Ok, farmgals, since alot of us have weighed in on the bra issue, I wondered what kinds of conversations we can have about shaving....
How do you feel about women shaving or not shaving at all?

For a long long time I didn't shave at all.
Now I shave under my arms, a couple times a week.
Sometimes I shave my legs.

I guess with younger people these days, some shave everywhere...I mean everywhere.
How do you feel about that?

It really bothers my mother when I don't shave...she worries that it is unsantitary??What??
I said I don't shave, not that I don't shower!

Let's get a good conversation going.....
Why do you shave?
Why don't you shave?

Love and light to you all

I shave every 3 days or so. I spent 3 weeks in TX, practically in a pool or living in tank top and skirts, so I shave every other day. i have dark hair too, so it is noticeable if I don't.

As far as plastic surgery, I think people are way too obsessed. I am only 32 and know women younger than me "fight age" with surgery. WHAT!!! I am on a mission this year to live one year with my white- yes white- hair (about 30% of my head is white- it runs in the family) and no makeup except lip gloss, mascara and some pressed powder. I have had sooo many negative comments about my hair- mostly from women too uncomfortable with their own aging they have to comment. Aging is natural and I don't want to look like a everyone else through surgery. Did you notice how all these people look alike??

I think surgery is appropriate when necessary- horrible disfigurement, burns, acne, medical reason, etc.

This wide eyed, look like you never blink, permanent smile look is scary to me!!!

I haven't shaved my legs in nine months since a little after I got pregnant. My hair is light though. But it is thick. Some people have commented on it, others not. I will continue to shave bikini area and underarms though for hygeine and societal reasons.

About the aging thing. Back in my college days, there was a gal who was a theather major. One night just for kicks, she made us up to look old. I looked just like my mom's mom. Not that that's a bad thing. Oh well. I'm a darker blond, so the grey might not be an issue, although I did pluck one this year....and on my 36th BD no less!

What I absoutly can't stand are the "old lady" whiskers that sometimes crop up below or to the side of my chin. These are big, heavy, and black. So they definitely get the 'ole pluckeroo

I shave seasonally! That is, In the summer I do the legs and arms if it shows or if it's annoying me with the heat. In the winter it's colder I sweat less and shave less. Usually by spring I need a bushhog for the legs :) As I age and the hormones decrease I see less hair so even in summer I don't have to do it every day.Yea!!
Now on aging. I'm just gonna go with however God deals it out for me. In a way it'll be interesting to see how much I look like which family member. Also I have worked a plastic surgery floor. I know exactly HOW they do the surgeries and how these people look and feel after surgery. I would never chose this voluntarily. Now if there was and injury that needed corrected or it was to be done for health reasons then I'm all for it. That's for myself. Anyone brave enough to chose surgery certainly has my support .

I took off shaving for a few years during my "Northern California Influence" time...I spent some time in Santa Cruz and for a So Cal girl I needed the extra hair to keep you warm, even at the beach! I did, oddly enough, bleach the hair on my legs during that time. Now? Well, I do keep the legs and pits pretty clean shaven during the summer. Winter and long pants is another story.
As for hair, mine is quickly going grey. Won't die it. I don't think I'd do any plastic surgery either, unless it was to improve my health.

Good reading, again!

Shaving: Arm pits and Legs....in US a cultural thing...men like clean. Europe, they don't shave. We had a Austrian exchange student my senior year, she was drop dead gorgeous natural blond, didn't shave. The guys were falling over her. By the second week at school she had been swimming with another student and everyone knew she didn't shave. The guys suddenly stopped fawning over her. I shave arm pits and lower legs. My thighs have always stayed light except a few stray hairs, so they are plucked. If I go swimming in my next door neighbors pool I shave further up.

Plastic Surgery: Not for me....don't like pain. I've had three eye surgeries for my muscles when I was younger. I may need to have plastic surgery as I get older to see. Just have to wait on that verdict. Eye makeup as I've gotten older drives my eyes nuts, so I only where it when I absolutely have too.

Hair color: I like my grey. But...don't you just love that word. I highlight my hair....my DH loves it. It also makes me look younger since I can't wear eye makeup and foundation tears my skin up.

My mom was in the height of her feminist years when I was an adolescent so the fact that she wasn't shaving made the impression on me that it certainly was "necessary". Of course, eventually I started shaving but could never care enough to keep up with it on a regular basis. I remember being shocked when one of my friends in college said she shaved every day! One year I even made it my New Year's resolution to keep up with it but we all know how successful those New Year's promises can be. So now I get to it when I get to it and thank God everyday that DH isn't too picky!

o.k. ... my take on shaving armpits and legs for a woman .. is a FOUR LETTER WORD:

SEXY

i adore the way my shaven body feels all smooth and silky when shave .. not to mention all the other 'senses'!!

which is interesting ... because i LOVE a HAIRY man .. and find that very SEXY!

as to a woman shaving her other body parts .. be they NORTH or SOUTH of the bellybutton .. well .. that is pretty much a 'fad' that comes and goes .. and if a woman wants to experiment .. i say 'go for it' .. just as i do with any other thing that makes us feel 'good'. i don't worry about these little things when it comes to a woman experimenting with "nekked tu-tu's" .. or even their HEAD if they are so inclined!

no more so than i would with them trying different shades of lipstick. we have pretty much all of us tried 'fads' that our own parents found silly or outrageous .. but it most likely didn't make us any less a good person .. and we might have some fun memories of those times (oh yeah!!! the sixties and seventies!!!!) wouldn't trade 'em or my experiences for anything in the world!

oh my .. and i would sure give mother nature a little 'lift' or 'tuck' here and there if i could ... my doc says 'no elective surgery' for me 'cuz of the healing aspect of diabetics ... but if i could .. i sure would! and i don't think it truly has anything to do with what 'society' says .. but more of just looking in the mirror and loving the outside as well as the inside of that woman who is looking back at me. i truly don't believe there is a RIGHT or WRONG of anything a woman wants to do to her body when it comes to enhancing it or tweaking it (as long as it is not HARMFUL to her body!) i have women-friends full of lines and grey hair that i adore and i have women-friends who love PLAYING with beauty products and the look they get with them .. they are ALL equally beautiful in my sight .. and whatever makes them personally happy .. is what is important, i believe.

i have never had any surgery .. i surely do love to play with my hair color .. from black to brown to blonde to red .. to the golds, greens (yes! greens!!), russets, reds, oranges of autumn ... to the red, white and blue (yes! blue!!) of independence day .. it is just FUN!!! .. i ADORE make-up and love my RAZOR and powders and perfumes.

i CAN actually appear before my friends with just a smile on my face with yesterday's mascara rubbed down the side of my cheek .. or with a spanking scrubbed from the shower face ... and be happy too .. but PREFER to girly-girl me up when going out and when gathering.

well gurlfrenz .. that's the 'gospel according to frannie' xoxoxo

I shave everyday & have been since 6th grade also. Its just part of my shower routine. Plastic surgery is not an option for me. I know people say all time they earned their wrinkles, well I have!!

Pits I shave every day, legs when I remember to. Or when I look down at my legs and think "God, are my legs ever hairy"...

I shave my legs and have done the laser thing in the bikini area (not sure way there is no such swim wear in my future) and arm pit area. Laser was great and the pain was there but sure beat waxing and sugaring. I will get a boob reduction (my 50th B-day gift to myself)hopefully my insurance will help pay for it. At 5'3" and 130lbs my 32DDD's are a bit much as no one makes a DDD in 32 so I have to wear 34 or 36DD which are to big around and the underwires reach almost wire to wire. Very uncomfortable and the divid in the shoulders from straps are painful too. I can not imagine what a nice B or even a C would be like. For the comfort of smaller boobs I endure the pain.

Pray for our troops to come home safe and soon.

For me it's weather or not I just want to fool w/ it. A lot of times in the winter I'll let myself go. But I'm a swimmer/cyclist, so for "aerodynamic reasons" I'll shave. Winter time I'll get more lax.

Funny how our culture makes this such an issue. An X husband made me feel so self conscious and bad when I did let myself go. He made issue of it in public too. I didn't think it was all that bad, but HE was more concerned about himself! Had I been stronger then, it might have gone a different direction.

I have a few friends who go this route and as long as folks shower and maintain good hygene, it shouldn't be a problem.

Again, during the "back to the land phase" I went natural in the body hair department too. Stopped shaving altogether. I'm not a very furry person so it wasn't a huge deal. I did notice that after the initial stubble grows out, the hair is very soft & silky. Not a bad thing really. I went back to shaving because it it very socially unacceptable not to shave if you are a woman in this country. Hairy legs & HEAVEN FORBID armpits, will sure get you some strange looks! (Didn't we just have this conversation in the breastfeeding topic?) Women who don't shave are typically thought of as organic gardening hippies or Tie Dye wearing Grateful Dead fans. ;) Again, not a bad thing really.

I shave pits and legs... After switching to an aluminum free deodorant; Tom's of Maine, I have to work hard at not stinking. Less hair just is easier. The legs are simply for my DH, as like Aunt Jenny, I don't wear shorts or go swimming, and my skirts are ankle length.

A friend whose eyes are really deepset was struggling with her vision, finally had the lift done, and could see again, which makes a lot of sense to me. As for my own face-lift thoughts, I look at picts of my grandmother at my wedding with pursed lips... and doggone if I'm not getting them, too! I absolutely hate it, but it does make me wonder what kind of expression I wear on my face. Give me laugh lines any day! I have no plans to get them "fixed", however. I do plan to smile more.

I always shave my legs but...A few years ago my friend started a laser hair removel business and needed victims to practice on. So, my daughter and I now no longer have hair on our upper lips or under our arms. Was it worth it? Well, now that time has passed, yes. But the pain was awful!! Zap, pain, zap, pain!! Yikes it was like being tortured with a million bees!!

I have to shave every day. Legs and armpits. I probably would leave my armpits without shaving but not my legs. I always thought there was something wrong with me because I have stubble by the next morning after shaving, but about five years ago I found out I have PCOS, which increases male hormones and therefore more hair (yippeee). It usually hurts to shave the hair on my thighs because it is so coarse, but there's not a lot I could do without looking like Husband Dear! :) I can't use Nair- doesn't do a dang thing!

He told me several years ago that I've always had hair, and it doesn't bother him, which is some small comfort, but I still hate to have so much of it!

I personally like how it feels to be shaved. I love the silkiness. I feel prickly when I don't shave under my arms and I really think it hurts to not shave my legs. I love the softness, Rob does too.

I wish I could not shave, it just takes too long, but I love how it feels.

I am thinking on all of this, I wonder what it is about our society that makes us feel there is something wrong with ageing?
In other cultures, as people age they are beheld has the matriarch of the family....
We just want to be/look young again.
What is so bad about grey hair? Or wrinkles? Or drooping boobs? (my least favorite physical trait) But when I look outside the box, my body has brought forth life, and I have nourished four children..that's why my breasts droop. It is a God-given gift to beget life...why do I hate what it did to my body????Hmmmm...I have some soul searching to do on this one.

Let's have some mind fodder...

plastic surgery..nope..not for me. Havn't colored my hair except for a couple times the rinse out kind just to try it..just wasn't for me. I am lucky enough to have mostly dark brown hair still at 47 so I figure I am fine with slowly greying. My eyes are not as pretty as they used to be and I have smile lines like crazy but I am okay with it. Now a boob reduction..if I could afford it THAT would be tempting..but no. I wouldn't. Too chicken I suppose. I am fine with my aging I guess. Good question to ponder. I know some people who would jump at the chance for trying to look younger.

I have shaved since I was in 6th grade -- both pits and legs. I will continue to shave until I can't do it anymore. I also notice that my leg hair doesn't grow as much as it used to. I can get away with about once a week there.

As far as plastic surgery goes -- the eye lift is something that insurance will pay for if it is interferring with your vision. I have a friend who works for a plastic surgeon. If I had the bucks I would have my eyes done and my "jowls" done. I'd also have my boobs reduced and a tummy tuck. But not because I want a perfect body. I'd just like the things that are going south to go north again! But since I don't have that much money I'll just have to remain a "southern" girl!

There is so much pressure on young girls (and anyone) to be perfect. They see people like Paris Hilton or other movie stars and want to be like that. Our society pushes perfect down their throats -- you'll be cool if you're perfect -- NOT. I do everything I can to keep my 12 year old away from the magazines and TV shows. And we talk a lot about self image. But it still filters in.

I choose faith not fear.

I shave both my legs & underarms -- always have and plan to until I can't or don't need to. I feel better, more feminine (smooth, silky), etc.

As for cosmetic surgery. Hmmmm . . . I would IF I had way more $$ than I need, wasn't the type to avoid needles/doctors/hospitals/clinics/procedures unless absolutely necessary, and if the recovery was either painless or controllable without being all drugged-out. Looks like that won't ever be happening! If I did, though, I'd have the bags under my eyes removed -- I've had them all my life and detest them.

I will weigh in here. For years, I thought plastic surgery was nuts. I felt that as my hair started "fading" (read: greying) and my face started aging (wrinkling) that the fading matched the aging, and complimented each other. I mean, sometimes you see someone who has had a facelift with a really bright hair color (usually blond) and it just doesn't look right. I have never colored my grey. I still have enough blond that I figure I'll be okay into my sixties and then it will be perfectly fine to be all grey, if I go that way.
However. I have re-thought the plastic surgery. And specifically the eyes. I have never had "wide-open big" eyes - and as I have aged, the eyes are getting more and more "hooded" and closed - to where I think I look unhappy a lot of the time. I met a woman a few years ago who said it this way...if I have done a lot of work on my (inner) self to be happy, but my outer self looks unhappy, then that is a disconnect, and if I can look happy with a little surgery, then so be it! She doesn't want to present an unhappy face to the world. So I am definitely considering blepheroplasty (an eyelid lift, so to speak) so that my eyes don't get to the point where they are practically closed all the time. So while I don't advocate plastic surgery to look younger, I am all for the idea of trying to make my outside visage look like my inner self...
I know that if I tried to work up serious SMILE lines, that this might not be necessary, but I also look at pics of my mother who had the same issue, and I'd really like to see more of my EYE than my eyelid and I think I would see better also...
Anyhow, that's my two cents, and I would me more than happy to hear anyone's thoughts on the matter, as well as personal experience or that of someone you know....Thanks! Judy
