Here is another idea. What about if we find out what little knick knacky things we all collect and then when we see something at a yardsale or flea market etc we pick up a small collection of things to send on to those who collect them. Just an example, I collect cocker spaniel stuff - could be a vintage photograph or a little statue - We could set a price limit but I don't think it is necessary. I have to tell you many of my treasures were curbside finds.

I would love to know what you all collect, what makes your heart go pitty pat when you see it?

Also it would be wonderful to have a collection of things to send to someone who has had surgery or is ill - I know The Soap Maven is going to be out with surgery for a bit - perhaps we could all round robin her a card?

I am open to ideas - gee, I have not even had coffee this am and am on a roll - lol, later I will be too pooped to pop. If you smell smoke today - it is me....

Kathy,
I know you have been very busy, but just wanted to know if you did create a list of our collections or a place for us to post them like you were hoping to...let us know when you get a chance!

Have been thinking of you and am hoping all is well!

Hi all,
I was thinking myself that it would be interesting to know what others collect, so I did a search and came up with this!
Like Teddie, I collect thimbles, any kind, I have some ceramic, pewter, silver. I also collect teapots and anything chicken themed. But my favourite collection is my snowmen - anything snowman; so far, mainly ornament type snowmen, but I also have a snowman head shaped mug and some candles. I would really love some snowmen tea towels, none here in Australia. The snowmen I collect are more rustic looking than really glittery.
Best wishes and keep dreaming,
Jayne

I collect seeral things. I like the tins, like Quaker oats, crackers, cracker jack. Sheep, especialy primitive. Raggedy annies amd primitive dolls, and little chairs to put them in. I have a small collection of really old KY postcards. Enamelware, baskets, treenware. I also love when I order a prim or country home decor piece, and they come tied in a package with little srtips of homespun. I use those little strips of homespun and just tie them to various items sitting around or hanging on my walls. I would love to be in on this, and have a list.

I just love these exchanges!!! They are so neat and give a chance to get to know eachother even better!!!!
A lot of what I collect may not be usual fair at garage sales and such (can't remember it has been sooo long ) but I love teddy bears that are made from meterial scraps or not, that look old and loved or just oldfashioned looking that could sit in an old rocking chair and "fit", I love dolls that are in good shape that would fit in with teddys rag dolls and older looking ones from like the 70s and back, I love serving pieces in white and/or greens or pinks, or pastel colors or clear, pink, or green glass. Pins that are from specific places or you can tell they are (ie the white house etc), old fashioned sewing notions (thimbles, pincushions, darning tools, buttons, etc.), unique musical instruments, old hardback books, kaleidoscopes, classical music LPs, and right now my biggest quest is to find tons of things I can use in my scrapbooking ie old magazines, lace or ribbion, buttons, old earings, old neclaces, broches, beads, material scraps, and so on. The scrapbooking has become VERY important to me because my grandmother is entrusting me with ALL the family photos which go two generations before her (and she will be 91 this year) to have for my scrapbooks!! I feel SO honored and am so very excited!!!!!

Kathy, I love your ideas and HUGZ!!! Please let us know when you are going to post a final list so I can print it up and be on the hunt!!! **am so excited!!

I have too much "stuff" as it is. So when I got married 2 yrs ago(2nd time) I deciede I needed to collect something. After much thinking I decieded on ceramic thimbles. I started on our honeymoon with on from Washington D.C. Now when DH and I travel I buy one from places we have been. Since I sew these are displayed in the sewing room. I recenctly found a printers tray and now I have a place to put them on my MIL 1918 singer electric machine.. I love it. So far only 5 thimbles. Guess we need to travel more!!! LOL

Oh my gosh! I forgot about my rocks! Thank you for reminding me! I have been trying to collect them from places I go, too, but keep forgetting. I do have a rounded pebble from a bay in Cape Cod, a one-inch almost-perfect square of red quartz from New Mexico, a glass doorknob from a fire on an old farm in Michigan, a Petoskey stone, a flat black round stone the size of a nickel from a Lake Michigan beach, and one from Puerto Rico. How could I have forgotten?

I had a childhood friend who had a rock or little babyfood jar of soil from everyplace she had ever been. It was fun to look at the different type rocks and different colors of soil. She didn't have a single one labeled..she just knew where they were from. I always thought that was a kind of neat thing to do.
Hey Elizabeth...I have saved tiny eggs from my hens over the last few years. I have a couple who lay tiny eggs like bird eggs now and then. (they are banties so smaller eggs in the first place) We dry them just like you said. I have a few in a little bird's nest that the boys found on a shelf and the rest in a small basket. I would love to send you a couple if you want them. They are lt. brown and real cute. Already dry. Email me if you are interested. I am sure I could pack them well enough since they are so small.

I collect, with the help of my children, tiny birds eggs & rocks. We have a small collection of birds eggs, we started collecting them 2 yrs ago, when we first moved to our farm. They are such tiny fagile things. The children usually find them in their wanderings around the farm. They bring them in, were they are washed with warm soapy water, and left to dry in the window. Then days later, when sure not to draw ants, they are placed in their home. Their home is currently in a old wooden pop crate hanging on the kitchen wall. The crate also is home to several odds and ends that we have picked up here & there.

Our rock collection started when the children where very young. We lived next to a RR Track. Many times after returning from a walk to the store with daddy, they would stop to get a rock to bring me. All the RR rocks are long gone, however, it started a tradition that has indured over the years. Some of our prized rocks are...one that was tumbled in the sea, it looks like swiss cheese, and when you shake it, you can here a sea shell (or another rock) stuck inside....a brick sized piece of soapstone, collected from my childhood home....a 1 1/2 ft long brick of granite, from my father, that reminds me of stonehendge....another long brick, this one marble brought back from Marblehill Georgia....several fist sized chunks of obsidian (sp?), this is the stone arrowheads where made from...and a fossile....among tons of others. I did have to leave one of my prized pieces, in California when we moved. It was a large, 3ft diameter, boulder of quartz, from my childhood home.

Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.

Citycat,
that is quite interesting that you collect bugs. my 15 yr. old daughter does too..she is doing a study this summer on the click beetle and my freezer has at least 2 cigar boxes with specimens in them all the time. She has been extremely interested in the world of entomology for about 2 years now..ever since we set up a tropical rainforest type cage and raised several types of butterflies and host plants and learned about the humidity requirements for rearing butterflies, etc. She has just recently been invited to take a private tour of the Entomology/Nematology department of FSU/Gainesville by a professor in the beetle area. She was quite tickled to say the least..so..no..collecting bugs isn't weird.

Here's a wierd item for collection (for a farmgirl, anyway!) Anything Chihuahua!!!
We have an alpha male Chi who weighs in at a whopping 9 lbs. and believe me, he runs the whole household! He knows he has a lot of territory to protect, and he does it well, rarely taking a day off. He has no idea he is the perfect snack-size for hungry hawks and large dogs. He is learning quickly about being a farmdog and loves being outside. I am partial to just about anything referencing this cute little breed.

I love animals without backbones, especially insects. I collect actual insects (pinned and labelled) and other insect items. My friends got together one year and got me all of the "A Bug's Life" McDonald toys except for Dimm. I'm missing him from my collection. I collect all insect things, but I like to have them as closely resembling real insects as possible (ie. 6 legs, the right number of wings, etc). Some of my favourite things over the years: an actual size glass banana slug, a jellyfish fingerpuppet, a stuffed toy of African Sleeping Sickness, and an embossed etching called "bar flies". Do you know how hard it is to find art/collectables with flies on them? I LOVE flowerflies, and I'm always looking for insect things with flies on them, but I never have much luck! And absolutely NO butterflies. Why too overdone.

I guess the other thing I collect are books. I can't bear to part with them! Even ones I don't like! I'm moving to Toronto at the end of June, and the whole process of trying to weed my book collection is daunting! I have a severe weakness for kids books, poetry books and Canadian literature. From my last move, I still have 3 boxes of books I couldn't unpack because I didn't have the bookshelf space! I also have WAY too many CD's... -Cat

have a lovely day

I have a small collection of vintage hats and purses...also a small collection of teacups and saucers given to me by my mother in law..they are the kind with the irridescent type sheen on them(lusterware? ..I dunno..but they sure are pretty) and of course I certainly enjoy things like old photographs (being that I am a photographer) and vintage items.

What a great topic! I too collect a little bit of everything...
Ironstone, 1940's cannisters, clocks, and doll teasets (my plan is to give my daughter one on each of her birthdays).
Just yesterday I decided to start a vintage apron collection - I bought my first one for $5. It is so cute. I've found the full aprons are harder to find??

My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I'm just crazy about pickle dishes. Clear cut or pressed pickle dishes. Please don't send any to me, I have shelves of them. Here is the crazy part, I'm not that fond of pickles! LOL. I think I just love them because my farm granny always had one on the table during meal times. I always get them out for holidays and special dinners. My family loves pickles. My daughters are already claiming their favorites. I too love vintage buttons, aprons and fabric. I sew, alot and make aprons and costumes (just finishe 24 for the third grade play: Of Mice and Mozart. They were fun to make and I made them to fit my girl, so they can wear them to Colonial Williamsburg! Oh and I collect sewing patterns vintage and new, adults and children...main requirement: they must be value priced (aka: cheap) The Goodwill is a great place to pick up vintage patterns! Sewing is one of those dying arts and the patterns are in great supply! (well here at least) Gotta get some sleep soon. Just finished watching the finale of 24.

Oh I love this thread! What a good idea Kathy! I think I start a new collection every week!! But I mainly collect vintage or vintage looking buttons (I make button bracelets and sell them at the local dairy), i also just started my new favorite collection of scientific or botanical prints, but those are fairly hard to find. But what i LOVE most of all are old hankies! Especially the really colorful ones with flowers or fun designs! Im gonna start my farmgirl collection list right now!!

Like everyone else in the universe...oh dear...I collect enamelware/tinware - but not for display. I look for pieces I can actually use every day. Since we want to go off-grid, I feel enamelware is the best choice. I'm still trying to find a good tin measuring cup that's marked.

But I'm always at the thrift stores and I find all kinds of things I don't collect but I know others do. This is a great idea.

Georgette- How sweet you are to want to share some of your treasured buttons!!
I was just sitting here thinking about what I could do for you and egg cosies popped into my head!! I have been knitting them like mad lately. If you don't know what they are, an egg cosy is like a little hat you put on your soft (or hard) boiled egg in an egg cup to keep it hot. Mine are made of wool or cotton, and can be striped or solid, pointy or round, shaped like a strawberry ( sent some to MaryJane in the traveling apron!).Soooo, I was thinking I could trade you a set of egg cosies (4) in your choice of colors for the buttons. How does that sound? You can e-mail me through the forum and let me know your address, etc. and I will do the same if you would like.

Karin, I have a round large tin of my grandmothers buttons.....I would love to share some with you (as everyone here has become very dear to me.....I love you all) and I actually saw some flower frogs at this big "junk" place. You can not believe this place, all kinds of stuff, lots of "junk" but some good stuff thrown in and I did see some frogs. I know they wouldn't be too expensive..........how do we do this, if I was to pick a couple of them up?

I started "collecting" little girls.... OK so I made them, but then just couldn't give them up. Well I started calling them my ladybugs, so I didnt call ALL of the neighbor kids when I called them in for dinner! A good friend started giving me little ladybugs things so I might stop making them myself... And so my collection of ladybugs began, and even my MIL sends my Ladybugs stuff like sticker and last Valentines day, a watch! Ialso love old books of classic lit, but I am so starved for space that it is loosing the charm! I cant see and enjoy them packed in storage! But ladybugs, now they are fun!

Kathy- What a great idea you have here! I am a flower frog collector. Wierd, I know, but I just love them. I am also a button collector. Whenever I travel, I try to find old buttons. They are unique, beautiful and SMALL, so no worrying about taking up space!!
I am making a list to take with me when I go out on "Yard Sale Friday." You never know what you will find.
