I just read this thread and join everyone else in starting off 2014 with the push for getting healthier! As I age, I can see how healthy eating and some sort of exercise is going to make my life easier and help me have more energy. About 14 year ago, I had some nutritional counseling following a surgery and the dietitian helped me understand about how to set up a healthier diet. It is all about choices and making healthy choices available so you can make better choices when you just have to have something sweet or yummy. Emotional eating is a common problem for people and women seem to outwardly struggle the most with this. Instead of alcohol or drugs, we turn to sugary treats to cheer ourselves up. But the pounds quickly pile up and get harder and harder to lose as we age and our metabolisms change and slow down. To start, keep a food diary for 2 weeks and write everything down that you put in your mouth. You will find that you also do mindless snacking . Calories add up quickly just while preparing dinner! So, once you can see where your trouble spots are in the day, you can make a plan for healthier choices to have on hand. Depending on what you like, you can find all sorts of ideas on the internet. Couple better and healthier choices with portion control and you will see the pounds slowly come off. If you can find ways to eat small healthy snacks at key times in the day, you will be able to avoid those hot donuts in the morning, cookies in the afternoon and pints of ice cream at night. If your hunger stays satisfied, then you will lose your cravings for the foods that are so delicious but nothing but empty calories. You also must think about how to get moving each day. Just start with a 10 or 15 minute walk in the neighborhood or up and down your long rural driveway a few times. Nothing fancy, just get your body moving. When you make better food choices and get moving, you will see a difference and begin to feel better. Feeling better and seeing the pounds slowing melt is a huge motivator to keep doing the same strategy. We can all do these things. They don't cost money. It is about choices and we can all choose to do things a little different. It is a good example for our families, children, and friends too. Good luck with your 2014 strategy! Mine is slowly working for me and keeping me "in the straight and narrow"!!

Okay, I am fat (my word) and I need to lose weight. It is very cold here right now and getting out to walk is difficult. My plan is to get out in the garden for an hour a day this spring and summer. I find exercising difficult unless I am also accomplishing a task. Another problem I have is my achey knees. This has hampered my mobility somewhat but I still am determined to keep them moving. I will see my doctor about them. Once that is soothed, I can look at more strenuous activity.

Having a plan is the first step, I think.

Honey, you don't need a kick, you need some hugs, this is tough thing to get through, but you will. Save the energy you have to love your family and yourself. The way you look is not a reflection of the real you. the weight will come off, the energy will return. All will be right again. You sound like you have a wonderful family and husband that are there for you. LOVE them and ALLOW them to love you. Take care, and as hard as I can hug you, it's on it's way.

Life here has gotten really hectic and honestly, I'm fighting some depression. I have a mass on my adrenal gland and some cysts/masses on my parathyroid glands. I'm a momma of 6 and for the first time, I don't even have the energy to ENJOY schooling and raising them. I know a large part of that is my adrenal gland, but it is disheartening at best. My potassium is really low and my sodium high, causing a lot of fluid build-up and increased blood pressure. Due to nursing my youngest (5 mo dd), I cannot take a diuretic. I meet with the surgeon the 13th to "pick a date" to have the adrenal gland with the mass removed. My weight, which was down to my pre pregnancy weight at only 6 weeks postpartum before my adrenal gland struck, has steadily climbed. And then I turn to food - I have a severe sweet tooth and turn to chocolate and ice cream for comfort. I can eat a pint of Ben and Jerrys by myself. Sadly, my hubby joins me, but he has a high metabolism and has no weight issues what-so-ever. I want to lose weight - I need to lose weight - but I'm not sure how to pull myself out of the "dump" that I am in emotionally, to tackle the weight issue. It is so much easier to cry and eat ice cream. We went Christmas shopping today for clothing, and I just feel sick with how I look..... and even more so, as I sit here and type this, I HATE how I feel! Lazy, no energy, just blah. Not sure what I am going to do to turn this around. We are "real food" people for the most part. I cook from scratch and love trying other cuisines. But I have a sweet tooth as I said. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated - as would a swift kick in the pants ;)

I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance, a kind of pre type 2 diabetes. I have gained over 30 pounds in 3 years time after a lifetime of being a size 4-6. It is frustrating to say the least, especially since exercising and dramatically reducing my carbs (per my doctor's advice) hasn't really made a huge difference. I just started taking Metformin, which should help the insulin resistance. Not to steer anyone away from Mary Jane's farm, but I've found support on Sparkpeople.com. You can use the site to keep track of your fitness and calories, but they also have great recipes and a friendly and supportive forum. The site is free and it may be of particular interest to those of you that live in rural settings with nary a gym or Weight Watcher's meeting in sight.

I think weight watchers is the way to go for the pregnancy. You can do it on line.. but it you can get to a meeting you are more likely to stick to it. It's just a good old common sense meal plan. You have options. All I can say is stay way from your trigger foods. I cannot have peanut butter in the house or I will eat a jar with a spoon ! Marshmellow creme is the same.

Diet soft drinks are the kiss of death. STOP. They will trigger an insulin reaction and you will be craving carbs. I proved to to myself 3 times (think I'd learn the first time). Water is the way to go. (re: aspertame... my granddaughter did an experiment with ants. the ones that had aspertame and sugar turned aggressive and all but three in the colony died. The ones fed just sugar all lived (but three) and were not agressive. Just saying - if it kills ants how good can it really be for our species??)

Good luck. I was on weight watchers with my last baby and it was a breeze.

yay Kristina!!!!!! Do you weigh in again tomorrow? I need to get on the ball! I've actually gained 10-13 pounds in the last two weeks - but it is primarily fluid. For some reason, I'm swelling AFTER my pregnancy instead of during (my daughter is 8 weeks today - YIKES!). As son as I get the "okay" to start losing the weight, I will be on it! What is your method? Exercising and watching what you eat or a specific "diet"? I've seen a lot about "Trim Healthy Mom" right now, but I'm not sure I want to try something that I cannot or will not do for life.

I am still working at my goal, and have lost 19.6 pounds now. My youngest has lost about 30. Her and I teamed up to push each other to walk every day.

I just read through all these posts and am really hoping that some of you fabulous women, if not all of you, are still either working towards your goals or are maintaining them! I have about 60 pounds I would like to lose. I am 3 weeks postpartum, so exercising is pretty much out of the question right now. I debated using that as my excuse to wait to start my journey to a healthier me... then my four year old dd looked at me and told me I look like I still have a baby in my belly.... Need I say more? I think instead I am going to take advantage of not being able to exercise yet and focus on my eating. We eat A LOT of veggies and fruits, especially during the summer (we belong to a local CSA year round, not to mention our garden). We also stick with grass fed beef, pasture raised chickens, venison, buffalo, and wild caught fish as our protein. BUT I am a chocoholic and love soda as well! Honestly I think I love all sweets! So I'm going to take advantage of not being able to exercise and do one thing at a time rather than jumping in and getting in over my head.... I need to cut back on the sweets, watch my portion sizes, and stay away from sodas! I also want to focus on getting more water in.... they say you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water... so if you weigh 200 pounds, you should drink 100 oz of water a day! That is over 12 cups of water!!!

July 1st I started my "diet" of no more sweets! And so far so good. I am 230 pounds. And disgusted with myself. My mom and I are going out to Colorado the middle of August and I hope to have lost a lot of pounds by then.

I haven't even read a single post, but saw the title. So I hope everyone is doing well on your journeys so far! And keep up all the hard work!

I recently joined Curves and am doing their Curves Complete program. It consists of working out 4 times per week, a diet and meal plan totally designed by them (it's available online and SO COOL), vitamin supplements, and weekly meetings with a coach. I'm enjoying it so far. I walk a lot at my job but have battled with being overweight my whole life. I've decided that these next six months are MY time to make a difference in my health and body. I just can't give in to my food urges and pig out!

I started eating healthier a couple of months ago. I have incorporated more fruit and veggies everyday. I love junk food so it has been difficult but getting better. I am down 6 pounds. I have been walking 4 times a week and taking a yoga class, which I love. I think I am ready to stick to it. I have saved some skinny clothes from years ago that I hope I can get back into. :)

I'm still doing this, but hand to start over basically. I am down 10.4 lbs. now, and one of my daughters has also joined me in exercise/weight loss and simply staying healthy (she refused french fries the other day when Hubby drove through the drive thru). I'm so proud of her for good choices.

Way to go Stephanie, good luck to you, and to everyone. I've dropped 25 pounds and I must say it wasn't that hard. I don't know how I've managed to come up with the will-power but so far so good. Whenever I'm tempted to overeat or eat the wrong things I remind myself if I stick with it I can get off blood pressure meds and my CPAP for sleep apnea. It will be better on my joints, better for my skin, better for SO many reasons. Not just appearance but that's an awesome thing too. Lower cholesterol and blood sugar and more energy. Really enjoying strawberries and watermelon right now and grilling out has been such a nice change now the weather's nicer.

Well my weight loss and exercise journey got jump started by a diagnosis of lupus recently. I HAVE to take better care of myself now, I don't have a choice. I cut out all sugar, starchy foods, no fried food, no fast food and lots of fresh veggies/fruits, drinking lots of water, occasional unsweet tea. I finally broke the diet soda habit, I had one the other day and it tasted awful, can't believe I drank so much of that stuff! It's been over a month now and have dropped 20pounds but much more to go, hope I can hang in there and keep it up. My biggest challenge is moving and exercising, hard to do when you're fatigued and in pain. I don't want to give up and inspirational you-tube videos are very helpful.

I seem to have hit a plateau. I need something to jump start the weight loss again. Have been doing ok I do need to get more walking in. I upped my water intake which has helped a bit.
Working outside as much as I can while the weather is nice and the warmth bearable.

I'm getting on the treadmill right after this last batch of zucchini muffins are done. I spent the morning in the flower beds and garden, then came in to do all the dishes, and laundry (which add up my steps fast), then it's back to work, and so forth.

It's noon and I logged about 4,300 steps so far. I still need to lift weights today.

Last night I made a tortilla burrito that is filled with chunks of organic chicken, baked black beans and onions (from dry), then a layer of home canned salsa mixed with organic avocado. Mmmm! Fruit was pineapple.

Today, I need to up my water, fruit and veggies. So I made up a big salad for the week, adding fresh green onions from the garden. Then, I have extra fruits like bananas, apples, and such.

Late night munching is my downfall.
