-ish heirloom plants that might not have been out there in the first place.”
September 12, 2008 – 2:24pm “Oh my Rene, what have we started?? Can you see us in a restaurant? Pulling hamburgers out of patrons mouths asking them..."DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR TOMATOS COME FROM?" Seriously, together we can be heard.”
September 15, 2008 – 9:43am “You girls are beyond amazing. I cant think of an adjective strong enough to encompass what I think of you!”
September 16, 2008 – 8:18am “So I'm telling you now ladies, it pays to have big mouths!! Make it a point to talk or read heirlooms everyday….”
**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****
New Mavens If you haven’t had a chance yet, please welcome our two mavens: Denise (levisgrammy) – initial post October 15 – http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=95 Betty (Betty J.) – initial post October 15 – http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=96
Ladies, we are so glad to have you join in. Remember to check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582 and The Mavens Haven newsletter http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25790 And of course, the Danger of Extinction thread (DOE) is the place for questions and chatting.
**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****
The Nest Box Our Mother Hen (Dawn) has set up a cozy little nest in the henhouse where she will be laying her eggs filled with gardening tips, tidbits and treasures. She laid an egg the first day she nested in her box! Check it out: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=636
Maven Christmas Exchange It may be October but Christmas will be here before we know it. Wouldn’t it be fun to get a garden goodie from a fellow maven? Here is a link to Dawn’s description post http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=93 and a link to the latest update (as of October 16, 6:29am) http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=100 If you miss getting in on the first round of number picking, QMD (Queen Maven Dawn) is making sure that no one who wants to participate will be left out so just send her an e-mail and she will take care of you.
Friendship Gardens Some of us are probably still putting our gardens to bed but it’s never to early to think about next year. How about adding a Friendship Garden to your plans?
“Since you all mean so much to me, I want to plant a "friendship garden". Each of you will tell me what you love (flower or herb wise) and I will plant it in my garden. Neat dontcha think?” Dawn (Pg 52 of DOE thread)
“I want to do the friendship garden when I get moved to Idaho, why don't everyone trade their fav flower/herb that way you actually have the flower from the person. Most people have their fav planted in their garden already. Just a thought. I will send you in the spring a start of an OLD lilac that I love, I also love iris. and ........hollyhocks you know, all those sweet old timey flowers, lily of the valley, violets, oh I could go on and on,hehehe” Teresa Sue (Pg 52 of DOE thread)
Sisterhood of the Traveling Patchwork Pillow “Wouldn't it be nice to make up a package of MJ's Heirloom Maven things...patch, bumpersticker, some seeds maybe and anything else we think up along the way ...our favorite nail polish heehee, and be able to give it to MaryJane at BBB?” With this post, Annika set in motion plans to present our MaryJane with a basket of goodies from the mavens. One of the special items to be included is a patchwork pillow with a 3X3-inch square created by each of the mavens. To read more on Dawn’s inspirational idea and begin planning your square, go to http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=551&whichpage=1
MJ’s Heirloom Mavens Badges Teresa Sue is still looking for input on the design of our mavens badge. If you haven’t chimed in yet, here’s the link: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=612 If you would like to work toward the Beginner Farm Kitchen badge with the HMBC mavens, here is what you need to do: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1 Since journaling is part of the Farm Kitchen Badge requirements, if you would like to also work on the Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude badge (it also involves journaling), read about it here: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=637
And Teresa Sue, thank you for all of the work you put in organizing and “badgering” us. You rock, maven!

We are currently discussing the first two chapters of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. You can follow the discussion at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=597 in the henhouse or in the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556 Remember this book is one of the requirements for the Farm Kitchen “Know Your Food” Beginner Level badge. See the Teresa Sue’s “Badge Alert!!!!” post for more info: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1
Small Town Living Have you ever thought about making your own cheese? It isn’t as hard as you think! Check out the article in Small Town Living, the online magazine produced by Tina (Tina Michelle) and her husband, at www.stliving.net
Save Our Seeds – Feed Our Future The Heirloom Mavens Save Our Seeds – Feed Our Future bumper stickers are now available. For more information, go to the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582
PayPal is Your Pal In addition to purchasing the above mentioned bumper stickers, did you realize you can also use PayPal to purchase a bee-u-tiful farmgirl bracelet created by our Mama Hen? And did you realize that she graciously is donating the profits from said bracelet to the Maven Seed & Sisterhood Fund? AND did you realize that if you have some spare change laying around that you don’t know what to do with (hey! It’s possible) you can donate it to the Fund and it will be put toward a scholarship fund for Honorary Heirloom Mavens? If not, check out an autumnal(!) bracelet at www.gypsycowgirlcreations.blogspot.com then use our PayPal account to purchase one. For information on the scholarship fund, click here: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=89
**** FUTURE ATTRACTIONS ****
Guess who’s coming to PBS…… Can’t say right now but I have it on good authority (i.e. Rene) that when details become available, they will be posted for the mavens a.s.a.m.p.
Heirloom Minor at Farmgirl U Rene (prosserfarmgirl) is currently working on developing a program for those who would like to minor in heirloom gardening at the Farmgirl University. Be watching for more information in the henhouse.
Seed-swapping As we put our gardens to bed and begin planning for next season, visions of new seeds to plant for next year dance in our heads.
